  • Murnau's earliest surviving film. I could only find this with Portuguese subtitles and no music track, so I've added English subtitles and a suitable soundtrack composed in Germany around the same time (Hans Pfitzner's 1922 Piano concerto in E-flat major).

    27:57 Apparently, this is an allusion to the painting "Die Toteninsel" by Arnold Böcklin. An actor like Conrad Veidt is perfect for the role here!

    Thanks for your efforts. I wish Masters of Cinema or Criterion would put this and The Burning Earth out as a DVD. I believe they are the only two surviving FWM films not available on DVD or BD.

    Excellent musical choice : ) works surprisingly well, actually

      Thanks. It's not a piece I knew, but I did a search for contemporary music that might work. I did a few edits to match the music with the visuals, but left the rest to chance, so there are a few jarring moments.

    Okay so I've noticed that Eigil looks at the camera a LOT. He's breaking the fourth wall a lot. I really like it I'm just wondering why

      I now have an excuse for why one of my actors kept looking at the camera in the short film I made in high school. It was just a reference to Journey into the Night, guys.

    FINALLY, at 28:57 we see Conrad! Looks as if he is playing a blind man ....
    Thank you for uploading this wonderful movie starring Conrad Veidt (THE ORIGINAL and FIRST JOKER, IN THE SILENT BATMAN MOVIE SHORTS), and for the extra effort you put into this movie - subtitles and musical score thoughtfully done, as the chosen score works quite well with the picture. Kudos!

      Conrad Veidt never played the joker and the character never appeared in the 40's batman serials.
      Think you're mistaking his role in The Man Who Laughs (1928) which was a huge influence on the eventual look of the Joker in the comics.

    Whadda stinker! Some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Even Veidt was lousy. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

      Whadda stinker! The worst comment I've ever read. The acting is typical for a film directed by Murnau. "Worship of the expression for its own sake." (Eric Rohmer)

    • @Otherladyinblack
      @Otherladyinblack 7 років тому +9

      Stinker? It is obvious that you and me haven't seen the same film. All the acting was fine and Connie was superb. And it's Murnau! Indeed a hiddem gem.

    • @donaldackerman4135
      @donaldackerman4135 7 років тому +1

      Actually, I was being charitable. It may be one of the worst movies of all time! Virtual torture. Most directors made bad movies. Did you ever see Hitchcock's first film (or his last film for that matter--- both clunkers). But, Murnau's "Burning Soil", made around the same time, was fairly good and, of course, his "Sunrise" is one of the greatest films of all time! Blind adulation and lack of objectivity is not to be admired. But, if you like the film so much, watch it again and enjoy! I'm not a masochist.

    • @Otherladyinblack
      @Otherladyinblack 7 років тому +6

      Blind adulation? Lack of objetivity? Sorry? I am pretty sure most (if not all) the people involved in this film have been dead since a long time. So I can not see in which way I am adulating them. Besides, both Murnau both Conrad Veidt had some pretty slack movies in their resumés, but this is not the case at all! Lack of objetivity? In spite of your not liking this film, it has indeed a great historical value, because this is the very first Murnau's film that has reached our time (being considered lost the five previous).

      Thanks for your comments Donald Ackerman. Refreshing to see an old film getting a negative review. You obviously know your stuff too
