A tainted, decaying Middle-Earth that's killing the Elves is something that never crossed my mind.

Because Tolkien needed an excuse to explain why there was no more magic or fantasy in our world today…
    Elves? Oh, they went home.
Dwarves? Oh, they went back underground to stay forever.
Dragons, Giant eagles, unicorns, and all other mythical creatures?
    Dead or gone forever…. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I know it’s complicated, but not all elves lived in valinor and many called middle earth home.

@to4mac, good call out. I'm really talking about the Noldor Elves here (as they are 99% of the story of the elves) but I really should have specifically said that. I dont think I ever did. It's a fair point, thanks!
Now I gotta go apologize to Thranduil... sheesh... as if he isn't a jerk enough already 🙄

I think it's even more complicated than that! Even elves who only lived in Middle Earth apparently still can get the call to Valinor (or the sea/which really takes you into space -- wow, but hey that's Tolkien) and go. That said, I think it's a bit of an open question as to whether they (non-Noldor) eventually go OR need to go/diminish somehow if they don't. Supposedly the endgame of Arda is a big battle when Morgoth comes back from the void and we get all of eru's creations singing a new song. Not sure if elves are in Valinor or Middle Earth matters, although I think you are right it comes down to how the Noldor elves can't make things as permanent as Valinor, so they eventually want to go back. Seeing such profound change would be pretty tough on the psyche after living in Valinor and being unable to re-create it in ME -- which is why they also viewed human's mortality as a "gift". @@thegreyhavens167

Also it appears that magic throughout Middle Earth decreases with time so when the elves first arrived they were at the height of their power, the longer they stayed their power began to decrease thus by the end of the 3rd age most had left for Valinor.

I don't see Middle Earth being poisonous to the elves and being the reason they leave anywhere in the Silmarillion. Is this lore that is only in Amazon's Rings of Power?

Yep - totally canon. It's a minor plot point in the sims, vaguely eluded to in the main trilogy, and extremely well documented and dissected in other works and letters from Tolkien. There are 100s of pages of Tolkien dedicated to it. Though I am putting my own spin on it a bit, of course, as everything is my personal read on it :)
      Here are the basics:
      * elves spirits live forever (or more properly, as long as the Earth)
      * their bodies should as well, but Morgoth corrupted middle earth, so their bodies become imperfect too.
      * over time their bodies "fade" or "burn out" and all that is left is their spirit; invisible, unable to interact with the physical world.
      * time does this to them
      * only in timeless Valinor can they heal and prevent this
This is actually why they made the rings in the first place. To prevent fading, decay, and the progression of time from fading them so they could continue to live in middle earth. And that's why they have to leave when the rings lose their power.
What do you think? If you want to know more, search for the "fading" of the elves and you will probably find a lot of info.
(love or hate RoP, I get it, but they actually got this one pretty much right. they just sped up the timeline by a lot, as movies and TV shows do. but aside from that, this plot line is pretty much right)
