While I'm glad this car never replaced the Mustang, I still loved the Probe, especially this second generation model. It was a good car, especially for its time. And I think the styling on the Probe GT still looks smart even today. I think the Probe is an underrated car. I miss it.

I think the main problem with todays' cars is that their designs are not as unique and elegant as 90's coupes... That's why they still look fresh :) Yes, there is no new Probe or MX6 now, it is said to be one of the reasons for that but hey can you look at the new Honda NSX and then the original one, we can easily realise how bad todays' cars are being designed comparing 90s...

thas1227 I think the Mazda3 is a pretty good example of modern “Less is more” car design on cheap cars. Unlike say the Civic or Elantra, there’s fewer body lines than this probe.

Car still ran when we had to get rid of it for safety reasons.

I miss my 91 LX, what a great car. My first car, too. I was so blown away by the power adjustable mirrors and auto-down window at the time. Less amazing was the automatic seatbelts and headlights, but I still have very fond memories of it. The Vulcan 3.0L is a pretty good match for this car, and makes it feel way peppier than it actually is.
I'd love to own one again someday, but I think most of them have rusted down to the wheels by now.

The Probe reminds me of a mini C5 Z06 or the 2005 Ford GT ( $150,000) one.

My Dad bought a silver SHO in 92 and as a teen-ager it was such an awesome car to me. Especially when I'd take it out and consistently beat my friends 5.0L mustang haha. Also gas station attendants usually freaked out when they popped the hood to check the oil, and had a lot of questions about the motor/car.

I stopped at a fast food place on the way from the airport to my parents' house. When I came out to get into the Probe, a bunch of kids were huddled around it as if it were some kind of expensive exotic car. The base styling is the best. Gorgeous car.

Definitely a market for affordable sporty/pony cars. Like the neon srt 4, caliber srt 4, cobalt ss, Hyundai tiburon Tuscani, Mitsubishi eclipse, mitMitsubishi Lancers, Subaru wrx. But companies need to keep the cars affordable, basic and great performance for a small price. And a turbo or supercharged v4 or v6 with easy to find upgrades. So anyone can afford one and upgrade it when they have money. It bridges a gap for people who cant afford a v8 pony or muscle car and cant afford a luxury high end tuner car like the neon srt 4 etc. The 90s mazda rx7, nissan 300zx are good examples. That's why the cobalt ss was so popular compared to the better neon srt 4. Because of price. The cobalt ss was cheap, not fancy, quick, easy to mod, cheap to fix and it was easily driven 12 months a year any weather because of the fwd. Though awd would of been best of both worlds and made it more fun but would of cost more

I ordered a ‘94 Probe GT 5 speed in Vibrant White. Virtually identical to the test car. My first car as a new lieutenant in the USAF. Was fortunate to be stationed for a bit in coastal CA while I owned the car. It was made for CA twisties!! Loved that car…albeit a bit underpowered…certainly by today’s standards.

That white GT looks so slick. In a sea of dull grey crossovers, I'd be over the moon to drive one today. Regulations and market demands make a FWD NA V6 powered coupe with exceptional visibility and low weight an impossibility these days. Maybe the 86 twins are the closest we have today. They're a little faster to 60, brake and handle better and have the benefit of more modern engineering, but they are compromised in their own ways -a portly somewhat bloated crash-friendly design being one of them. Ah well, it was a nice segment of vehicles, lost to time.

The big problem with this car was the Mitsubishi ignition in the 4 cylinder. The ignition module was included inside the distributor. It got so hot that it would burn the module up. Leave you totally stranded. I finally fixed mine by running the control wires to a GM HEI ignition mounted on the fender well.

They really were cool little cars. I had 3 from age 16-25 (93 base, 93 GT, 96 GT) and loved all 3. Never gave me any problems and the 5 spd GTs could definitely hold their own back in the day. Good luck finding a nice example of one nowadays though....☹️

I had a 1994 Ford Probe GT in "Wild Orchid" color (purple). It was on Car and Driver's 10 best cars list. That car was quick, cornered excellently. Except for traffic jams, I had fun everywhere I drove. I hated trading that car in. I am 6`2" and it was a little short on leg room. It had a lot of electrical problems though. The gas gauge was... peculiar.

+BadlndsBob HAHA, some British cars like the Jensen Interceptor were like that apparently where you'd prod the fuel gauge and suddenly you'd go from having no petrol to a half or even full tank LOL.

Samthebam4044 Really? One time I pulled onto the interstate with 3/4 of a tank. One minute later, "Sorry, just kidding, you tank is empty!" So, I had to keep track of my tank's volume in other, less dependable, ways.

Let's put it this way. If the Probe had sold BETTER than the Fox-body Mustang, the current 2016 Mustang would be a transverse-engine FWD coupe with an Ecoboost 2.0T from a Focus ST.
I for one am happy the Probe failed because of this reason.

I like these even the 4 cylinder model is not bad as long as it has the 15" tire/wheel package. I used to own a 626 that uses the same engine/transmission as the probe GT and I was very happy with it. Smooth, Free Revving V6 although NOT a power monster of an engine. It was pretty good back in the early 90's though.

What's going on with the audio, I've noticed many of the retro reviews of late are either in the left or right channel. This one is predominantly left channel until about 4:30, then the right channel cut in. I appreciate faults in the source, especially if it was a stereo recording but the stereo has desegregated, however, this should be easy to compensate for by summing the channels into a mono mix.
Really enjoying the retro reviews, please keep them coming.
