Imagine what could happen if you left a type of bird - for example… finches - alone on a lush planet without predators for hundreds of millions of years. What kinds of incredible forms might evolve? If you consider that mammals grew from a few rodent-like species into elephants, whales, horses, bats, and primates in a much shorter period after the extinction of dinosaurs - you’ll start to realize just how incredible things might get.
This concept is the idea behind one of the most detailed speculative biology projects ever created; Serina, the World of Birds. This epic multi-million year journey was created by Dylan Bajda, an incredible artist and writer.
So, let’s get started at the very beginning of the saga, with the introduction of life on the moon of Serina.

It's crazy to see how birds who are the descendants of dinosaurs and are avian dinosaurs themselves have the capacity to actually "re-evolve" back to their former "dinosaur-selves" when given the chance and the niches they once filled back then.
"they are evolving, just backwards"
After Dinosaur extinction, Avian dinosaur could actually turn back into their non-avian couson but they didn't as Mammol filled in the gap instead. Fun to think that it actually just a right time and situation that mammal can became the domiant race.
It makes sense too, look at a terror bird, it’s frighteningly like a large raptor both in niche and appearance
yes it is fascinating and quite possible. While you can't reevolve lost traits, you can evolve new similar features again and again.

As a breeder of canaries I find this very fascinating. In recent decades, very bizarre canary breeds have been created through artificial selection such as the gibber italicus and giboso espagnol. I can see what tens of millions of years of natural sexual selection can do. Too bad it's a thought experiment that we could never do in real life, but that doesn't make it any less exciting.

Wow I have never heard of those canary breeds before, but if I'm honest they look horrifying- there's no way that's a healthy happy bird, although I'd be glad to be proven wrong
but yes there's equally bizarre breeds of pigeons for example, like fantails, frillbacks and pouters
@@camo2156there’s no way that’s healthy for them:/ those unfortunate enough to be born into this subspecies likely live painful and relatively short lives if i had to guess
I would love to see this with other creatures too. What would a world of purely cattle evolve into after tens of millions of years left alone? Or how about tortoises and turtles? Or elephants? The possibilities are so fascinating.
A planet of Turts would be something I'd love to see. I imagine if there isn't anything else but insects that fly maybe a future Turtoid (lets say a good 80 million years) develops flight after it's ancestors develop a means to climb.
I've considered a turtle setting for many years but these projects take such a long, long time to work out that I doubt I will ever get there.
@@lizerdspherex I'd imagine that in your scenario rather than turtles taking to the sky some of the insects would stop flying.
Yes they would be preyed upon, but with all the empty niches on the ground there are more than enough opportunities for them to thrive there.
That said ofc given enough time the niches of airborn predators would be filled, possibly by a Turtle descendant.
Forget mammals and reptiles I'd love to see an age of insects arrise on a highly oxygenated planet
I'd love to see a carboniferous type scenario, with excessive oxygen and humidity.
Add to that dragonflies, salamanders, and catfish and and let the clock go wild.

I want there to be a Serina-like project where you take the objectively worst creatures on the planet (Koalas, Pandas, etc.) Put them in an environment where they can be left alone for long enough, and see what, if anything, could come from it.

It probably wouldn't go anywhere. Both the panda and koala have taken up extremely specific roles, so adaptations of any kind would be very difficult for them.

I once stumbled upon the claim, marsupials could never evolve into something like whales. I highly doubt that since I'm convinced evolution always finds a way. I would love to see a concept like this

@@dani.lepore9410 true. But they could rob onto shores to give birth. That would require them to evolve into not exactly whale-shape, but almost. Like seals, but more streamlined
There is a water possum that has bands of muscle around the opening of it's pouch, so it can close it's pouch in a watertight seal as is dives so the Joey's don't get wet. However there isn't too much air in the pouch so it can only make short dives with the joeys

@Mullerornis Have you seen that fish that has teeth on its tongue that it uses to crack shells against the top of its mouth? Teeth are not supposed to go there, but it is a thing.
I can see this kind of development occurring as insects grow tougher and the need to grind them up before swallowing arises.
The ardvargs could evolve a sandpaper like texture on the tongues and gums. With that the first step towards teeth would be taken and we'd be on our way to seeing horrifying tooth tongued organisms diversify.
What a lovely way to ruin my own day.

technically there were finches too, so according to evolution, since clades can't be evolved out of, all of the birds on this moon are technically types of finches and canaries

Speculative evolution (actually evolution in general, but especially speculative evolution) has been one of my favorite things ever for years, I'm so glad this channel exists, omg.
The way you present all your videos in such a factual way is incredible, because the suspension of disbelief is able to be very prominent. I always feel like I’m watching a documentary on another planet, but without traditional cheesy fake documentary touch. Great work!!!!!!!

You can easily tie Serina with AT since it's confirmed that the moon itself was seeded by humans or post-humans from distant future

Serina has been one my favorite things to follow when I'm on my breaks at work - the level of thought put into the evolution and speciation of so many lines of life forms is staggering, plus Bajda's art is simply beautiful.

If you are looking for more interesting speculative evolution projects, may I suggest Phtanum B? It's an alien biosphere that lives on an ammonia-choked super-earth, with megafauna abundant due to its high biomass content. Not to mention that there is interesting lore surrounding humanities arrival and colonisation of the planet!

Sadly, I doubt they could. The wings of modern birds are far too specialized to be returned to a clawed, grasping hand, nor I can imagine any long tail forming from that stubby thing modern birds have, not to mention teeth.
At best I can see some of them adopting the shape of terror birds, imagine a 2 meter tall secretary bird or a fast running marabou stork. Pure nightmare fuel.

Birds have a cluster of genes in their mouth that turns teeth into beak…scientists have reverse engineered it and formed a chicken embryo with teeth(which wasn’t allowed to live for ethical reason)
I would like to think that the finches on Serina would have evolved in such a way that their teeth inhibiting genes would be removed and they’d have teeth(which is much more helpful than beaks for hunting and eating in general)
The bumblet clade of serinan finches evolves keratin teeth from their beaks but no real teeth ever return because the gene for it causes embryonic death.
I like how birds are descendants of dinosaurs, and here they evolved into dinosaur like creatures again.
I have been a fan of The World of Serina for a long time and I'm glad to see it represented here on YT now
By the way, this is not Dylan Bajda's only amazing project (though it is the most active). There is also Eden paleo-zoological park (jurassic park but better), Sheatheria (very old, a speculative world that has everything from sapient prairie dogs to eldritch horrors) and Pluvimundus (a newer, more a scientifically plausible version of Sheatheria).

All Tomorrows and now Serina? This is the year for speculative evolution!
Basically they diversify into a more Earth like variety of small herbivorous bird species, then further develop into the modern earth’s variety of flying birds and small flightless birds then species of large flightless birds like the ones present in the previous 100 thousand years of our world emerge. From there they become more and more like the non avian dinosaurs from over 66 million years ago, from there it’s truely an incredibly new and unique planet, more so then any time beforehand. I love the whole thing

I once saw one of my classmates reading serina during class, and because i found speculative biology interesting, i learned about this really cool story
This idea of seeding planets with just a few earth animals and seeing where evolution takes them seems fascinating. I'd love to see where a pure arthropod word would go

Thank you for presenting this. You were right it is a riotous spectacle of imaginary speculative evolution! Some things seem possible and even. But I need to know more about the moon. What is the gravity first of all, the solar cycle (how long does day last)? Are there other moons? what kind of planet does Sirena orbit? What are the oxygen levels, in fact the chemical makeup of the oceans and atmosphere? So much of that impacts the sizes of all these different lines.
Less gravity (allowing for truly huge flying birds), I think a similar day cycle too. Atmospheric makeup should be Earthlike. The moon orbits a gas giant.
This channel is great! I don't have any special interest in sciences, however this channel has got me hooked.
Finally, I've been waiting for someone to cover Serina. It is truly one of the most detailed speculative evolution projects I've ever seen

I keep rewatching this series over and over because it is so interesting
Ive loosely been following the project, and recently rereading it after a few years of putting it aside.
And man, you gotta love what geological deep time, and a few mass extinction level events can do to just a few root body plans. Finches and mosquito fish, millions of years on a world all their own, and a handful of events to shake things up at the right times.

Awesome project and great video, loving all the speculative evolution stuff you've been putting out! I had an idea somewhat similar to this, but a junkyard world where the pest species of earth wind up and evolve over time. Rats, roaches, fleas, mosquitos, sea gulls, etc.
curious archive by far has some of my favorite content out of any of the channels I subscribe to. I'm a big fan of worldbuilding, history, cultures, dinosaurs, etc. and this channel has it all. So cool, thank you for making these videos.

My favourites are the plesiosaur birds. The sauropod ones are also pretty cool, I guess birds with long necks are just unusual enough to be really frickin cool.
