Look at those old geezers dealing with a semi crosswind landing. I used to land in front of Ray Hooks house on a 20' wide beach at Makapuu with a 90 degree crosswind which took some getting used to. I'm almost 79 and still take an old 1979 UP Condor to Cape Kiwanda (where I learned to fly in the early 70's) on the Oregon coast every couple years and soar the dune for an hour, make sure I can still do it. A year ago I gave 5 bucks to a kid to carry my glider to the top of the dune for me. Also, I took my young son up there tandem in a UP Comet there and soared for awhile. He thought it was cool and all but never took up the sport. I'm still flying my Long EZ which I built in 1993.
My dad never took up Hang Gliding, even though he helped me launch a few times back in the 70s. His love was skiing. He finally hung it up when he was 96. Now at 99 his knees are bad and he walks with a cane. I'm just 69 and after watching this decided that, after nearly 50 years, it's time to start flying again. Seriously. I just booked some lessons!
@@justhangin7186 Hey, I did it! Drove all the way to Cali and took lessons for a couple of days on Dockweiler beach. Now I'm back in AZ and have signed up for a complete training course locally! Sadly, the program doesn't start for another 7 weeks. So I'm stuck just watching videos for now.
Use to fly hang gliders in socal in the 70's and 80's then got a pilots lic flew ga for after ultralights now just started back hang gliding in Fl though almost 78. Keep going you old buggers.
It's too bad that grammar affected some people. I think it is really cool to think about flying this long. Thirty years ago saw an 82 year old launch and fly. I went and bought a glider a few weeks later. Maybe I will still be flying it past 80......
Totally awesome. I'm 66 and hope to be flying at least the next 20 years, God willing, and the river don't rise. Current glider sport 3, one of the last produced the good old u.s.a.
Must be someplace left, right? When I was a kid, it was popular to launch off the west side Shaw Butte on 19th Ave. north of Peoria Ave. Also from South Mountain by the radio towers. In the early 70s, I was a self-taught beginner in a home made kit-kite. I would ground skim off Tempe Buttes and the housing terraces of new development on the lower west slope of what's now called Piestewa Peak Park, and I would drive up to Merriam Crater east of Flag. Took a few trips to Little Mtn. near San Bernadino, then over to Torrey Pines, even cliff-launched launched with no wind off the Whitney Portal road and flew down to the highway out of Lone Pine. Almost stalled and ate it on take off. Then, life took over and I haven't flown in about 50 years. Now 69 and watching this makes me want to sign up for lessons and try it again!
Just turned 60 and after hang gliding off and on the last 27 years I had hoped to be hang gliding into my 80’s… at this point I may be just happy with being able to walk at 80 or even just make it to 80. Getting ole isn’t for wimps
@@justhangin7186 I thought so. Just looked a little different. I broke my neck in 2011 so I fly PG now, the launch is on the other side near the marine rescue or what that rescue is there. A much better fly site for HG than PG, but even for a small fly site it’s absolutely stunning looking around the site there. Good on you legend, thanks for sharing 👍🏽
Excellent & kudos to Moyes for making such bomb proof & safe glider. Based on life experience, including getting my dad back into swimming when 90 years young, I reckon >30% of the range of activity we are capable of doing, with reasonable safety, is attitude. Determinants of this 'can do' age related attitude is largely formed y the society we live in, particularly friends & family.

Staying strong, staying fit and healthy. That the secret to what these guys are doing. They love to fly so they keep in shape.
Beautiful flying site. I am in my 70’s, guess I am just a kid! Thanks for posting
yeah go back in line and wait your turn little fella. you are way too young for this sport. 🤣😄
The Moyes Mars was a popular glider from the 1980’s. Still flying well after 40 plus years, great product durability. Nice flying Doug.
These guys are cool.. a great example to everybody, go live life- don't give in to the rocking chair!

In the end he got enough lift off the rotor to reach the thermals off the tarmac. Brill.
WOOHOO!!!!!
I fly bags with a couple guys in their 80s and plenty in their 70s...
This gives me the urge to do it again!
@phillippierce5974 yep get back into it mate 👍

Simply awesome.
If I had nice places like that to fly near Phoenix, I might still be flying at age 71.

I would love to do this.
It's easy enough to learn with a good instructor, try a tandem first . I started when I was 47 .
Awesome landings, but it must be sad to do so.😁

@Just Hangin Wow. I flew there in Moyes Mega2 maybe 40 years ago. It has changed so much I didn't recognise it.
