Terry Kath played guitar like Jimi and sang like Ray Charles. He was one if the best if not the best and very under appreciated. RIP Terry.

What you're listening to is the REAL Chicago. Formed in 1967-68 and with Terry Kath on guitar until his accidental death in 1978, they fused together jazz, rock, blues, R&B into what you here in this song. Three principal vocalists were Terry Kath on this track, Peter Cetera (bass player) on "25 or 6 To 4" and Robert Lamm (keyboard player) on songs like "Beginnings" and "Saturday In The Park". After Kath's death, Peter Cetera and David Foster took the band into the soft ballad direction.
Terry Kath's voice was described by Lamm as "The white Ray Charles". You'll hear Kath singing on "Introduction", "Colour My World", and "Byblos" (my favorite on Chicago VII) among other tracks.

In 1976 I saw Chicago at an outdoor festival in Nuremberg, Germany. There were over 100,000 people there. They were so good that the crowd brought them back for five encores. On the last encore they said they didn't have any more Chicago songs to do so they did "Got to Get You Into My Life" by the Beatles. I almost died it was so good. Fast forward to 2018. I had a VIP Meet and Greet pass to Chicago in Austin, Texas. I showed them pictures that I took at the Nuremberg concert. I made Chicago smile.

Terry Kath was the soul of Chicago. Peter Cetera was a fantastic voice. Terry was a fantastic guitarist. Jimi Hendrix admired him and said more than once that Terry was as good as him or better. Sadly he died of a gun accident. Chicago changed without Terry. Went from Rockin' bluesy to Soft rock vocal band. Terry did sing like Ray Charles. I liked the old Chicago better. Still liked them but it was a different band. Thanks Harri.

They did not change their vocalist, they had 3 main singers. It wasn’t until the late 70’s and 80’s that Peter Cetera became the de facto lead singer due to his popularity. This is Terry Kath, he died tragically at 32 years old. You can hear Peter and Robert Lamm in the background.

  • @buukkreider544

Chicago had 3 main vocalists from the original 7. Terry Kath is the voice that you're hearing. Terry was the lead guitarist - and Jimi Hendrix spoke highly of the man. Sadly, in 1978 Terry Kath put a revolver to his head, thinking it was empty, but when he clicked it... he was only 31 years old. I hope you would do a reaction to 'Leonid and Friends' - their version of this song is INCREDIBLE! This was 1970. They are still active today. They've replaced individuals over the time. They actually have 37 albums as of this writing (11/07/2023).

Harri, I enjoyed this, and your reaction, but, I agree with the other commenters below named P T P that you should re-do this video where you have the song fed directly and not via your mic picking it up from another source - then your listeners will really appreciate it more. Also: you cut it off before the song fully ended - that's one of the best parts of the song!! It builds to a crescendo and that's where you get all the chills down your spine! :) But we forgive you.
However, back to your reaction - I so appreciate what you said and was thrilled to witness your surprise & delight at how good & funky the band was back from 1970 vs. the sound you're used to with them in the '80s. Harri, yes, you are absolutely right: they became a completely different band in the '80s - I mean night & day.
Their original three singers were Terry Kath, who does the vocal here, Robert Lamm, who has a similar baritone voice although a tad more smooth, and Peter Cetera, who handles all the tenor singing, all the high stuff. Late in the '70s, the producer David Foster, who, I will admit, is an extremely talented guy and wrote for Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Earth, Wind & Fire, among many, many others, saw an opening for Chicago in using Cetera as lead vocalist exclusively and combining it with his, that is, Foster's, style of songwriting which is - and you'll have to forgive me and some people reading this are gonna hate on me - sappy ballads, at least in terms of his Chicago tunes. So it always just amazes me when young people as yourself simply aren't familiar with the earlier stuff and then get blown away when they hear all this great funky, soulful (blue-eyed soul?) tracks like "Make Me Smile."
Unfortunately, Terry died in 1978, Cetera went on to have his own solo career, drummer Danny Seraphine was fired by the band in the '90s over disagreements, and saxophonist Walt Parazaider, still officially with the band, but no longer tours due to illness. So the three remaining members, Robert Lamm, their keyboardist, one of their main songwriters and, as I mentioned earlier, one of their original three vocalists, is still out on the road with two of their original horn players, trombonist James Pankow and trumpet player Lee Loughnane. Those original three members, with several new replacement musicians (actually, some of whom have been with them for a couple of decades now), happen to be touring the US right now, Summer 2021! The reason I'm telling you all this is because their concerts now concentrate mainly on their earlier career from 1969-1978 (roughly). They had 8 huge hits in the '80s of those ballads you're so familiar with BUT, at least on this tour from what I've read, they only do half of them. So the emphasis is not on that period, it's on their earlier career. I have no doubt that a few folks coming to the shows are a little disappointed because they wanted all 8 to be sung - but many fans of their earlier career, like me, absolutely LOVE it!
Anyway, I think you should re-do this video with the full sound and let it play through - there will be plenty to re-react to! lol ALSO, fyi, "Make Me Smile" was actually extrapolated from a much larger work, 12+ minutes in length, that was written by the aforementioned James Pankow - yes, their trombonist, who is also a very accomplished songwriter and wrote many of their hits - called "Ballet For The Girl In Buchannon," and it also happens to contain yet ANOTHER hit that was extrapolated from it, called "Colour My World," a much slower song, which is also sung by Terry Kath and is equally amazing. The record company felt they couldn't release the entire 12 minutes as a single but saw the potential for two of the songs within it to become singles and they were right as they were massive hits. I wouldn't do "Ballet" as a reaction video but you need, in your own time, to listen to it - you will be BLOWN AWAY!!! Actually, that is part of their set on their current concert tour.
ALSO: I saw that you did a video of one of their other songs, "25 Or 6 To 4," but no other Chicago tunes. Harri, you MUST do a few more Chicago tunes! Robert Lamm wrote "25 Or 6 To 4" and I would recommend you do two of his other real big hits, "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is" and "Beginnings," both which also feature Robert doing the lead vocal, and I think you're gonna love his voice. ("25 Or 6 To 4," indeed, he gave that vocal to Cetera.) I would also recommend the softer but gorgeous "Wishing You Were Here," which both Terry and Cetera do lead vocals on and features backing vocals by, believe it or not, The Beach Boys, and "Alive Again," a big feel-good tune, which was their first hit after Terry died, with Cetera doing, imho, his best vocal since "25 Or 6 To 4."
Anyway, thanks for doing this video, Harri - I appreciate it very much and, again, your reaction is priceless!

@@kenratliff7822 Thanks, Ken,. appreciate that! Re-reading my comments now, I may have gone on just a wee bit longer than I should have in a comment section on UA-cam - but that's my passion for Chicago.
And, oh, yes, Leonid & Friends - VERY familiar with them, incredible!, and saw them in San Francisco a couple of years ago AND seeing them again end November when they return to our city. My only disappointment is that Sergey Kashirin left the band and he was my favorite, and the fellow who is his replacement covers those Lamm vocals as if he were performing in a musical or opera. Lacking soul, spontaneity, relaxed open phrasing. But glad you said the show was good!

Harri: there are 2 Chicagos. One before the death of their lead guitarist, vocalist, arranger and heart & soul of the band TERRY KATH. Before his death, Chicago played a hard driving energetic blend of rock with heavy jazz influences, and an enormously big sound. Then post Kath the band never even tried to replace him, then set off in a completely different direction (soft rock ballads) where they still had success, but lost a large part of their constituency, when they lost all their power and "edge". Search out all Chicago recordings in which Kath was a member, versus recordings after his demise. The difference is startling (from my perspective, startlingly boring) fortunately for you, there's a pretty good catalogue of songs of which Kath is a major part.

Terry Kath Was the guitar player & singer on Make Me Smile & was often called the "White" Ray Charles. Sadly when Terry Kath died from a gun accident in the mid 70's Chicago lost their mojo !! That's when started the "soft" stuff your talking about. Their first album in 69' they went by "Chicago Transit Authority" which also is a fantastic album. Starting with their 2nd album release they shortened it to "Chicago." When you check out their first release you have to check out track #1 on the Chicago Transit Authority LP called "Introduction" That one track will take you thru EVERYTHING Chicago was back in the beginning .. Rock, Funk, R&B, Jazz !! ALL in one incredible track Also on that LP is another great track .. I'm A Man" !! ENJOY !! After the loss of Terry Kath it was a completely different band. So much to hear from early Chicago .. 25 or 6 to 4, I Just Want To Be Free, Color My World, Beginnings, & so much more !!

They didn't have a single singer, they had multiple ones ... that is, as I mentioned before in my other comment, after Terry Kath (the lead singer in this song) died (January 1978). Then they sort of went all on with Peter Cetera (the bass player) as the (pretty much) sole lead singer. I never really like them much after that.

Chicago was SO GOOD when Terry Kath was alive. They changed lead vocalists a lot. You probably know mostly Peter Cetera - the bassist - as he did most of the later vocals. Also a great voice, but very melodic rather than this.

Chicago went soft in the 80s-the BEST Chicago is the early stuff!! This is the way most people back in the day know Chicago when they started out-mainly a jazz rock horn band-then they wimped out in the 80s it was shocking as they dropped the horns-thankfully they've reverted back.Check out Beginnings-theirs a live video at Tanglewood I believe.

Bit of a shame you didn't get to hear the whole of this side of the Chicago ll album. Make Me Smile is the first of a continuous suite of seven tracks under the umbrella title of Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon. The version you heard is the first track, which melts into the second - but the side ends with a short reprise of Make Me Smile, and for the track you heard, the two parts have been edited together into a single song. But try to get to hear the whole suite of songs (which really need to include somewhere the first track on side three, Fancy Colours, before the reprise, in my mind). I'm sure the suite was edited/rearranged for timing purposes. Ballet... is an unexpected masterpiece, which compares very favourably with the side two medley on The Beatles' Abbey Road.

They called themselves a rock and roll band with horns. I saw them live a few times in the 70s. They weren't the same after the death of Terry Kath, the lead guitarist who sings lead on this one. Still good, but not as much heart. Check out their cover of I'm a Man (Spencer Davis Group), and Colour My World for more Terry as lead singer. Since you were wondering, he was white.
