Two-Man Chainsaw - Bar & Chain [Restoration]
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 бер 2019
- The time has come for this chainsaw restoration. This specific saw restoration is for me and I have been wanting to get to this tool for a long time. I started the disassembly in November 2018 and had to wait a while for some rare parts to arrive. This chainsaw is a McCulloch 99 two-man chainsaw made in 1954. The engine is 161cc and the powerhead alone is 51lbs making it one of the largest production chainsaws ever.
In this video I focus on the bar, chain, and gearbox. Everything had rust and dirt removed and painted parts got 3 coats of yellow enamel and 2 coats of a 2K clear paint for gas and oil resistance. McCulloch chainsaws had very inconsistent yellow colours, so I tried to match the colour of this specific saw the best I could. The gear box was in fantastic condition and did not need much work at all whereas the bar and magnesium castings needed much more love. I sharpened the chain back to an aggressive 35 degree angle because I am sure the saw can handle it.
I was surprised to notice that this model saw does not have a screw adjustment for tensioning the chain. I am not sure if this will cause issues when cutting and I will die.
In the next video I will work on the completely destroyed muffler and the unique and complicated carburetor.
In the final video I will work on the powerhead and hopefully cut some wood!
I'd like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video.

I love the intro! This is why I watch UA-cam instead of TV
heck yea, this, some music and you're set until the next episode.
LOL Clearcoat! I am pretty sure coffee is not supposed to come out of my nose like that......Well played sir.
If you're snorting coffee, it is supposed to go IN, not out! Not that I ever snort coffee... Why are you looking at me like that? I can quit any time I want!
I'm so annoyed I laughed at that joke too
You should know better then to watch a Hand Tool Rescue video while drinking lol
Lmao
yeah, that got me too. I LOL'd
This Chinaberry tree had two trunks. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 The wood is soft and rotten and the trees are hazardous when they tower over your house. The first trunk was actually healthy and about 16 inches diameter. I had to push a little when making the face cut at an angle because the wood was still healthy and strong. This thing barely slowed down and just chewed right through fast. The trunk did not fall in the direction I wanted but it missed the power lines so I guess I did OK. The second tunk was pretty rotted. It was exactly the diameter of the blade, 18 inches. The first pass made a perfect face cut on the first try. I was getting good at cutting with this saw. Unfortunately, there was so much rot that an inch or two into the back cut it just snapped. I am glad it held together long enough for that good face cut. I know I did not want to hang out under it. One strong breeze and I was a pancake. My karma must be good. The small trunk snapped a two-ton rope so I guess there were six tons of wood felled. I still need to de-limb the tree and pile up a bonfire. I look forward to it. This saw works great. It is fun to use. It cuts well.
Big thanks to Reed who sent me the rain coat just for the purpose of the joke at 11:02. Your return gift is on it's way! Also, gearbox does not use oil: imgur.com/LvsNbm8
you are a nut but I like you thumbs up on intro
Hand Tool Rescue --- Was the chainsaw missing the stainless spiked part that you made? What's its function, does it rest against the tree?
Those are the bucking spikes that do grab the tree in order to put some pressure on the chain cutting into the wood.
👌
bacon ..... that is all ....
That opening is CLASSIC!! 🤣🤣👍This is one of the best!!
[GuinessGuy]Brilliant![/GuinessGuy]
I had to stop at 40 seconds just to "Like" it as the beginning was cracking me up, it had the feel of a cheesy 1970's SitCom. Loving the "chain hoist" and the "clear coat". Can't wait for the rest of the videos. That saw is awesome!
...dammit. I didn't even catch that the chain hoist was a joke, I was just trying to figure out why he was lowering it in that way for just a chain.
Greatest intro of all time also you don't destroy tools I think your restoration increases their value. You take a tool in very bad condition and return it to its glory days. The antiques are only good to look at and will eventually rust away where you preserve them for future generations to see
Dude have that intro in every video for real
Agreed 😂🤣😆
lol had me rolling
Love it. All of it. And you.
Thanks Jimmy DiResta Checkmark.
I would love to see a sitcom about the Evaporust family! Just think of the shenanigans they would get up to!
You're not the only bloke doing restorations, but you definitely are the funniest. Great intro. LOVED the clear coat. Bravo sir!
You have a certain humor coupled with attention to detail that is so unique. A friend recommended your channel, and I'm delighted.
As to chain adjustment, you don't tighten the nut at the sprocket end but push in the bar to allow mounting the chain. how strong the spring still is is how much it pushes the bar back out. THEN tighten the nut. If the spring is baffed, there will be virtually no tension but you won't know for sure until the chain bites into wood as that will want to draw the bar back and might let the chain off. (Make sure the sprocket end is tight and you should be okay.) In any event, you will be remembered fondly.
Haha, I thought it was something like that.
@@HandToolRescue It also looks like you can mount the same type of spring tensioner on the other side too.
The only thing missing from your intro was an annoying neighbor borrowing you tools!
I killed him in my belt lacer video.
Hand Tool Rescue roflm-o!
why would you kill Homer Simpson? haa haaa
I was about to say, why do you think he has this many chainsaws.
And a fist shake over the fence as you walk by .
You’re kinda like the first to start this style of old tool restoration and everyone just started following what you are doing
That intro deserves an Oscar. Bravo!! 👏👏👏
Intro was hilarious, just needed more 80s pink.
A thing of beauty.....your humor. The tool was pretty swell too. 👌
The clear coat joke will go down in my history books as one of the most nonchalant and hilarious jokes i have every heard, and will probably be highly under appreciated
Hahahaha
That intro was the most perfect thing ever.
That intro was hilarious... I cannot wait to see the rest of the restoration!
Dude, that intro alone deserves 100 likes! Dat face had me rollin'!
There are way too much excellent humour here for a tool restoration and rescue channel. Love it! Clear coat was the last strike to kill :D
And the winner of the best video intro in the history of UA-cam goes to.......!! Another great job, Eric!
Hahaha thank you!
Can't believe I laughed at your"clear coat" application.
Love the clear coat
I've got one of these that my grandpa left us. Awesome of you to make a tutorial for me!
others may have joined but you are the one true hand tool rescue god!
I always look happy. I live in Japan. Please show me your wonderful skill from now on.
I always look miserable. I live in England...
"Ugly tool chest" LOL. Love the intro
That intro was fantabulous
You coulda been polishing a turd for 20 minutes and I woulda stayed because of that intro. Sweet jeebus, dude. Awesome. Pure awesome
One thing for sure - I wouldn't want to be the guy holding it at the business end :)
Luckily, I have no friends.
Hand Tool Rescue not in real life, but you've got all of us!
Picax8398 Studio audience: “Awwww!”
it would have to be "that kid" in school that we'd get to do all the really crazy stuff.
That is the end where they put the intern(s). (They would go through them like Bar and Chain Oil.) ;-)
That opening scene was great!!!
The intro alone is brilliant!
I swear you are one of the few creators that actually make me laugh out loud as I watch (much to the wonder of any nearby observers). Loved the 90s sitcom intro!
Hahaha, thank you!
I'd watch that sitcom 😅😁
er, I guess I already do!
Great channel, one of the best restoration shows on youtube.
Thank you!
I disagree. It’s NOT one of the best. It’s THE best! 😀😀I always look forward to new videos.
Restoration videos are by far the best on YT. They're informative, amusing and genuine. Keep up the GREAT work.
That intro was amazing... And that saw is pure madness
Ball bearings and fast Running gears Need Oli, not grease. The Open bearing (not the enclosed one) gets no lubrication this way. Thats also why there is a oil screw and not a grease nipple. Please put oil in it. greetings from Germany from the technical university of munich.
Yep, definitely should have used oil in the gear box, not grease.
There are many imitators, but you sir, are the innovator! TOP WORK again!
Thank you!
Best intro in the history of UA-cam.
That's a big honkin' chainsaw nicely cleaned. Now we wait impatiently for part 2...
Love the intro!😂
And the restoration too of course😁
Hi from Russia! I watched all your videos - you are super !!!
When one of our restoration OG’s post something, we immediately click and like. Thank you for showing me ‘this’ side of UA-cam, I’ve been hooked on restoration vids ever since I first saw yours. You da man.
Thank you for watching!
That opening was on point! Bravo!
Best..... Intro...... EVER!!!!
That engine is bigger than my first motorcycle.
I am still chuckling over the "Clear Coat". 😄 I watched a "restoration" of a compressor the other day where the kid just took it apart and put it back together again without doing any restoring. He then painted it with a roller. It went on for hours and was as satisfying as a cold bed bath. The Bandwagon is groaning and creaking on its axles 😄
best intro. period.
LOLGreat intro Love the new Grffix at the beginning. Wish you had started it. Bet its loud.
Greatest intro ever. I can't wait for season 2 when Danny DeVito joins the cast and you guys stop doing anything of value and just cocaine and eat pancakes.
Awesome ...
Josh Young
How do you know we are not already in Season 2?
@@HandToolRescue Hand tool rescue looks like a bird!
"Cocaine" as a verb.
Thank you so much for this. I've spent the day crying in my car and this somehow cleaned my soul. Hooray for weird tools!
No crying!
@@HandToolRescue I'm all better now. The internet has saved me, again
seriously. there are so many copy cats now. you are an inspiration obviously.
It actually blows my mind.
@@HandToolRescue ive probably watched all your videos like 20 times each. fun stuff.
Your Awesomes thank for being the best! and what the hell is a two man chainsaw, Never heard of such a thing until NOW!!
not only are there two man chainsaws, but there are two man chainsaws with power on each end for milling
Best intro yet! How long did it take to cut that "crown" on the bandsaw??? My bandsaw sheds a tear whenever I approach it with stainless :)
Close to infinity hours. It was brutal.
That sounds about right - if not a little quick :)
@@HandToolRescue jimmy wouldnt lend you one of his industrial sized band saws?
Crown = bumper spikes aka bucking dogs
Bravo
Clear coat!
Glad you stuck with the canary yellow. I lived in the city were these chainsaws, weed eaters and even go karts were made. Lake havasu City,Az. I even worked for McCulloch for a few months before they went belly up in 97. I was a machine operator in which I made connecting rods and once I got good at that then I was moved up to a CNC operator making pistons for weed wacker motors. It was a great job. My city has the actual London bridge from london in which Robert P. McCulloch bought back in the early 70's and had it disassembled in london, shipped over and then reassembled and in doing so he created his own little island. If anybody want's to go to a desert paradise then go to my town. Nice rebuild and I hope you will be getting that engine going soon...
Dig the opening. also love my official Hand Tool Rescue mini wrench
Woohoo! Thanks!
That screwdriver at 4:40..... that came from AvE!!! RELEASE THE SHMOO!
Less of the 12yo potty mouth tough guy act and he would have a fantastic channel.
That intro is the greatest thing in my life right now!!
DUDEZILLA! Yeah there are others coping you BUT they will ALWAYS lack your awesome humor and your GREAT production values!
Thank you!
Just for this intro HTR deserves a like subscribe and patreon support!
Haha thank you!
"That's not a screwdriver...This is a screwdriver!"
That's the first thing I thought too!
love your humor, with the clear coat
Awesome video! We need a part two of the motor being rebuilt and getting to see it work
Oh, you will see it.
Great opening very funny. Het sweet large screwdriver you should make some of them and sell them!
The screwdriver is AvE’s design, he had a couple made with small scale production and they’re like a couple hundred bucks made out of titanium and wood
w00t! My joke made it in a HTR video! I feel so spechul!
Best restoration channel on UA-cam... The others, well, when 9000 years old they reach, look as good they will not...
That intro was perfect, please keep using it
That intro was 5/5.
Took me 5 seconds to hit the like button :-)
The intro was tippy top, top notch!
That intro just set a new standard for restoration videos.
Hahahaha
4:35 You call that a screwdriver? THIS is a screwdriver!
I guess all the other restoration channels are playing follow the leader?!
Some, for sure.
In my opinion my mechanics is much better, that guy is a perfectionist!
@@notthisguyagain8557 Perfectionist? He goes way too far with everything. Polishes way to many knobs!
jeremy jensen ...so restoring tools as the would’ve been as if you just opened it right out of the box is bad in your eyes?
@@notthisguyagain8557- In my eyes your comments are bad. Stop leaving hurtful ones. If you like other restoration channels better, you don't have to rub it in this guys face !
Wow, I did not expect an intro to a tool restoration channel to be amazing.
That's a big, beautiful behemoth of a chainsaw. Why do I suddenly feel the need for such a beast?
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeess !!!!!
Единнственный весёлый реставратор на ютьюбе :-)
Clear coat was pure genious! Good job!
DUNNO ABOUT THE REST OF YOU BUT I CLICKED 'LIKE' BEFORE THE INTRO WAS EVEN DONE. GOLD.
2 men,,,,
1 chainsaw
Best intro since 1985
Please keep restoring there's tools are to be maintained and used not left in a museum to be looked at. Love the humour
If I wasn't already subscribed THAT INTRO alone would have convinced me.
That intro was fantastic
My grandfather had a saw very similar to this one. I could almost smell the bar oil and sawdust smell that was always present whenever he was using it.
Got my wrench! That thing is an absolute beauty! By far my favorite tool around the house.
Awesome!
That clear coat joke was frickin hilarious my dude
Alright Bob with the classic intro
You are the Pro of Restoration.
That intro was the best
The Bobby duke of restoration 🖤
Your channel rocks my friend. I've been binge watching since it was recommended to me. Your little comedic elements are the best. Love your wench too.
I don’t know what all the nostalgia is about with that old fashioned adjustable wrench. I used to use one of those when I was a kid to strip bolts in Grandad’s garage shop.
Parts cleaning is one of the most satisfying parts of your videos tho...
You have that chain and bar looking beautiful. I can't wait to see what the rest looks like.
