The Sagamihara Line was an improved branch line built to transport gravel collected from the banks of the Sagami River, and was extended to serve the residents of Tama New Town, a large residential area built in the hills of western Tokyo. It was extended to Hashimoto Station in 1990. The original plan was to extend the line further west from Hashimoto Station, but this plan was cancelled.
As an access route to Tama New Town, Odakyu Electric Railway has also extended its branch line, and the lines of both companies run parallel near Tama Center Station and Nagayama Station, and then split into two directions, each heading towards Shinjuku. Between Keio and Odakyu, Keio has more passengers, and this is because Keio Line trains run directly to Shinjuku, while Odakyu trains have to change trains once en route to Shinjuku. was. As a countermeasure to this problem, Odakyu has increased the number of trains that connect directly to Shinjuku, but it has not yet recovered from its inferiority.
The eastern part of Tokyo, where the city center is located, is flat, but the western part, which extends to neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture, is hilly. For this reason, the Keio Sagamihara Line also runs through a hilly area, and the track has ups and downs.
The Keio Line uses ATC, so there are no traffic lights on the ground, and there are no level crossings on the Sagamihara Line. The Keio Line uses 1372mm gauge.
