This was a great video with clear instruction. I just started playing with a group of very patient people who are willing to teach me the rules. There are about 20 of us who rotate players, and no one cares what level you’re at. We just want to play, get some exercise and have fun. I love it.
I'm going to an event this weekend with pickleball as one of the activities. This confirmed that I'll be sitting it out. Very thorough video, well done! I'm just very slow with this stuff. 😅 I'm still really impressed with the video and appreciate how well thought out it was. I might be able to understand what I'm watching better at the event! Thank you.
I too, find it difficult to understand the points and who should serve. Your reaction time must be at optimal level to succeed at this game. The courts are filled with excellent players early. Try coming during the hottest part of the day and you can find a court to play on.
Thank you very much. Very well explain. I've seen other videos on UA-cam were they explained part of it. And left me puzzled. Im going to buy the pickleball set. And when I go to play I'll know all the rules. I never been inside a pickleball court. But I'm sure I'm gonna love it. Specially for the exercise. You guys ROCK!!! Very good teachers.❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thanks for the explanation! My mom and I want to play and we got everything except the serving rules. That got a little confusing. But maybe it's one of those things where it makes sense when you are doing it.
Thanks for the technical position basics video, I learned at least half of what I need to know in 5 minutes! At 4:16 I did get thrown off when mentioning changing sides when really meaning to swap servers of the same team.
O M G I just started playing this week. I’m obsessed and good but the rules I do not understand lol I played sports my entire life and the rules to this game are so confusing to me 🫣😬🤷🏻♀️ I’ll eventually get them, watching these videos?! Hopefully lol 🏓💪🏻 left side of the court my back hand is my weakness. Thank goodness we have tons of courts here in South FL so I can practice on the half court walls to help me with.
Thanks for the info. First half made a lot of sense but once that scoring info hits, damn, lol. As someone who knows tennis and table tennis, I get it, just needed a rewatch of that section, but its so convoluted. Examples are great to clarify but then the exception start game with 0-0-2 is dropped in which adds potential confusion… i think extra clarification is needed at that point… such as mentioning that its because the start only has one player serve before the switch… thats why it starts with 0-0-2, rather then 0-0-1.
nobody ever seems to explain n which siide server 2 starts serving from ... right, left or where they are standing when server 1 loses. can someone tell me?
Thanks! Do you always serve to the same landing box or do you switch to serving to the other side (opponent) after a point is scored like in tennis? Also, how many attempts when you are serving?
You always serve cross court. But you will not always serve from the same side of the court. The player who starts the game on the right will always be even (score) when serving from the right and odd when serving from the left. One attempt at the amateur level. Pros have recently implemented a “let” meaning you get a do over only if the serve clips the tape and lands in.
I get if the #1 server wins the first point, then #1 servers from the left side. If #1 server loses the point, then does the #2 server serve from the left side or the right side?
Ok I got it ! Except for the last instruction regarding the very beginning of the game ! Why would you begin the game as 0-0-2? Doesn’t server #1 start the game on the right side? So it should be 0-0-1
Once your first serve losing a point and it goes to the second server, does the second server serve his/her first point from the right side or the left side first?
Great video, but one thing confuses me. If you lose a rally, why doesn't the other team score a point? In the example given, if it's 5-3-1 at the start of the rally and the serving team loses, when they switch servers, wouldn't it be 5-4-2, not 5-3-2?
Now I know how ro play pickles all,, thank you :) That being said, I personally find the rules boggy - even if you articulate well and strive to teach clearly like you guys. If I am going to game with small paddle, I choose ping pong or racquetball - and it's legal to smash the ball.
Pretty good video covering the basics in 5 minutes! It might have been better to say it is the Non volley zone, also referred to as the kitchen because the official name is the non volley zone, not visa versa. Showing the return and run and serve and stay is so important, and seeing it done on the video should help those that come from tennis and just stay back and never get to the nvz. At the end of the video when you explain the 0-0-2 , you say "server 2". Some might watch the video and think they would actually say zero zero server 2. Otherwise it is another good video.
Thank you for your feedback Sandra. We feel like in the video we properly referred to both names (non-volley zone and kitchen). Not sure what you meant by that critique. The area is MOST commonly referred as the kitchen but is also referred to as the non volley zone (officially) is what we were getting at with the order. Thank you for your feedback! Our hope is to learn and become as possible for future videos.
@@playpickleball-com It was a comment not really a critique, but it's like a person's legal name is Robert, but he goes by Rob (or mine is Cassandra, but I am referred to as Sandy). The proper name is the Non Volley Zone, but it is referred to as the kitchen (which no one knows why). That was the main idea, the real meaning first, and then what others call it second. You all are doing a great job on the videos.
idk, that’s exactly the idea I got from the video bacause they said “non-volley-zone OR kitchen” since they said kitchen second I assumed it was the commonly used nickname from that area…. i don’t think one person watching this video would be confused by the wording
So basically modified tennis rules with squash/badminton traditional scoring methodology. Questions; When can the kitchen zone be legally entered following a volley? Is sledging allowed? (Saying mean things to your opponent to gain psychological advantage) Is backhand serving allowed? I'm assuming overarm isn't legal.
Yes. As long as your momentum doesn’t carry you into the kitchen after a volley you can enter it again after your opponents contact the ball. “sledging” as you define it is allowed in some instances but referees can offer verbal warnings in officiated matches. Serving backhand is illegal as long as the swing path and contact point meets the requirements.
Okay my wife and I started to play and there are some questions I have. After watching a professional pickleball tournament on UA-cam some things I saw the pros do, do not align with what I have learned. Video I am referencing my concerns ua-cam.com/video/RARj0Xnebqc/v-deo.html I was taught that when you serve you have to remain on your side and you must not be on your teammates side. However, I was again watching the pros and this woman was on her teammates side when she served. (4:02 mark in the attached video link) Lastly, I saw the same guy continuously going on his teammates side and returning the ball essentially not allowing her to hit it. I found it so rude and my wife and I were both confused by this. I didn't know why he didn't just let his teammate return the ball but instead he literally was way on her side in front of her stealing the return. What's up with that? (4:43 mark in the attached video link) His play was extremely annoying because he kept doing this. Are pickleball rules different from person to person or?
Good question. The line down the middle of the court is mainly for the serve. You do not have to play on your side. Many people will play more than half of their court for the sake of strategy. Doing this is a way to cover up weak or attackable areas (i.e. someone’s forehand in the middle coming yo the other side of the courts to cover that players backhand. At the higher level it is creates more offense and openings on the court. Most players learn to play their side when first starting out but that starts to change as you get more advanced.
that dude in the white selkirk shirt in the background is GIGA handsome holy cow. also, excellent instruction, perfect video for showing people new to the sport :)
Bruh this is just the outdoor version of badminton. I thought I had to actually learn new skills to play this game, but looks like I can apply some, if not most, of my badminton skills here
If you are server 1 and on the right side of the court you score will always be even. Not 5-3-1,you said your score wrong or out of rotation. Otherwise great video. Thanks
Yes we chose a random combination of numbers to show the progression of scoring vs not scoring but understand what you are saying and see how that could be confusing.
The only thing I got confused on is non-volley zone. If you hit the ball BEFORE you land your front foot into the non-volley zone, that would be considered a 'foul' or 'end game'. Makes sense if your foot lands on the non-volley zone first and then you hit the ball back, that would be an 'losing' game for the rule breaker.

Does each player on a team need to alternate their returns? Or can player 1 return multiple shots in a row?
The receiver changes back and forth consecutively!
Great over view of the game. Thanks
I’m glad you liked it!
I get if the #1 server wins the first point, then #1 servers from the left side. If #1 server loses the point, then does the #2 server serve from the left side or the right side?
I’m a new player but my understanding is server #2 serves in the position he/ she is in. Server position changes after a point is scored.
Ok I got it ! Except for the last instruction regarding the very beginning of the game ! Why would you begin the game as 0-0-2? Doesn’t server #1 start the game on the right side? So it should be 0-0-1
Interesting! Looking forward to getting out and playing

I am writing an article about Pickleball having not played the sport and this was SO helpful.
Thank you so much for your feedback! Welcome to the channel and this awesome sport!
I recommend a video how to play pickle ball in five minutes it helped me learn how to play and I watched it on the car ride to play pickle ball
Great 👍
Video starts with strategy of how the game is played before even completing the rules.
How do you serve if you're left handed? Would it just be a back hand since it's not considered an underhand serve?
it’s the same as right handed :)
Once your first serve losing a point and it goes to the second server, does the second server serve his/her first point from the right side or the left side first?
When you lose a rally on first server, servers DO NOT switch sides. The second server serves from which ever side he is currently on.
I consider myself to be reasonable intelligent.
But you got me on this one!
How so?
Great content and explanations!
Thank you!!!
Great video, but one thing confuses me. If you lose a rally, why doesn't the other team score a point? In the example given, if it's 5-3-1 at the start of the rally and the serving team loses, when they switch servers, wouldn't it be 5-4-2, not 5-3-2?
Great question. The reason it would still be 5-3-2 is because you can only score a point when you’re serving!
wheres the pickle?
In the refrigerator
Yea
Pickle was the name of the dog of the family who created the game. The dog always chased the ball, that’s why they called it pickle
Now I know how ro play pickles all,, thank you :) That being said, I personally find the rules boggy - even if you articulate well and strive to teach clearly like you guys. If I am going to game with small paddle, I choose ping pong or racquetball - and it's legal to smash the ball.
That was the shortest and best explanation of almost anything I’ve ever seen on UA-cam
Glad it was helpful!
Clear as crystal. ❤ thank you… ❤❤❤
Great! Thanks for watching!!
Why when a serving team lost a point the score didn’t go to 5-4 ? Around 4:15 timestamp
you can only score when you are serving!
