I understand why people are disappointed about Lalor, Smilie, Hotton (etc) not getting no 4, 8, 9, 10 (etc) but I think it’s good that these young lads don’t have to have the pressure of wearing such an important number. I just want these young lads to be themselves and not have to worry about being a new Dusty. (Also remember back in 2010 when Dusty was drafted, he wore number 36 his first year of footy, and then they gave him No 4, for the rest of his career so don’t be disappointed about it now, they could easily get those numbers in future)
Agree, would love to see em go out there and prove themselves for a year first before getting a top 10 number. Lalor #4, Smillie #6 and Armstong #8 would be awesome to see in the future. Especially since they're all from the same draft
We gotta also remember go some of the older draftees like Sonsie, Clarke, Banks, Brown, McAuliffe, Campbell, Green, Smith, Tresize, Bauer, Young, Fawcett and Dow, as well as Blight and Gray, that have some high numbers and haven't been given a low number yet. Would it be fair to give the new draftees the higher numbers ahead of them, straight away before proving themselves, not just in ability but club culture? I think we'll see more movement next year for numbers, allow a bit of competition between these guys to earn who gets these numbers.
Yes it would be fair because players like Thompson Dow are trash and have done nothing to deserve a high number. Lalor was literally pick 1 and worked his ass off to be that. That’s enough to get a good number
Your a bit young too remember Barry Rollings 22 what a great player late 70's an 80's who i think he was the vice captain of the tigers premiership team in 1980. So I'm happy seeing Lalor having his number.
I’m sorry but why does this matter? I’m sure the new players really don’t care all that much at all and Rioli got the perfect number for him. Just seems an odd thing to be negative about.
Trust me they would care much more than you think atleast a couple of em! It’s because it’s an honour to wear a great number or a legends number and none of them got the honour except Alger
100% man, I’ve been debating with old tiger heads on x who were saying the boys need to earn it.. Lalor and Smillie deserved to have single digit numbers. No-one is ever going to be as good as Dusty and they think they’re protecting L4LOR from the media, regardless if its this year or next he’s always going to be compared to Dusty so may as well let him have his favourite number and make it his own! People who say its just a number it doesn’t mean anything obviously have never played the game, I know I alway played and felt better in my favourite number it was like having extra powers
Melbourne gave Jack Watts Norm Smith's old jumper and it was presented by Ron Barassi - they put all the pressure on a 17 year old kid to carry the hopes and dreams of their embarrassing club and they and he crumbled. I like letting the kids had a bit less pressure than trying to live up to whichever famous name wore the jumper in the past
Dustin Martin began his career in the number 36. Which of our new recruits are so much superior to Dustin that they should walk onto an AFL oval for the first time wearing 4, 8, 9 or any other low number. I was more disappointed to see them give Smillie number 16. All low numbers need to be earned and just because a player is drafted in the first round doesn't make him a star player. Let's wait a year or two and see who shines.
They recruited that many players when they said they are getting new numbers I thought 51 to 60 Now that the comedic formalities are out of the way it gives the new players some competition to fight for low numbers if they can make a competition thing out of it. Maybe even bragging rights Plus you don't want to be giving them all the single digit numbers with no work put in - a team is also about culture - others have been earning it for years so don't want two make to sets of rules - which was highlighted by multiple exiting players this year.
Far far too much negativity about such a positive time for the club. Once players are drafted, they’re all equal. Let them earn a low number, even supposing they want one. I don’t know what echo chamber you live in, but my group of Tigers are far from disappointed at the jersey numbers. This is whingeing for clicks.
Imo Richmond missed a chance to give a lot of fans some incredible excitement by giving our draftees good numbers. But like you said, if they’re good, they upgrade next year. Disagree with Ben Miller. A fully fit list does not have Ben Miller in the 22. He’s not better than Broad, Balta and Gibcus…
Agree with everything you said, I don't like the idea of making a player "earn" a low number. They've earnt the right by being the best junior footballers they could be and being drafted. Lalor should be 4, Hotton 6, Faull 8, Smillie 9, Armstrong 10, Trainor 11 and Sims 16. Don't mind Alger wearing 29
Sorry, we have had number one draft picks who turned out to be duds. Proving one's self in the AFL is harder than junior ranks. Let's wait and see which players shine.

Couldn't agree more

@ I suppose you’re right, just seems a trivial thing to myself.

100% this is a very good take

Interesting way of looking at it but I don’t think that’s the reason he failed
I think you could look at most numbers and find that they have had famous players play in them, so it really doesn’t matter that much now does it.
Remember Cotchin Edwards Martin didn’t get their numbers that they retired with didn’t start with
What number did Cotch start with? Pretty sure he got 9 straight up
@ oops I was wrong I thought he started with 17 Jack Dyer number they were thinking of giving him17 I thought he he started with 17
@ but it wasn’t anyone’s number before Cotchin wore it
@@johnfloris6306 Wayne Campbell wore 9
@ yes he did but not before Cotchin wore it was at least 5yrs

Should keep the numbers Sacred for the best players for Marketing and Monetary purposes IMO

Yeah I'm thinking the same as you an go tigers 🖤💛🖤
When I saw Lalor didn’t get 4 I really just laughed… I don’t think dusty would have mind at all
you're funny
This is facts

Yeah see this is what I’m saying something to look at and get us extra hyped

Yeah feel like it’s disrespectful to give a guy who worked his ass off to be number 1 and give him number 22
