Richard lol Richard: We do a tradition to introduce the new kid on the block right? Gene: Yes Richard: Well let me introduce the kid that owns the block (pointing at Mark) lol.
Gene Rayburn said in an interview that Mark Goodson never created a game show. What he did was take other people's ideas for game shows and tweak them to make them better.
+Foolishpleazure Mark Goodson seldom appeared on camera, but he hosted "to Tell the Truth" a few times (the last when Alex Trebek rushed to the hospital to greet his son into the world). He was very good!
+Peter Harris When I was a little boy, and I'd watch "The Price is Right", at the end, they'd say this has been a "Mark Goodson -Bill Todman production".
I would say not necessarily closeted, just not out front about it. Charles Nelson Reilly, and for that matter Paul Lynde, were men who were able to use the "wink wink nudge nudge" about their sexuality and turn it into comic gold.
notgrillo collector/ gamer 30? He was nearly 50 when he did these shows. I guess that by "up there," you mean the fictional place known as Heaven. CNR is nothing more than worm food.
At 3:55 Gene may have unduly tainted the first question by saying "Who else will go down the --" after Mark Goodson says Ira is through. Possibly the contestant would have said "drain" anyway, but...
1:55. Brett would have understood the question if she wasn't drunk. But then again this is her way of monopolizing the show. She hasn't worked in years. Match Game gave her life support.
This was from CNR's final week for 6 months, during which time Gary Burghoff (and occasionally Nipsey Russell, Orson Bean and Richard Deacon) filled the spot next to Brett.
CNR took several sabbaticals from the show. He later took a break to direct "The Belle of Amherst" on Broadway. Julie Harris won a Tony for her role in the play.
I think in fairness, Mark should have stayed on for both contestants for that one round so each contestant works with the same group - same minds coming up with answers. Just so things are equal. ...but I also understand Charles is one of the stars of the show too.
I am so VERY glad the program producers got even with Jack Klugman, Brett was one of the funniest and brightest aspects of this program. Her banter between Charles, Richard, and usually the lady in seat 6 is often show-stealing. (I sigh as I write this. I didn't mean for this to be on here, but, I"m not finding a quick google search to answer this. Grab a cuppa, a brownie, or a gummy or two, and sit back... Jack Klugman was on Match Game as a panelist when the show was starting in 73. He did a couple of days, maybe 3 (that is a complete week of shows, each day that was taped). He would gently make fun of his wife, at the time, Brett Somers. It was unscripted snarky humor and was rather funny. I only saw the episodes in order thanks to YT. Someone had the brainchild of, "Why don't we bring Brett on, to defend herself, the next time Jack is on?" and quickly became one of the featured fixtures of the panelist. When she was first on, I believe she sat in seat 6, not the second, as she was featured in from season 4 on. Now, I realize that I probably have bits wrong, but, I am open for corrections.)
Brett's hair style - or wig - was flattering..she IS a handsome woman, and i love her raucous laugh...and she's no more an attention-getter than any of the others...CNR is a good example.....
Back in 1965 Match Game had one celebrity and two game players competing against each other. They also had a "home" call to folks who submitted their name and phone number. They called a woman and said "name a fur other than mink" and she shouted "wildcat!"
Barnholtz-Noble, round 2, question A: "Out in the RAIN, poor gal." (Bzzt!) Question B: "He was feeling patriotic, so he had it shaped like a MAP OF SICILY." (Bzzt!) Super Match: (if asked before Richard) WHITE (if asked after Richard) BRONSON Noble-Dastur, round 1, question A: "There was no need to change the question. He's going as A CERTAIN MRS. KLUGMAN, of course." (Ding!) Question B: "You mean I matched them *both* on the first round? Holy cow, I must be ill. Sure, a FIRE!" (Ding!)
lol...funny!!!..I remember this growing up in the '70s..do you have a fire Richard???..well Gene I fond of you but...lol!!!!!..Richard Dawson was funny..he'd be even funnier on Family Feud..MatchGameProductions do you have the whole week with Arte???...I love him...I told you I was sweating next to the boss...lol (Brett) rip Charles Brett
Charles was a pretty big star. He was on the Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show, Broadway and multiple guest starring roles. He wasn't expressly out but he was living his best life.
I always watched this show....one of my favorites! The 70s were way more open! Healthier way to be. I can remember my brother introducing me to one of his friends and saying he's gay and thinking that's too bad I wanted to hit on him! I say this in reference to the below comment about Charles. I know there were jokes but it wasn't a put down it was done differently. I can't explain it you'd just have to have grown up in it..people were not very politically correct but they didn't slam anyone
This Show, Creator,Host & Stars can NEVER be "Matched".. pardon the pun. All kidding aside,"they" should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to have a "reboot " (Especially with not ONE(1) of surviving stars on panel
Richard lol
Richard: We do a tradition to introduce the new kid on the block right?
Gene: Yes
Richard: Well let me introduce the kid that owns the block (pointing at Mark) lol.
And thus Mark retired from the Match Game panel with a perfect match record. :P
Mark Goodson is the greatest game show creator ever!
Many of his game shows were actually created by people on his staff.... especially Bob Stewart.
Gene Rayburn said in an interview that Mark Goodson never created a game show. What he did was take other people's ideas for game shows and tweak them to make them better.
Mark Goodson showed to be a very humble, genuinely nice guy :)
Since it was a studio audience they polled, I correctly guessed that "Betty White" would be the $500 answer.
Kudos to Mark Goodson for agreeing to stand in while Charles returns from the rug shop ;o)
I remember watching this when I skipped school! Hahahahaha
Mark Goodson should have played for a week, always seemed like a very nice man.
I would say not necessarily closeted, just not out front about it. Charles Nelson Reilly, and for that matter Paul Lynde, were men who were able to use the "wink wink nudge nudge" about their sexuality and turn it into comic gold.
We all love you charles and up there you're 30 w a full head of natural hair! R I P
notgrillo collector/ gamer 30? He was nearly 50 when he did these shows. I guess that by "up there," you mean the fictional place known as Heaven. CNR is nothing more than worm food.
He would have been 43 in 1974
@DanR67 Golly. Negative much?
I love how being pc just didn't exist back then. Nobody takes themselves to serious.
Amen.
One of the most hilarious game shows ever created!
Betty never missed a beat saying "no but I have on my jacket." What a trooper!
0:47 Gene's reaction to seeing Mark Goodson in CNR's seat... PRICELESS!
Richard Dawson called Mark Goodson “the Kid who Owns the Block” which was true.
At 3:55 Gene may have unduly tainted the first question by saying "Who else will go down the --" after Mark Goodson says Ira is through. Possibly the contestant would have said "drain" anyway, but...
You're right! He did kind of elude to it.
Match game is one of fun shows to watch.it one of favorite show when I was young.still is today it's March 22 2019
And just think, that nine-month-old baby is about 42 now.
Wasn't it unfair when Gene said the answer should rhyme with"plain"?
This show is so great - and could never get made today!
The day of Charles' "hairpiece malfunction"!
1:55. Brett would have understood the question if she wasn't drunk. But then again this is her way of monopolizing the show. She hasn't worked in years. Match Game gave her life support.
Michele Lee's card at the beginning is a shout-out to her son David Farentino, who was 5 at the time.
Some days... BRETT WAS JUST A PLAIN PAIN IN THE KEISTER!
3:54. Gene just gave away the answer and he knew it!
First question Brett, that's the WORST answer you ever gave!"
Taped October 19th, 1974. Aired October 31st, 1974.
I'd have been delighted if a panelist had said "Betty Page" (which would have been extraordinarily unlikely in 1974).
betty crocker? betty white is the obvious answer
ESPECIALLY since she was sitting right THERE and is a regular on the show!
I seem to recall that that was used in another episode and Betty Crocker was one of the answers.
Charles' hair piece looks like the one they put on Rob Reiner in All in the Family.
wow anybody else think Brett looks fantastic here? great episode :)
Nah. Her annoying big mouth uglies her up no matter what.
This was from CNR's final week for 6 months, during which time Gary Burghoff (and occasionally Nipsey Russell, Orson Bean and Richard Deacon) filled the spot next to Brett.

her name was BETTE davis, not betty davis
I am so VERY glad the program producers got even with Jack Klugman, Brett was one of the funniest and brightest aspects of this program. Her banter between Charles, Richard, and usually the lady in seat 6 is often show-stealing.

Brett looks so lovely! Love Michele Lee too and Betty White!
Brett's hair style - or wig - was flattering..she IS a handsome woman, and i love her raucous laugh...and she's no more an attention-getter than any of the others...CNR is a good example.....
I was expecting Arte to say: Very stupid, but interesting.
Mark Goodson was a fine on-camera personality.
Charles Nelson Reiley Has Cool Hair
He did look good on this episode.
That should have been a no-brainer to pick Betty White, especially since she happened to be on the panel.
Back in 1965 Match Game had one celebrity and two game players competing against each other. They also had a "home" call to folks who submitted their name and phone number. They called a woman and said "name a fur other than mink" and she shouted "wildcat!"
Charles: "I'm sorry I took the time".
Skunk was a good answer.
Barnholtz-Noble, round 2, question A: "Out in the RAIN, poor gal." (Bzzt!)
Question B: "He was feeling patriotic, so he had it shaped like a MAP OF SICILY." (Bzzt!)
Super Match: (if asked before Richard) WHITE
(if asked after Richard) BRONSON
Noble-Dastur, round 1, question A: "There was no need to change the question. He's going as A CERTAIN MRS. KLUGMAN, of course." (Ding!)
Question B: "You mean I matched them *both* on the first round? Holy cow, I must be ill. Sure, a FIRE!" (Ding!)
RIP Arte Johnson
Just once I would love to see Brett backhanded off her chair.
LoL that would've been the highest rated show of the series.
lol...funny!!!..I remember this growing up in the '70s..do you have a fire Richard???..well Gene I fond of you but...lol!!!!!..Richard Dawson was funny..he'd be even funnier on Family Feud..MatchGameProductions do you have the whole week with Arte???...I love him...I told you I was sweating next to the boss...lol (Brett) rip Charles Brett
Betty White is queen 🙌🏾
I'd like to have Betty's shirt with the lions. Cute!
You shut your mouth; Betty White always was and always will be beautiful.
Love Betty's dimples. Betty Ford was a good answer giving it was the early 70's. It would be natural say Betty White giving she was on the show.
she's right there in front of the audience, of course she would be number one
I was 3 days old - October 19th, 1974
I would of said Betty boop
my first thought was the same as the contestant: Crocker.....
CNR is a REAL fairy, hence the in joke
Bette davis is e not y so that was a mistake
interesting how open they were to charles being gay in 1974, i think most people were in the closet back then.
Charles was a pretty big star. He was on the Dean Martin Show, The Tonight Show, Broadway and multiple guest starring roles. He wasn't expressly out but he was living his best life.

Exactly. There's good natured funning. I agree that being more open is the better way.
Does anyone know where I can find episodea 1171 & 1172 of Match Game 78?
Betty Boop
2:24 is that Avery Schrieber's moustache with Fannie Flagg's hair? O.o
15:08--The "think music" ran out and had to be restarted.
In the 80's, I had a crush on Michelle Lee. She just got prettier and prettier.
oh how everyone wished that ira was actually through.....
VTR stands for "blank." What is it? I see October 19, 1974. I was not born then.
Dream Big Productions/Plush Bat Fan Video tape recording.
Brett's hair looks nice. I didn't recognize her.
How long DOES it take to nail down a toupee! CNR is off for the first 6:27 of tape time, plus a 2-minute commercial break!
I don't know I've never had it done.
Where are all the missing episodes ???
A match game show where 1/2 of the panelists are still alive.
Charles disguised as a straight person.
Grain? Good grief.
dean
I would have won 500 dollars because I would have said Betty White without even asking any of the panelists.
wow... lol
"I never did like Indonesians!" LOL
Charles was probably in Connecticut with his partner LOL
nicholas fragalejr bett somers chalers neson wafe relly coffee love kisss 10000am 1000am

Betty White For the win! :D
Charles hair looks better later on in the 70s....I just didn't like this hair piece. ......
This Show, Creator,Host & Stars can NEVER be "Matched".. pardon the pun. All kidding aside,"they" should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to have a "reboot " (Especially with not ONE(1) of surviving stars on panel
Can you get these clearer
Ident:
Cube Race (7 seconds)
A fairy? Would that make this a banned episode?
