If you dont have minnow traps you can use regular nets, its more difficult but put the bread near the entrance of the net so the fish are comfortable with the net and once they get super close to the bread or inside the net scoop it up by turning the net upwards so they cant swim out!
I caught like 30 fry and put them in my tank yesterday. They seem to be doing well. They're now in with the snailsplosion that happened from the couple of snails that hitched a ride in some moss I took from the creek.
Nice video. This question is for anyone that reads this. As a novice angler can you use bread as minnow bate for both freshwater and saltwater minnows?
Layne Piatt thank you. I’m here in Virginia and we are fortunate to have access to both. But I wasn’t sure if bread would work in saltwater or not. We usually use a piece of bacon and it works. I would much rather use bread if it would work. Well I guess I will try and see if it works.
we have glass minnows here but they are so tiny they would go through those traps holes.. at first i was thinking most the ones you caught also would just go through the holes in the trap.. but then ya boom.. you had a lot better ones.. though i think you just need a finer mesh trap. then you can get the little ones also.. you can just buy some material also soft type mesh and wrap your homemade one and make it more fine.. the little ones are nice though.. because you will catch more fish with them.. though the bigger ones will get you nicer fish for sure.. we also have shad here.. we can use both if you can dip net them only.. well maybe we can do a trap i need to look it up.. because i know if i could get some shad or minnows i might be able to catch some fish easier then just using fake plastics all the time. im in cali so they are strict here on laws.
Shoot who knows nowadays, everything seems to be prohibited or heavily regulated in California when it comes to being an outdoorsman. I’d send your local division of wildlife an email about that one.
Your homemade trap has a rather large gauge mesh so obviously caught the bigger ones and you placed it in the right place ...on the bottom whereas you placed the commercial one in the wrong place on that ledge too high in the water.
@@johnroby6524 Should work excellent, the creeks are probably the same as here. Minnow traps are definitely the best way to go if you're gonna leave them for a couple hours at a time. The quickest way for me is the seine when I have another person helping me but you will definitely get soaked!
those minos that you caught with the home made trap where huge ! in my creek the minos are small they almost are like tadpols
Seriously that’s true we have a creek
tai Lopez there’s plenty of those here too, just gotta go to a deeper hole
Same my minnows look like tadpoles
Good job fella.Nice to see someone out and about enjoying the pleasures of nature instead stuck to facebook
Thank you! It's good to get out and enjoy the creek

Very informative video , you should keep doing things like this 😊
Demerias Irvin thank you!
LP back at it and dropping knowledge 👀

Great job Layne keep it up
Owen J Stephens thank you!
Natural crawfish are my number 1 favorite bait for bass
Never tried much fishing with live bait, the most natural presentation there is

Sounds good!

Jonathan Wilson thank you! I couldn’t tell you anything about saltwater minnows, Ohio is quite far from the ocean lol

Jonathan Wilson I wish you good luck!
What kind of trap? is it on amazon?
Most people call them Frabill traps, they’re all over amazon
can you use these bait traps in ponds/lakes as well?
Should work wherever there is bait fish
A really good and informative video. Thank you
Thank you!
Do you have a video how to make homemade trap?
Sadly not, my dad made it spur of the moment.
You should swap the locations of the two traps.
The first trap was in a bad place really
Trap one had a current blocking access to the trap. Those little guys aren't strong enough to fight it.
Nice video. Keep up the good work homie👍
Edgar Ramirez thank you!
4:30 I was looking at those rocks thinking that was where I would slip.
Unicorn Steaks it was was too smooth and slick lol
The current was to strong for trap one.
Mel 4theTruth I should’ve put it in a smarter location
Homemade trap in a better spot?
100% lol
How did you make your homemade trap?
Hardware cloth/chicken wire and zip ties!

jdogg661420 most of the fish I caught in the video were either chubs or shiners. I outta try to catch some glass minnows eventually.
jdogg661420 nice to see that my video has reached Cali!
Thank you this will help me a lot cuz I'm a new Fisher
Helpful! Might have to make myself a trap now haha
I was surprised that the homemade trap did better than the store bought! Homemade is the way to go
Awesome vid good job thank you
You need to do more vids where you talk in them

Ok how do I make one
Buy some 1/2 in or smaller garden cage wire and make two cones out of them then put them together
Is this legal in California?

Huh?
Where can I get myself of one of those net things
Hmmm, you could buy a Seine online or try Dicks or Bass Pro. I got mine from a yard sale.
I can't hear anything you're saying with that music in the background
Why do you talk from the side of your mouth?

the last pic was of a golden redhorse :)
Didn't catch it, thanks for the correction!
@@laynepiatt Your welcome! :)

Whereabouts do you live? Minnows are great for catching crappie, hence why I'm here. I'd rather catch my own minnows than waste money buying them.
I live in southern Ohio. I've never used any for bait but I bet they'd be great!
@@laynepiatt ah nice. I live near Dayton so your method probably works just as well here.

If you only had the music down a bit

live baiting for sport is NOT COOL
It’s for educational purposes, none were harmed while filming
Shut up asshole
