Another great point about the “normal” species. If you are sharing your photos with an international or even national audience, just because it’s a common animal where you are doesn’t mean that it won’t be thoroughly enjoyed by a viewer where it is considered exotic.
So true that most new wildlife enthusiasts like myself are hung up on the sharpest photo instead of the most interesting, I just loved this tutorial, thank you Simon
I’ve been there! Welcome.
Incredible advice from a master photographer! Oh the time I've wasted looking for the sharpest photos while ignoring all the ones that seemed to express something, making them all the more interesting. Simon, you never fail to give the most amazing techniques and advice. Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
Claire, I’m working on a video course for wildlife photography. Can I use your comment in promotional material, with attribution?
@@simon_dentremont Yes of course!
@@clairehachey2189 Thanks!
I think the duck would be saying “brrrr it’s chilly 🥶🦆”
Thank you so much for this video. Especially the wind direction with birds and shooting in bad weather.
Welcome Chris!
you wouldn’t know how much i respect this guy
We have about 4 osprey families in the neighborhood. Has gotten to the point where I don’t pay attention as I havev1000’s of pics. Your advice to keep taking pictures made me think. I don’t have the Osprey fishing yet, and thinking about the lighting on them….well, you just made them exciting again. Thanks for all your tips.
That is awesome!
Fantastic advice! The best tip you gave, for me, is, don't look for the sharpest, look for the interesting, expressive ones. My photos are never that sharp so I already have a head start on that, lol! I love backlit wildlife too and have done it by accident (just grabbing the shot because most are taken on the dog walk and I don't get chance to plan!) and always been really pleased with those shots. My challenge to myself, is to capture a bird's breath in the air.... I love your image of that.
These have been incredibly helpful. I’ve wanted to get a photo of a large white-tailed buck without distracting trees which is tough to do where I live given the deer stick to the woods. I finally had a chance to photograph a large buck in velvet last weekend. I nearly sprinted across a field to reposition myself to good side light and he eventually walked up and I got a beautiful pic that makes his antlers look like they’re glowing!
One of my most fav birds to shoot in my backyard are the little Chickadees :). Even the Junco, which is my most frequent visitor right now are wonderful to shoot!!
Agree!
Really interesting video Simon, also great to have a reminder about not neglecting the common species. Very easy to stay home thinking there's nothing to image with a garden full of birds outside👍
Very true!
Some of the best and most useful advice I think I’ve heard from a YT photography channel. Thanks for sharing.
Wow, thanks!
i love wind to smell approach and the perspective from common and uncommon
Thanks very much!
I finally found the real deal on photography tutorials.
Tyvm, Sir!
Happy to help!
I like the tricks. You make it sound so easy, Simon. I wish I had the eastern Canada as my back yard. Seriously, it's not an excuse for taking average bird photos. Your birds look absolutely fantastic.
So nice of you
Even if the background is not ideal your tips just allowed me to take my best photo to date of ducks in flight and really close, not even 20m away. Was really happy once at home reviewing them. Among a bunch of nearly on focus ones, there she was, gold, tack sharp and great pose. Made the two hours out in the cold worth every second.
Awesome!
For someone who has a camera for only one month having someone sharing knowledge makes the learning process so much easier. The panning technique was what allowed me to get those shots due to low shutter speeds (F3.5 at 1/400 iso 100) with reduced lightning due to passing clouds. The best one which got me really happy was a bit early with better lighting at F2.8, 1/2000 iso 100. Was shooting in Aperture priority mode at the time.
The most amazing tips i have encountered for so many videos on UA-cam. Thank you so much. I love your photos. Wonderful job. 💪
You are so welcome!
Hi Simon, Thank you very much for your videos! They are very comprehensive and very helpful! I have thoroughly watched them and applied your tips and techniques when shooting and editing. This latest video is very practical and full of gems! You have inspired me and others, at the same time, motivated us to raise in the bar in our creative pursuit! Merry Christmas to you from the summer of Australia! Looking forward to your new videos in 2023!
What a great video and great tips. Nice to see a fellow Maritimer. I'm an ex-New Brunswicker now living in Alberta. Subscribed!
Welcome aboard!
I think the "interesting expression > sharp photo" is a fantastic tip. Just today I took some photos of a squirrel, and the slightly softer one where the squirrel almost looks at the camera was way more appealing to me.
You have a great knack of giving really helpful tips, as well as remind your viewer of how much they have forgot or ignored. One of the best platforms out there. Well done Simon.
Glad it was helpful!
I love backlit images and side. When the conditions permit it. Awesome video! Love that bald eagle shot! 🔥
Thanks very much!
That’s why I like playing with gulls they let you get close a work with your skill set. We are in rural Oregon about a mile from the coast, so we see a lot of different birds.
Great Tips! Getting over the hunt for the sharpest picture of a set was and is still a hurdle for me!
You and me both!
Cull them for the best stories and best expressions - I always find some piece of advice in your videos that really resounds with me. Thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Hi Simon, happy to hear and learn from your videos
Glad to hear that!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Simon! You are a true gem. The wood duck says... come on spring!
Can't wait!
The most reliable advice I've found. You never disappoint. Your images are a joy to behold and your level of excellence is something to which I aspire. Thank you so much. With love from Atlanta. Cheers!

Hello Simon I'm a recent subscriber. From North central Ohio. For the last 5 years I have been lucky enough to have a pair of nesting osprey about 200 yards off my front lawn. I live literally right along the river that runs past my house and down past their nest. My favorite predator bird for sure as I have studied them alot. I believe they are underrated as their skills and how they teach their young to fish is pretty incredible. Anyway just have had the r6mk2 for a couple weeks and just love it. I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know that I'm completing confused on how the heck you don't have a couple million subscribers?? Your a big inspiration to me and you photos are just amazing brother. I'm 57 years old and pretty much strictly wildlife with occasional landscape or lightning photography. Keep up the amazing journey you have yourself on.
Thanks David! I’ve only been doing this for 7 months! But my channel is growing quickly and my UA-cam family will be big soon enough. Go get those ospreys! Note that when they poop from a perch, theyre about to take off!
Another masterpiece by Simon sir. Emotion is not the sharpest moment to discover.
Hi, Simon. Thank you so much for the tricks. I learned new tricks and knowledge from this video. Big LIKE from me. Greeting from Singapore.
My pleasure Cheiko!
Thank you so much for all the tips Simon. I definitely sent this on to my wife and son that are budding photographers. I have been following Gavin for a couple years and now you. Your wildlife shots are amazing. I recently went to Brazil and got some very cool shots of wildlife while I was there. Thank you so much again. Dean
Fantastic!
You're so talented and your teaching skills are bar none. Thanks for these amazing tips. I think I naturally know some of them but to naturally combine the fast movement of the birds and the settings of the camera clearly make bird (and wildlife) photography a wonderful challenge. Thank you Simon.
You are so welcome!

Excellent Simon. I really enjoy your presentation style. Lots of very good information, illustrated with fabulous images and the content is concise and to the point. The brevity in no way diminishes the content in fact it does the opposite, it stands out from the crowd.

Eye opener !! Thank You .
Welcome!
Again I learned something new, to focus on taking interesting photos. I know taking sharp pictures with & without artificial light. But this is an excellent idea for me. Besides, I would be interested in knowing how you make video light set-up for your youtube. I have seen others, but want to see how you do that. From you, there is a lot to learn,
Glad it was helpful!
Great tips. Always enjoy your information.
Merci René!

WOW!! Thank you for the nice tip about taking photos of the common wildlife, truthfully I had never considered that. All of your videos are just awesome, they are actually the best instructional videos about photography that I have seen on UA-cam. Thank you.

Wonderful video Simon! I'm going to challenge myself to take more photos of our year round local birds. I'm just starting to try video, it's a whole new challenge. Your videos are just so beautiful. Thank you and Merry Christmas/Happy New Year
You can do it Bob!
These tips are killer! Thanks.. I can’t wait for the holiday so I can ditch cube life for a little while and practice! I’ve been eyeing the canon 100-400 lens but I’m thinking I need to get really good using my cheap 70-250 first. I just get so frustrated I can’t get close enough.. you inspire me though to keep trying
Go for it!
Simon says: oooooooo interesting photo up close of wood duck. Wood duck says: it’s freakin cold what’s he doing here? 🤣 Happy holidays Simon.
Lol
AgAgain some really useful tips and information! Thanks Simon.
My pleasure!
another super video Simon.
Many thanks!
Practice by taking pictures of the commonplace... while recognising that 'the commonplace' is contingent - my 'commonplace' is Tui and Saddleback and Fantail and Kokako and Kiwi and Morepork... oh what I'd give for a Muscovy duck or a decent goose. Hence - how extraordinary that chain-smoking black and red thing seems to me - a bona fide GOAT exotic.
you basically nail every each you're putting out :)
Thanks!
Great advice as always Simon.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great advice, and practicing on common species is also a great tip too!
Glad you think so!
Great tips Simon. I try to use a few of these regularly. I will working the others, in hopes of seeing some photography improvements.

great tips. Being a rookie photographer you brought up a couple of points I been trying to find the perfect photo opportunity. Get out and shoot and have fun with it. I have been taking photos of the local birds at out feeder and deer in the front yard, I am getting better at it.
