I have a very bookish group of friends, and when one of them moved to New York, the rest of us visited her and built our trips around going to as many independent book stores as possible (like The Strand, Books Are Magic, The Mysterious Bookshop, Greenlight Bookstore, etc). However, she recently moved to Portland, so OBVIOUSLY a trip is being planned to get us all to Powell's, lol. We also planned to have a Shakespeare book club since we've all read different plays, but that's been slow to get off the ground. The only other big bookish goal of mine is to go on a literary tour of the UK to see places relevant to Jane Austen, Beatrix Potter, Dracula, and Agatha Christie.
My husband & I became naturalists & birders in recent years. We were not outdoor people in the past AT ALL and we've been together 22 years. We live in SW Florida so being outside can be, in a word, punishing. But the natural world has helped us get outside OF OURSELVES (especially during height of pandemic times & stressful events) so we committed to rising early enough in the morning, doing our walks & photography and getting home at a decent enough hour (11:30am, 12pm-ish) so we're not too exposed for too long. The bonus is this: since we get home early enough, we have a LOT of time to edit our photos, read, and do any number of other things we enjoy. .....ALL THIS TO SAY: Your nature non-fic picks have inspired & enriched us as we've gone on this journey. H is for Hawk was my first pick (from you, of course!) and it spurred me on to The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating, then The Soul of an Octopus and more. I thoroughly enjoyed the Ravenmaster book and recommend it especially to people who haven't "discovered" birds yet but want something lighter (even with all the dark bits) as it's extremely accessible. I loved & ached while reading Margaret Renkl's Late Migrations, was totally immersed in Winter Pasture by Li Juan, and countless others have also made an impact - all for the better.
Nature non-fic has come a long way and I THANK YOU for bringing that to light. In decades past it was often dry, bland - wholly academic. Not anymore! I especially love the nature-meets-memoir subgenre; I find it affecting, full of empathy & wisdom. So, once again, Thank You, Olive.

Years ago, I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The author then came to Santa Fe, NM and listened to his talk and had him sign my book. Next up was a trip to Savanah, Georgia where the book takes place. We went to places mentioned in the book. I absolutely loved it!!
I also read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society before visiting Guernsey on a cruise. So interesting to see the places mentioned in the book.
I don't remember reading ANY classics and I'm 65! I have a lot of catching up to do.
When you take your bookish trips, please make that a series ❤ reading the book, pre-planning the trip, etc. That'd be fun.
I think many people would enjoy a “deep dive” book club as it would lead to a really great discussion. Just make sure people know what they are getting into so they join for the right reasons.

I had never been in a book club until I was 51 when a neighbor suggested we start one for our neighborhood. For me, there have been more misses than hits. And some months I don’t even bother. But I am happy to finally be in one. Also, I love the idea of literary travel. It makes me think of Helene Hanaff’s quest to see London which I loved reading about in her sequel to 84 Charing Cross Road called The Duchess of Bloomsberry Street. Side note, Helene also wrote a fantastic book for tourist on NYC called Apple of My Eye. Another great video Olive. Thank you!

I just finished Better Living Through Birding by Christian Cooper (from the infamous exchange with a dog owner in Central Park). This is right up your alley with the memoir/nature/BIRD combo. His passion for birding, which started when he was a very young boy, is contagious and could turn you into a birder! ☺️ I don’t generally gravitate toward memoirs but this really took me by surprise. I love the book club idea - can I be a lurker?? 🙈 Thanks for the video Olive! ❤️
My community does a Jane Austen ball every year, and I highly recommend one of these immersive events. I learned some very sedate dances ahead of time and had a blast. Also there is a whole language behind using a fan watching experts in action was so much fun!

Rereading books that we were not yet emotionally ready for can cast them in a whole new light when read as an adult.
Recently, I reread “A Red Badge of Courage” by Stephen Crane. I truly disliked it as an 8th grader. Many decades later I appreciated Crane’s beautifully descriptive prose. Also, Crane’s ability to convey to the reader the fear and terror of the young recruit in his first battle had more impact.
I have my students compare/contrast the Shakespeare with the movie adaptation - ie Hamlet vs The Lion King, The Taming of the Shrew vs 10 Things I Hate About You. That might be a fun channel series whenever you get to it.

Yes-I am on board with a book club! I haven't really thought too much about a bookish bucket list, but I do know that I want to read all of Willa Cather's novels and go visit her National Center in Nebraska.
I would take more than a day for Powells! They are divided into genre rooms and then further into subgeneres. So, depending on what you are interested in, you technically could spend a whole day in one genre/subgenre! Take a water bottle and a few snacks and just spend each day browsing and sampling and breathing in ☺
I love all you bookish longterm goals. I think I would love to go to a very large, but hole-in-the-wall type, used book shop that is not well known or frequented and while away a weekend with no pressure to be anywhere else.
Also - see if you can get a map of Powells before you go. It will help you to know each day where to go. Though, I got lost and didn't mind.
If I can convince my husband to go to Powell's twice in one trip, then I'll do just that!

Olive, I kind of love you and your channel. I'd join your book club for sure! Re Shakespeare, the problem with reading the original canon in order to 'get' all the references in later works, is that you have to read all the Greek myths too, and most of the Bible... Also, no, Wuthering Heights will not get better 😬I've tried it several times, telling myself the same thing, that maybe this time I'll like it. But I never do.
The great thing about knowing you, is that this list is something that will actually happen! This is no pie-in-the-sky stuff - if Olive plans it, it gets done! I'm excited for all of it.

The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts is amazing. I loved my visit and plan to do it again. Not a bad drive for me as I am in Southeastern MA. I am also on a reading project of all her work.
I started an in-person Goosebumps For Grownups book club and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s a group of 90s book fair kids who get the humor of what I’m doing, and also really awesome people who don’t identify as big readers who are enthusiastic about a low-stakes book club (and yes they count as readers, and double-yes their contributions are incredible). So absolutely start your own weird book club!

If you haven't already explored Oxford scholar Emma Smith for insights on Shakespeare plays, she is worth considering! I just finished a series of presentations on the printed Shakespeare folio/collection of plays (in preparation for the Frick exhibit on the folio) by her that was sponsored by Roundtable (formerly the 92nd Y?) - and it was wonderful!! She has a podcast (affiliated with Oxford) on Shakespeare that I'm definitely checking out after hearing her Roundtable discussions. Also, it is a stretch, but I wish I had explored attending the Oregon Shakespeare Festival when I was in Portland, OR this Summer. It is at the opposite end of the state but it would have been a worthwhile experience, I'm sure. I did go to Powell's, though, which was also on my "wish" list. Lastly, I would be interested in a non fiction book club as well and you would be an excellent moderator. Thank you!! - Diane
Yes, start a book club! I just started reading The Wager because of you and I’m enjoying it. As a person who generally reads fiction, it would be great to be part of a club that gets me reading more non-fiction.

Reading all of Shakespeare’s play is a big goal for me as well. I’m a theatre person and I’m ashamed how little I’ve read and seen. My spark was lit again when I worked on Twelfth Night at a local theatre 5 years back.
Definitely go to Powell’s City of Books (there are 3 Powell’s in Portland but City of Books is the “big one”)! Also visit Cannon Beach on the coast while you’re there, you won’t regret it.
I read Wuthering Heights as an adult, after reading many classics, & HATED it! Since you usually have similar tastes to me, I’m really interested in hearing your opinions on it when you read it a second time.
I would love for you to do a book club! Although I would be a person that doesn’t speak up as much, I love that you read older books (usually ones I can find at the library right away) & I always appreciate your honest thoughts on the books you read. ❤
Laudable goals. Best of luck on them. I am also trying to read all of Shakespeare's plays. I hope to have all of the plays read in the next three or four years. I have read 16 so far plus the sonnets, so I think I can read the rest in that time frame.
I only have one other ongoing reading project which is to read a book by an author from all countries in the UN. It's hard to decide what a "country" is for an around the world project so a UN membership is my criteria. I have read 128 so far and I have over 60 left to go. Eventually it gets hard to procure books for certain countries and I'll get there soon enough.
First, thanks for giving Wuthering Heights another chance! It has always been one of my favorites ... maybe because I was never forced to read it. Second, you have totally vindicated my problem with book clubs! I think about books in a way that seems to be different from the other book club participants. I always thought I was just weird! My bucket list includes creating book readers with people who have not been readers up to now. It's so gratifying to see my husband, after 43 years of marriage, reading his Kindle every day and asking for recommendations. Please include me in your nonfiction book club!
I'm 64 - I started reading Shakespeare with a discussion class 3 years ago. There's a lot to Shakespeare, including the conspiracy regarding who he really was. Do it! It's a broad and rich learning experience, and will take years - I'm only halfway through the first folio.... And how fun it would be to tour his settings.

I was on Jeopardy as a young Literature student in the UK back in the late 80s. There were zero Shakespeare questions, although i did answer an Audio Daily Double about the musical Hair.
I visit The Strand every time I go to New York, but these days I make it part of a lower Manhattan book trawl that also takes in the Housing Works bookshop, Rand McNally, the Mysterious Bookstore owned by Otto Pensler, and others. Powells is absolutely on my book bucket list if I ever make it to Portland.

@@abookolive I was a callow youth who loved trivia. They put me on the show because I was around 20 years younger than the other applicants. It was daytime TV. They were a little disappointed when I turned up to the recording clean-shaven wearing a suit. I was supposed to bring in the student audience!
In our version we didn't know what the other contestants scores were, so while I knew I was in front, I bet too conservatively on Final Jeopardy and the second place overtook me when we both got it right. Disaster! It haunts me still.
My tip is to go for it at all times. Trust yourself and always bet the maximum.

Powell's is a great book store! There's so much to do in the Portland area. I would be interested in a non-fiction book club! I have been in many book clubs but most don't want to read non-fiction. Also, a lot of book clubs I have been in really needed a better facilitator. It's not an easy task but it sounds like that would be right up your alley.
Omg yes please do videos on the Shakespeare goal! I'm a massive Shakespeare nerd, and have alllll the recommendations for retellings and different versions on DVD and all the things if you need/want any of those! ❤
A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare 1599 by James Shapiro is a truly 5 star read. It is worth reading any time but if you intend to do a deep dive into the plays, this is a way to orient the whole experience. This book can clear up a lot of confusion before it starts.
Not only is that a Baillie Gifford prize winner, but it was named "The Winner of Winners" earlier this year! I will absolutely be reading it 😁

I've been really wanting to lean more into non-fiction. I love nonfiction already but don't read as much of it as i'd like to.
Right now I am working on a 40 before 40 list I made on my 30th birthday. I'm 34 now (birthday was in February) and only have 15 books left on it to read. So i'm ahead of where I need to be to finish it in time lol.
Awhile ago I was thinking of what it means to be well-read and came to the conclusion that there is no destination to a well-read journey, and that no matter how much one reads and widely there will always be so so many more wonderful books out there so being well-read to me kinda feels like a lie now so I made what I called a "well read lie" list. It has over 600 books on it. I went through and wrote down all the genres, subgenres, age ranges, and diversity that I could think of and added books that I want to read for each thing. Several books for each thing. These are all books that I really do want to read. I already read all over the place in terms of all that anyway. So i've been chipping away at that.
My favorite book is Frankenstein, which i've now read 7 times. First time was in 2015. I reread it once a year, though i'd love to read it more often than that lol. I have yet to read anything else by Mary Shelley, and she has written a couple other books. So i'd love to read what else she has written and stuff her mother's written and her husband Percy. I've read biographies of Mary Shelley. I'm kind of obsessed lol so it's feels wrong that I haven't read more yet. Oh if I could one day be a Mary Shelley scholar of sorts, that would be awesome.

I have really fallen in love with Dickens' books, and am working on becoming an "unofficial scholar" too - basically I read a lot of his books, and then a lot of books about him and his books. And so fun, because unlike going to school for a degree, I get to study whatever I want.
Go into wuthering hights like it's reality TV. That really helped me. The drama, the betrail, the angry letters ... it still isn't my favorite classic, but I found it quit entertaining
Last year our local library started a non-fiction book club. The first read was Killers of the Flower Moon by David Grann. Historical account of the beginnings of the FBI. Read like a western, true crime. HF novel all in one, but also heartwrenching what was done to the indigenous people of Oklahoma. I found it quite interesting so I think this would be a great idea for you to launch!! Maybe start with a group read for Nonfiction November :)
Loved hearing about your bookish bucket list ideas! You might start with doing something with local author/s. Or an author with a book set in your state or area. Our library has been great with events like this.
My passions, besides reading of course, are scrapbooking and junk journals. I would love to do a Junk journal exclusively about books. My TBR lists, book club reads, fav books read, bookish quotes or articles. Recommended reads....you get the idea :)

One thing I'd like to do is actually read classics. High school destroyed them for me because you have to nit pick them apart. And I just like to enjoy the stories, ya know? So maybe I'll work on planning that out to start in the next year or two?
The one local book club I go to is run by a former lit professor. And she chooses books that usually make literary lists. She takes group suggestions of course. And it's not always literary fiction. But as someone who doesn't critically read books, I personally love when people like you are there! I love learning what I don't know or what I didn't notice. I don't want to get deep into this, but the whole "In A Small Town" drama going on right now. The majority of people just don't see what's between the lines, ya know? So in order to grow as a person, someone needs to help us out. 🙂 Because one, simply, cannot know all the things all the time. Lol.
There are definitely some classics I would like to Read. And the idea of a literary vacation sounds amazing now when I read books I'm gonna be looking for vacations. I would love to follow along with a blog style vacation when you end up doing this

My bookish bucket list would include touring authors homes in the US, Canada, and Mexico such as Gene Stratton Porter's home (my grandmother collected her works), Laura Ingalls Wilder home, Ernest Hemingway's homes, etc.
These all sound very interesting. I've done some of these things myself.
I was a political science major in college, but the next type of class I usually took was something to do with literature, including a number of classes that focused on subgenres of Shakespeare's plays, i.e., the histories, comedies, dramas, etc. I guess I could've minored in it - literature, not necessarily Shakespeare, that is.
I've also been to The Strand a few times and really enjoyed myself. (I love New York.) I've not been to Powell's, mostly because I hate flying and I live on the east coast. I have, however, ordered from them in the past.
Finally, I took something of a literature vacation. Right before the pandemic hit, my cousin and I visited Scotland (which is also a part of our ethnicity) and did a mini Outlander tour with a company. It was loads of fun and I sure would like to do more of the same. (In the 90s, when I went to Paris, I visited Versailles and was blown away by the portraits of actual people and other details I found that I had read in Annemarie Selinko's Desiree. it was hard to believe that they were real people.)
I don't really have many bookish goals, other than trying to read as much of my massive TBR pile as possible. I would like to visit more beloved used book stores, unique libraries & bookstores -- like one in Virginia that was made from a bank -- and to read more classics, which I'm woefully behind on.
For a the experience of reading a book in its setting, it might be fun to visit Pottsville, Pennsylvania and read _Appointment in Samara_ by John O’Hara. He calls the town “Gibbsville” in his stories, but it is based on his hometown of Pottsville.
My next Shakespeare read is going to be _Titus Andronicus,_ reportedly Shakespeare’s trashiest play. For GarbAugust, of course.

Ditto on The Strand/Powell's visits (field trips anyone?), literary travel experiences, book club (non-fiction would be great and to keep the time together/discussion focused on the book - not the food/wine, jobs, etc.). I just went to an author panel at my local Barnes & Noble a week ago featuring six local authors that was inspiring and I hope to go to more of those in the future at my local independent bookstores too.

English major here. I’ve also worked in publicity for a professional Shakespeare Festival. Shakespeare’s plays are meant to be played more than read. Many people do read Shakespeare, but I highly recommend attending live plays instead of or in addition to reading them. There is so much wordplay in Shakespeare that it is an absolute delight to see it on stage, in action. 🎭

I'm a fan of Shakespeare's plays, especially Othello and Hamlet. I read them both as I was growing up and then I studied Hamlet in High School. I also read Wuthering Heights and didn't like it, but tried again in my 20's and still found I disliked it, so I've never finished it. My book themed ideas for my Bucket list include seeing a play in Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, visit Jane Austen's House, and eat breakfast at Tiffany's.

I've read a few Shakespeare plays, but definitely want to read more. I've never read an Edith Wharton book. I would like to read more classics: more Jane Austen, The Master and Margarita, Anna Karenina (I've seen the ballet twice), Wuthering Heights (I was confused by the beginning as a teen and DNF'd it), some Dickens, Dracula, Frankenstein , Phantom of the Opera, reread Jane Eyre. I would also love to travel to some places I've read about(especially throughout Scotland and Ireland). I definitely want to read more nonfiction and I have read more this year, but would like to continue that.

As a lover of lists and goals or personal challenges, I love this! It’s got me thinking of items I would put on this list myself. Edith Wharton, oh yes! I have loved her for years. I’m doing this with John Steinbeck, reading at least one of his books each summer. In my head it’s called Steinbeck summer. We match also with rereading classics. In my case, books I read in high school. I picked ones I liked to start with, but I particularly want to reread ones I didn’t like and see if my taste has changed enough to like them now. More than anything, I hope to see you on Jeopardy! That would be thrilling💕

So so enjoyed this video, your passion for topics is always so enjoyable to hear about! You really inspired me with your sports book reviews to start dabbling more in that area and it's been so fun reclaiming my interactions with sports and realising there's a lot I like about them. I recommend watching the 1955 film adaptation of Richard III with Laurence Olivier. I really enjoyed the movie even though I had not read the play.
That would be a good video on all the bookstores you’ve been to. I don’t think there’s another video like that. I’m a beginner to the classics. I don’t like Pride and Prejudice or Jane Eyre. I couldn’t finish either book. Any ideas of where I could start. Something simple maybe?

I also recently gave myself the goal of either reading or watching all of Shakespeares plays! A recent goal I've started is to read a book set or inspired by every country in the world, I bought one of those scratch off posters of the world and whenever I read a book in a country I scratch off the country. Yes to a nonfiction bookclub!

Shakespeare- I’ve been prioritizing my reading of his works by which ones are part of the Hogarth Shakespeare project with modern retellings. So far I’ve read The Tempest and it’s retelling Hagseed by Margaret Atwood - not amazing but enjoyable. This year I’m reading Macbeth and it’s retelling Macbeth by Jo Nesbo.

If you like women's sports, I wonder if you'd find 90s figure skating interesting. If you want another nonfiction book, I think you'd like Floating Coast by Bathsheba Demuth. It's a combination of Indigenous, Russian, British, and American political and ecological whaling history. Also, The Field of Blood by Joanne Freeman is really good.

I would like to visit the most beautiful libraries in the world, taking a favorite book with me and spending a morning or afternoon reading. The boys ghost obstacle is that many are private.

I recently read some books I read in high school , which I didn't like then but now I didn't really understand why I didn't love the books then because I found them interesting and humourous... Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton is modelled on Macbeth. There was a series of books a few years ago that were inspired by Shakespeare plays. Would a combination of the plays and the books that were inspired by them work ? I think it was called the Hogarth series.
