  • Carlos Ruiz’s part in Blind’s 2005 release What If, still stands as one of the most controversial skate parts to be included in a major brand’s full-length video. The young and humble skater from Carson, CA didn’t have amateur or pro status, but was going bigger and harder than most pros at the time, laying down a perfect backlip down El Toro and a clean switch 50-50 down a massive hubba first try. His part unleashed equal amounts of love and hate, spurring an onslaught of debates from UA-cam trolls and pros alike on style vs. "carcass hucking" tricks and doing similar tricks on self proclaimed spots.
But after the release of What If, where did he go? No new parts, no sponsorships, nothing. After ten years of silence Carlos Ruiz puts the rumors to sleep and addresses the hate that ensued after the part dropped, in Havoc TV’s new skate doc, REDEFINED, featuring first-hand accounts and exclusive interviews with Carlos Ruiz, Antwuan Dixon, Bill Weiss, James Craig, Knox Godoy, Dennis Martin, and more.

It’s funny I can barely recall a single trick Tim O’Connor has done - I remember the alien/habitat video parts coming out and being good, but a never a “holy shit” reaction. Not saying he needed to throw himself down El Toro like Carlos, but I REMEMBER that What If part dropping and shocking everybody. Carlos was sick af, no disputing it.

Tim O's biggest achievement in skating was probably kickflipping the love park fountain gap, which Kerry Getz did first.

This is inspiration. I didn't know he was working full time while making his video part. Major respect to this guy as this will never be forgotten. I just cannot believe the amount of negativity for such an epic part. If you see this comment Carlos or any one else from watching this video. Thank you for setting the bar so high when What If? debuted out in 2005. You are a legend, and blessed you are living a well deserved happy life.

at the time i started skating "what if" came out and i loved carlos part just as any other part in it. i didn't know a lot of skateboarding back then and i also didn't care about which trick has been done at a spot. Even on the contrary i was a little disappointed everyone has his own way to do a trick and i thought it'd be interesting to see the different versions of it at the same spot. Whatever Carlos Ruiz part was dope and all the hate that he received was from people who probably couldn't backlip a flatbar or from others that could but have a sick/narrow ideology what skateboarding should be.

Kids in my town didn't talk shit about his part. There's absolutely no way Heath would be mad that somebody did a new trick on a spot he skated. Skateboarders don't own spots. We're full grown adults playing with toys for fun. If Heath was mad then he's a baby but I just don't see that being the case. Glad this guy was smart enough to realize that killing yourself for McDonald's wage and E list celebrity status isn't worth it. Interviewer: There's an interesting trend with you finding spots and getting the first trick there, then it becomes the hot spot to skate afterwards. What's your take on that? Does it piss you off?
Heath: I'm a lot more laid back now about it, but there were certain people that I really hated when they did it. There's kind of an etiquette in skateboarding. The thing I always reference is Geoff Rowley with Staples Center--it's Geoff Rowley's Staples Center, and people go there to prove themselves against Geoff Rowley. To me it's like, okay so you're only going there to prove yourself against one of the greatest skaters, that's why you're doing it down that.
El Toro is something different, El Toro was just a great rail that was right in the heart of skateboarding. Of course it was going to blow up and be a big spot.
I'm kind of talking in circles, but mainly I hated the amateurs coming after me. I had this one kid that went to like three of my spots and completely took me apart at them--he backlipped El Toro, he switch grinded this hubba that I regular grinded. Nutty, nutty sh-t, and I was like, this guy is after me. And there was another kid that I was really harsh about, he rode for Adio or something.
      Interviewer:
Where are those kids now, though?
Heath: They're not here, but when you're in it and heated and you're really passionate, it's hard seeing that it's just skating and it doesn't matter what these other people are doing. I've always been really protective of what I'm doing. Looking back I kind of regret how I've acted, basically.

So sick to me it’s almost more respectful he came in dominated and moved on and new what he wanted out of life after our skateboard prime . Similar to Jereme Rogers he knew what he wanted to do and is doing it . All professional athletes struggle with life after their prime either amateur or professional career, mentally it can take even the most well rounded person and spit them out. I think guys like Carlos see this some how before hand. He didn’t let life make the decisions for him through trials and tribulations he manhandle it. Great Video !!! Just heard Carlos name on the nine club December 2020 and had to re check out the part that I had watched years ago when I was in my prime and it’s inspiring , Carlos amazing proper tricks that still send shock waves through the industry!

Awesome piece, Ruiz has a great attitude and this was a great story told very well. It's a bummer to think what could have been if he'd gotten the backing he deserved, the raw approach and shutting out the hate reminds me of Thomas' journey and work ethic, and look where it got him. But Ruiz clearly hasn't let the outcome get him down, he only draws positivity and confidence from what skateboarding gave him, and the humility he shows about the opportunities he got is definitely inspiring to see.
Keeping the small candid moments in here was a great choice, too, random interruptions and asides gave this a great sense of authenticity. It is sad to see Antwuan drinking again, that man's talent and style are incredible, and I hate to see it compromised.
As a devoted Kirchart disciple I would have liked to see him in here somewhere, since the controversy loomed over Ruiz's career significantly. I was half expecting Heath to walk into the interview on the stairs when Ruiz said he's never met him, then do a surprise high-5 and hug deal. I bet they asked him to be in this but declined, so it goes, and no one, much less me, is in any place to question anything that man does (maybe the cops, on occasion).
All in all great work HavocTV, keep it up!

This guy should be an inspiration to everybody, because if he could land those tricks then so can alot of us, even when his part came out I could tell he had alot less control and experience on a skateboard than me, I could have back fifitied that skatepark hubba first try back then and definitely wouldn't have accidently ollied over the entire rail trying a back lip, and I've had 17 more years on the board since then so technically I would probably land those tricks first try if I commited as hard as Carlos, Which there's no fucking way in hell I ever will.
The gap between what he should have been able to do and what he did will never be matched and should be studied by scientists.

Like with all things...life and reality eventually get in the way and you have to grow up. Sucks. Even with all the work he was putting in its somewhat surprising to see that those companies weren't breaking any real bread for this man to survive on and continue to develop his craft. If only boxes of product paid the bills right. That sucks too that not one of those companies he was riding for thought to maybe help him with a job but hey I'm sure he's making decent money at the refinery. I'm sure it's not what he wanted to do but at least he was mature enough to know he needed to handle biz and that's because he knew what it was to struggle from his mom kinda leaving him to fend for himself. That's f*cked up too. Crazy story, I enjoyed this.

Not comparing myself to this kids talent, but I have done that one where I stuck on a surface and flew the stairs and I cracked two ribs and was walking around stooped over for two weeks, If I tried to sit up straight it felt like someone took a blow torch to my back. People are de-sensitised to pain thesedays from watching so much skating. When you take slams like that it's no joke, you can't just go back and skate the next day. Well maybe some pros can almost do that but to most mere mortals... oh and mine was on a set half the height but straight down on my ribs side-on. I remember while in the air thinking this is gonna hurt, lol. Skating is tough and you find out how tough you do it long enough. With that in mind it's hard to fathom how tough this kid was, flash in the pan or not, he took gnarly slam after slam.

Wow. I always wondered what happened to this dude. I have to say when What If came out I was a huge Heath fan and still am. can't lie I hated on this kid hard when his part came out. Glad to see the dude is happy and healthy these days.

Much respect, for both going hard as fuck and making a tough choice to get off the 'pro skater' merry-go-round ride and focus on work.
