Thank you for pointing out how good the bass line is. Most people don't want to acknowledge how good Cetera was on bass because they resent him for what Chicago did in the 80s, but his bass playing shouldn't be ignored. Their cover of I'm a Man from this same performance is great and gives each vocalist, and the drummer Danny Seraphine, a chance to shine.
You're correct about Cetera's chops on the bass. He gets a lot of grief for the group's change of musical direction, but in reality he became the musical force in the group by default. Terry Kath's accidental gunshot death was followed closely by Robert Lamm's rehab for substance abuse, which left Cetera as the only lead vocalist and primary songwriter.
Peter Cetera and Paul McCartney are my two favorite rock bassists. I totally agree with you, Cetera's basslines were killer, and it's a shame he's not given the due he deserves.
Completely agree. 67-79 wowed every song and then the 80’s less Terry. 😢 I liked Certera’s voice and Bass playing during the Kath era but TOO MANY 80’s SAPPY, well you know
Don't blame Peter for the 80's that was the record executives that did that and not having Terry
@@tgforty5 Sorry you are Mistaken Chris Squire and Geddy Lee and there is many more..
The guitar solo in this performance is beyond beyond.
Word! And you can feel from the moment he touches his pick to the string that you're on your way through an intergalactic roundtrip.
OMG, one of the greatest guitar solos in the history of rock music. People have said that Chicago lost its soul when Terry Kath died. I agree. He was a very special musician.
I've seen Terry play 8 times. I wholeheartedly agree.
I love this song and the guitar solo by Terry Kath is awesome. Hard to imagine bass player Peter Cetera sang a few years later their hit song If You Leave Me Now.
One of the best guitars solos ever! This is my favorite live songs ever! RIP Terry Kath so awesome!! ❤️❤️❤️
Hendrix said Terry Kath was best he's ever seen.
Terry Kath was the best I've ever seen! 🤩
Great observation about the bass. But don't forget the driving rhythms of Danny Seraphine, In jazz we call the three the rhythm section or the engine room. Such explosive, organized energy. This band had it all.
Great request, and wonderful reaction Harri. Regarding lead guitarist Terry Kath, it's widely reported that a concert-goer once described him as "the greatest guitarist in the universe.". The name of that concert attendee: JIMI HENDRIX. 😎
Hear the exact quote from James Pankow himself. ua-cam.com/video/x_A88tvQHqI/v-deo.html
Certainly the finest guitar solo ever filmed. This is the guy Hendrix said was better than he was (of course, Hendrix was notoriously humble about his own genius). I thought Blood Sweat and Tears might have been mentioned for horn sections. Theirs was awesome. Kath's death changed the band.
This performance is just amazing.
Excellent pick ! Great version! Have always loved CTA (or "Chicago")! A favorite is "Wishing You Were Here," because of the story behind the song. The Beach Boys: Al Jardine, Carl Wilson, and Dennis Wilson were next door to where they were recording the song. They stuck their heads in the door and told them how much they loved their music, and jokingly said they'd love to contribute some harmony if they wanted, and sure enough, they're listed as "vocals" on the track ! Love stories behind songs. ✌💎🎶🎸
I don't know if this is their "best moment" but this entire live show is one helluva performance that's for sure. Thanks Harry! 🤘
Im a man is another great from this but as you said every number is fantastic
@@robertkern9911 The only cover that Chicago ever did
This is a ridiculously great version of a great song by an amazing guitarist, Terry Kath RIP.
Robert Lamm wrote the song. Its a time on the clock
In 1970 I was 16, listening to pirate radio on a dark night in my Irish country home when this song came on by a band I'd never heard of. I remember bolting upright when the brass kicked in. Thanks for the memory guys.
The guitar warm-up alone was good!
Terry Kath didn't play the guitar, he beat it into submission and told it what it was going to do.
From the 1970 album, " Chicago", this great tune was written by keyboardist and singer Robert Lamm. He was living in the Hollywood Hills where he had a view of the whole city, 24 hours a day and where these famous lines were written.
This song is an absolute showcase for the horn section, the guitars absolutely blazing and Peter Cetera's vocals are excellent. The Live performance is absolutely amazing with such an enjoyable start. Not a Chicago song exists that isn't an absolutely amazing performance and thrill to listen to endlessly.Timeless perfection. 🎷🎷🎸🎸🎺🎺Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Steve. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Flashback to my Brothers garage band working out these rifts.....
Incredibly talented group of musicians! They totally killed it!
Terry Kath was an absolute Beast of a Guitarist! In fact the entire Band is a Super Group.
Terry Kath was an amazing guitarist, R. I.P. and Peter Cetera is one of the great voices of rock. Instantly recognizable. When I moved down to Southern California, the very first concert I went to was at an amphitheater, and it was Chicago rand The Beach Boys. You talk about the perfect welcoming to SoCal. Excellent choice Harri. I enjoy your style, and I am subbed up. Clint brought me here. It’s one of my favorite songs, but Harri, millions of brides and grooms had their first dance to Colour My World. I think as far as sales, or requests go, it may be their greatest.
The late great Terry Kath was Jimi Hendrix’s favorite guitarist. He was definitely the leader of the band. When he passed away the band was never as good. It took 3 guitarists to ATTEMPT to replace him.
Terry Kath on the guitar! Jimi Hendrix spoke highly of the man!
Jimi Hendrix thought Terry Kath was much better than him!!
Yes, it beats the studio version. This was the magic of Chicago with their original “cast”! RIP Terry!
Anything from live in Tanglewood is amazing. Rest In Peace Terry Kath.
Listen to the last two words out of Peter Cetera's mouth on this song. "TERRY KATH"
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was nothing short of a celebration of the life of Terry Kath. Such a senseless waste.
But I'm gonna let my Boomer out here. This was the golden era of rock. When an artist has spent years honing their craft, giving us reason to move our bodies to their music. Not pre-recorded bits of drum machine and autotune created on a laptop but raw talent on display. And you are right, Peter's bass work is in and of itself worthy of praise. Being a lifelong musician, I can attest to the talent it takes to lay down a bass clef line and sing in treble clef. He did amazing work.
RIP Terry Kath. One of the greatest guitarists in history...
Classic. TERRY KATH ON GUITAR
I remember when Chcago and Earth Wind and Fire added horns. ❤ Great 70s music
Terry Kath was a GREAT guitarist, highly underrated and often forgotten. I mean how good is he, the whole horn section was watching him play. He doesn't even have to look at his hands, he just knows how to play.
I don't normally like live versions but this one this one is the one! Terry Kath was a beast gone too soon 😢
Why doesn't Terry Kath get more recognition? Jimi Hendrix called him the best guitarist on the planet!
Great reaction Harri. Good call on the headphones. I’ve seen this lots of times, but I put on my headphones to watch it again and it really brings Cetera’s bass front and center. RIDICULOUS like the man said. This is one song I can never get enough of.
Guitarist Terry Kath was much admired by Jimi Hendrix. Kath also left us much too soon (in 1978 at age 31) through carelessness. Early on many listeners thought the title was some kind of coded drug reference ... rather than a time reference.
That, my friends, is how you play guitar. Pick one one up today, and you can play, too
As a teenager in the late 80s, I HATED THIS BAND! Then I heard Sunday in the Park and this tune... I was like, what the hell went wrong...
That guitarist is just kicking major ass
😊😊😊😊😊
When you paused it before the guitar solo I almost laughed and said to myself this guy doesn't know what the hell is about to hit him!
Absolutely!
@dougbodenhamer9391 I'm blown away every time I watch that performance, and I've watched it a million times!
@@magneto7930 right there with ya brother
Thumbs up to the drummer, too. For just keeping up…… RIP,Terry Kath. If you notice some of the movements of Terry Kath playing were copied by the great Stevie Ray Vaughan….
If anybody is curious why the strange start, Danny (the drummer) either bent or cracked his ride cymbal and had to swap it out. The cymbal stand wouldn't lie flat on the floor, and he needed help to secure it properly. Terry (on guitar) simply cannot be on stage with his guitar plugged in...and not play. So he decided to improv until the repairs were made. That makes me love this version that much more.
I saw them live in 1971. Song still one of my favorites. And omg what a great band live!
Virtually lost to time is the meaning of this song: take another dose of LSD-25 or sleep 6am to 4pm
It has been produced to a degree, but even so, the raw power is exactly that raw and powerful. And, the lyrics……
Terry Kath was so good Hendricks was a fan
Jimi Hendrix saw Terry Kath play and said “that MF IS BETTER THAN ME”😊 not hearsay told by a guy who was with Hendrix and James Pankow of Chicago!😊. Oh yea this solo was all ad lib.
Terry Katy’s death was so tragic. I wonder where music would be had he not had that accident? Still hard to believe.
Early Chicago were incredible, funky, soulful, and hip!
Their horn section ridiculous!😎😎🎼🎶🎵🎶
Terry Kath was such a fantastic guitarist, so sad he’s gone.
The older Chicago (such as this) are better than the newer songs in my opinion. I do think the studio version is cleaner of course.
Cleaner, but Terry's solo is crazy fire here.
I understand that some people love Chicago in a certain era but I grew up and love all their stuff from CTA, Hotstreets, 17, 18, 21,etc.
The Kath years were my favorite!
Of course, no human replaces this man.
I agree on ALL accounts.
They later became too popish with those mushy love songs.
The entire Tanglewood concert is worth reviewing. The original 7 members of Chicago were one of, if mot THE tightest ensembles ever constructed to make music.
Brass Construction, Tower of Power, Earth, Wind and Fire, Mandrill just to name a few!
@@samuelgates5935 none of which had the song writing talent of Robert Lamm, the arrangement prowess of a James Pankow, the vocal brilliance of a Peter Cetera, the lead guitar chops of a Terry Kath or the barely contained lunacy of Danny Serafin on drums. Add in Lamm and Kath's ability to sing lead and you have the versatility of Three Dog Night with the musicianship of Julliard quality instrumentation.
This Grandpa loves this song! Many great memories from 1970!!
The guitarist is Terry Kath. They had a lot of great songs from this era. They had a unique and soulful sound. I love this one, and I also love Beginnings. Don't particularly like the second iteration of the band.
Jimi Hendrix once called Terry Kath one of the greatest guitarists. He had also at one point wanted to record an album with them.
Do a react to the entire Ballet For A Girl In Buchanon - it was the entirety of Side 2 on the LP version. Now THAT is their finest moment.
I love how Terry Kath was not having this drum issue sht. He just started the song and basically told the drummer and tech to get onboard or don't. We're going. NOW.
There aren’t many bands that are great live, CTA was one of them.
I love how Terry Kath actually seems to conduct the band with his guitar 🎸 and seems psychically connected to their drummer. Cetera is a great bassist.
Try sometime "in the country" same album. You get both Terry Kath, the guitarist, and the Peter Cetera trading vocals with each other and the band doing amazing things.
25 or 6 to 4 is a question. It is about a guy alone, in his room, with writers block--and is so tired he can't read the clock....likely a dial clock back then. So the question is, what time is it? 25 or 6 to 4? (AM)
I believe that nobody could have practiced that guitar attack/run. He had to have had an out of body experience. This is when you no longer can try to play. You just play without thinking. No one can think that fast.
That’s the legend Terry Kath when he died the band went down for a little awhile but made a comeback on the Chicago 16 he’s one of the greatest guitarist of all time Jimmy Hendrix was hugh fan of Terry
I feel this is one of the best guitar solos of all time. Terry Kath is like a man possessed by the guitar gods. Great request Mr. Baldwin 👍🙃
. 🙃👍🇨🇦🇺🇸🇬🇧🤴
🥰🤩😍 DKGBCAUS
You are correct Sir. One of the most memorable great performances ever. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦❤️🇺🇲🎶
Amen!
Agreed! The bass is filthy!!
Greastest, thank you Harri :)
Well I can tell you that just before Covid I saw Chicago in concert and they sounded just as good or maybe better than they did in the 70s. They were amazing and played to a sold out audience. One of the best concerts I’ve attended, absolutely fantastic. Thank you Steve for requesting Harri to react to this and great reaction Harri. Cheers from Canada. 👏👏👏🇨🇦
I saw them in 2017 and they were Incredible
What a great show
I agree they sound better live than studio tracks.
They needed another song quickly for the session they were doing so this is a song about trying to write a song. He was up all night and when looked across the room at the clock on the wall (not digital) it was about 25 or 26 minutes til 4.
The beginning was fill because the drummer had knocked over some of his equipment on the song before. You can see them fixing it.
That horn section is 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥
Oh Yeah, just a "bad-ass" track. I just came across your "reaction" video. Just learned that term a week ago, but you know what? I love enjoying it with you and your fans!!! I have been listening to this song for decades, as I'm almost over the hill now. Bless Up xoxo
No one else sounds like Chicago! Very few have ever tried to cover their music! You always know it's Chicago! The horns are the best and Chicago is one of the only Rock group to incorporate them! RIP Terry! Still have all my original Chicago vinyl! Well, I still have all my vinyl!
Terry kath=LEGEND
I was at this concert (Tanglewood, Summer of 1970)... And how about this?... That same summer ON THAT SAME STAGE, Santana and The Who ALSO performed (three separate concerts). It was an amazing summer of music for us (I was a freshman in college at the University of Massachusetts, not far from Tanglewood)... Terry Kath, Pete Townshend, Santana... Sorry folks, you're going to have to agree that we were blessed to see - AND HEAR - three stunning and accomplished guitarists. All within just a few weeks of each other... It was incredible...
Horns, harmony and all that hair equals HEAT!
That’s a bad mutha on guitar
I think you'd be just as impressed with 'Make Me Smile', both the studio and live versions. They were a truly phenomenal band back then. Terry Kath was one of the best rock guitarists ever.
Their best song by far!! Terry Kath was a beast on guitar RIP
Chicago’s best song is “Questions 67 & 68”. Epic song and musicianship.
Great choice Steve and great reaction Harri. One of my favorite videos. The guitarist is Terry Kath. Supposedly Jimi Hendrix once responded to the question what is it like to be the best guitarist in the world with the response I don’t know, go ask Terry Kath. Terry died young of a gunshot wound in 1978. We may have heard more music of this caliber if he had lived longer. RIP Terry
it's debatable on the urban legend. Some said he conveyed Terry or Rory Gallagher. Some even said his favorite was Billy Gibbons. So, who knows?
"music of this caliber". Snort. I assume that was unintentional, given how Kath died.
Cetera is a world class bass player. His bass chops are as good as his unmistakable voice. A monster group in the early 70s
Saw them in college about this era. Walked into the concert absolutely straight and left high as a kite from the sonics! Thanks!
Jimi Hendrix once said to Bob Lamm..."I love your band. Your guitar player is better than me and your horn section sounds like they have one lung". Terry Kath was brilliant and thank God I got to see them play live back in the day.
Early Chicago masterpiece.
That was the Rule , rather than the exception when guitarist Terry Kath was still alive .
I put this in the discussion with Queen at Live Aid as best live performance.
One of the greatest guitar solos of all time, I never get tired of listening to it!
The way I heard it. a reporter asked Jimi Hendrix what it felt like to be the Worlds Best Guitarist. His response was, "You have to ask that guy from Chicago..."
Dick Cavett asked Jimi "who is the best guitarist ever?" He replied, " The one sitting in this seat."
Mind blowing!
This is much better than the studio version. Wow
I'd have to say I have a newfound respect for the guitar
I love live versions because the gloves come off.
The rawness explodes and the begining part when the drummer had issues with his ride symbol stand makes it honest, I had similar issues with my kits over the years, but drums are very mechanical instruments and usually get the crap smacked out of them.
Love ya dude, keep on rockin'.
✌️♥️🇬🇧
The day the music died. When Terry Kath accidently shot himself. Chicago was still a great band but they lost a big part of their soulful identity. Terry had a great gritty voice. I love his vocals on Make me Smile😢
Devasting Day Daniel. So senseless. 😢😢
Hi Harry another Great Song from Chicago is "Make Me Smile" also sang by Guitarist Terry Kath
I grew up in Chicago and loved these guys, I wore out the albums
Jimi Hendrix’s favorite guitarist was Terry Kath.❤️🔥
Leave it to the drummer to hold up the show. I wouldn't know a thing about that. 😀 Great performance. Really enjoyed it. Kudos Steve and Harri. A great find and I had not seen it before either.👍👍👍
I treasure this video, Terry is a beast!! 💞
You are so right about that bass line running through the air, thanks for that!
You mentioned some great music acts that feature horns. You might check out Blood, Sweat and Tears. Great horn band from the same era as Chicago. I hope you enjoy them.
Jimmy Hendrick's two favorite guitar players were Billy Gibbons and Terry Kath. Nough said
I'm from Chicago and still live here in the suburbs. I grew up in the same Dunning neighborhood as Danny Seraphine the drummer around the same time (he is 6 years older). I saw them in the early 70's with Terry Kath and Peter Cetera at the Chicago Stadium and again without both of them in 1992 on a twin bill with The Moody Blues at a suburban outdoor venue. Both were great concerts.
RIP Terry Kath. My favourite Chicago songs definitely include this one. My other faves are:
Feelin' Stronger Every Day
Old Days
Another Rainy Day in New York City
Enjoyed your reaction Harri.
You're killing it Harri.
Love your channel.
