  • An exploration of the Shrewsbury to Llanymynech disused railway, known locally as The Potts Line due to funding from the North Staffordshire Railway Company. A line that was an economic disaster from the first day, but with a history of stop start during its whole lifetime makes this former railway the most fascinating of them all. In part one we look at the early history and the route to Shrawardine.

    Nice retracing of the route, one of the dozens of long forgotten only to memory now.
    To see what barely remains today is so sad of a bygone era.

    at 7:07 Hanwood, there was a Halt on top of the embankment, Edgebold Halt. Siding for dairy and coal dump too.

    The first station out from Abbey Foregate Station on the Potts Line was Shrewsbury WEST Station roughly 1 mile out. It was roughly where the line crossed under Belle Vue Road by Drawell Street. The next Station was Meole Brace

    Many years ago I walked the length of the line. The track was just about to be ripped up. Most stations were intact if rather derelict. The huge army depots were still complete although minus most sidings. When I was very young I did see an Austerity tank hurtling through Meole Brace towards Hookagate

    i have always been interested in the shropshire and motgomeryshire railway since my science teacher introduced me to it ,when i was a pupil at cruckton hall school, there was a halt at cruckton this was on the right of the bridge on the road towards shrewsbury.

    Meole Brace platform was under the bridge as was the Belle vue bridge platform .

    Thanks for this great video series. There are a couple of other stretches of the Potts that you might find interesting - sorry if already know about these:
    1. About 400 yards of trackbed remains on an embankment from Reabrook Avenue to Leamore Crescent (easiest to see on the aerial photo). I think the rails were only lifted here in the late 1980s.
    2. You can get to the remains of the bridge that carried the Potts over the Welshpool line by following the footpath from Hook-a-gate through Weir Coppice. There is also a good length of trackbed here, eventually leading towards what remains of the later depot at Hook-a-gate
    There is a really good free map at timemap.shoothill.com/ which overlays the historic map of Shrewsbury with the modern-day map - and I've found it really interesting for tracing the exact course of the old railway.

      Thanks for the info below. I will seek to get a look at that book about Shrewsbury. Yes It would be good to see some aerial photographs of the route, they are always very revealing!

    Excellent Video, I live locally and have done some research on this area when I was younger, both school & personal interest. You can still find evidence of the line through aerial photographs as Prontford has mentioned. The Asda car park was once a Prisoner of war camp, would the railway have taken them there? While the Meole Brace station was just a small wooden platform under the bridge, a picture exists of the tiny station.

      Thomas Perring There is a bit about the POW camp in Barrie Trinder's book "Suburbs of Shrewsbury":
      "During the First World War the factory [i.e. Richard Frances' carriage works] was adapted as the Old Coleham Prisoner of War Camp and Remount Depot. Photographs show German submariners strolling by the boundary barbed wire, with smoking stoves and laundry hung out to dry in the distance."
      There are a couple of photos at www.shropshireremembers.org.uk/german-prisoners-of-war-in-shrewsbury/ (you may have seen these before). The Abbey and viaduct for the mainline are recognisable. I don't know if the Potts would have taken the prisoners to the camp. Trinder mentions that no siding was ever constructed from the camp to the Shrewsbury & Hereford line, much to Richard France's indignation. However it looks like the carriage works used the sidings from the mainline at Old Coleham to deliver materials (like bricks) rather than the Potts, as that railway was closed from 1880 until Colonel Stephens reopened it 1911. Not sure about what they did after 1811.
      I've never seen a photo of Meole Brace station, but it sounds like it was the same sort of thing as Shrewsbury West station, under the Hereford Road bridge (opposite Drawwell Street).
