When you're in the permanently dark zones of the ocean, food is so scarce that you need to conserve your energy and never move any more than you need to. So, like a lot of species that live in the deep ocean, it looks like this squid either drifts around slowly with minimal effort or just waits for food to come to it.

the camerawork -- the nightvision and the jerky too-fast movements of the camera -- are horror movie perfection. The reveal of how long those lines are, and then it keeps revealing, and keeps revealing, and oh god the camera's moving FAST, that must mean that these are even LONGER, launches this thing into monster history. I refuse to call them tentacles, how the hell would they move to feed the thing if something got caught at the edge of its reach? Would I even want to know? the answer tends to flip depending on my mood.

That's what I think's really cool about it. I wonder if this thing is related to squids or if it's its own family. It looks like it doesn't even move around, it just floats there and let's the current drag it around like a seahorse. I also wonder if it flaps it's fins to move, attract prey, or intimidate potential predators.

What's really scary is that when you get images from this deep underwater, it's completely dark, making it unable to see anything around you. So it's very hard to determine the actual size just by looking at it because there's nothing you can see to compare it to.

You'd have to have a lung capacity of an elephant and be swimming pretty deep. These won't go above 1000 feet. The water pressure must be immense at this depth. It would crush us to the size of an apple pretty quickly. That's more scary a thought than this alien squid!
