Was blown away by this game when it came out. Dreamcast was the system to own. The game looked great back then but most importantly the gameplay was very fun & challenging. The early days of 2K Sports games were something else.

This dropped when I was 5 and just had "borrowed" my sister's boyfriend's Dreamcast from him. I remember taking it to my grandparents house the same night I got it, and my grandma, completely seriously, asked me "Who's playing tonight"? The graphics were that good for the time.
This game also started my love for the Dreamcast, which remains to this day, lol

Happened w my step grandpa as well. He thought 2k football was a live game being broadcast. "Didn't know the 49ers were playing on Saturday. How are they doing?" Took a few plays for him to realize I was playing a game, and not watching one. 😆

Got to say that out of the 3 NBA2K games on dreamcast, the best one is probably either 2k1 or 2k2
2k1 has way more simulation based game play, while 2k2 is much more arcade like. 2k is almost like a middle ground kind of game that has simulation game play, but arcade-ish controls and speed

Like the Dreamcast itself, 2K Sports hit that generation with a bang. Those games were awesome for 1999. NFL 2K OBLITERATED Madden 2000. And yeah, NBA 2K was a step up from NBA Live...easily. They did what EA needed: Provided competition. And for a while, that company rose to the challenge. We know what eventually happened.

The graphics and gameplay were amazing, second only to the NFL 2K game out around the same time. Allen Iverson being my favorite player at the time (now too) had to have the game and I was more than happy with the game. Seeing your character yelling while making a dunk or block was such a great detail... NBA 2K6 though, with that sweat renderer oooooooweeeeeeeeee

  • @ninja_tony

My friends and I put hundreds - maybe even thousands - of hours into this game as well as the 2 Dreamcast sequels after it. I hadn't touched a 2K game in several years, but just recently played 2K22, and honestly.....while it looks gorgeous, I think I enjoyed this game much more. One of the biggest reasons for me personally is that when we played this back in 99, we all created our own players and teams, we almost never used real life players, and we had a blast coming up with the most ridiculous creations possible. I remember I made the smallest player the game would allow, named him Flea, after the RHCP bass player, and of course I made him a center! lmao
The level of freedom this game had for creativity was unmatched, and in 1999, felt like a dream come true. The more modern games seem to have stripped away that level of control. Like in 2K22, you can create your own players and teams still, but - unless I'm completely stupid about the game - it's significantly harder to just get the players you want on a team. In this game, you just selected the players you wanted for your team, and that's it. But in 2K22, you have to go through a million steps to get them on the team you want, and then you even have to mess with the myleague settings to KEEP them on that team, or else they might get drafted/traded by another team.
I don't know, I guess I'm just frustrated with how the newer games always seem to overcomplicate things, but in its time, this game was absolutely mind blowing to me. And even though the graphics are obviously dated now, the game itself stands as one of the best sports games ever made.

But once I got used to it being more simulation based, I loved it. And the free throw system was crazy but when you really learn it, it can become fun to use. But my all time favorite thing about the game at the time was the player creation. It allowed me to have certain accessories like leg sleeves and rubber bands. Let's be real, no matter how great game they used to make, by now they would work only on Olympics. Judging from SEGA pulling out of sports games after VT4.

Great video and also the next year 2K1 was the first nba online multiplayer game ! Super laggy but it was still fun

This game was a huge deal for me. Amazing in late 1999; the details that no other game had presented before were present here, from the design of individual arenas (believe it or not, this wasn't really done before 2K) to Stockton's short shorts to Shaq's free throw stance.
The Dreamcast was a huge leap over N64 and PSX. And even presented a good jump over my Pentium III in 1999 (to be fair, in this case this wasn't because the PC hardware wasn't superior [at least off the CPU] but because the software standards, particularly for PC sports games, were often specc'd lower).

A nice basis for comparison like SDTV said...check out what NBA Live 98 looked like on the PS1. That was the year before.

I have an idea for a next video. "How would a good football game look like" i think you have a great vision for that. And I feel like you about the old football games.

I actually picked up a Dreamcast a few days ago and I ordered nba2k1, nfl2k1, and a few other gems my favorite console growing up had this game back in 2000.

Greetings from Florida. I was fortunate enough to be in college living with 3 of my best friends to this day...we played this game endlessly. BTW the NFL 2K series was definitely fantastic

Nfl2k , Nhl2k ,nfl2k ... All absolutely incredible and mind blowing when they came out. They were just so smooth and so many little details that no game had .. heck even games now don't have. I used to love watching the players on the bench realistically watch and respond to the play.

Double dribble is by far the most realistic basketball game I've played. I mean the look the tank like control, Sprite flickering how can you not mention this classic.
