Illness or no illness there will be a lot of tenors who would like to sing this well. Certainly a great singer before his illness and I for one am glad he continued to sing after his illness. An example to us all.
1983 Carreras was another tenor. This sounds like the 90's, with much more insecure high notes and more vibrato. He's still one of my all time favorites, this latin Heldentenor!
This would also be post cancer. That chemo and long therapy is tremendously hard on the body. He came back rather quickly and successfully, but the voice was still effected. ♥
The problem is that we have two Jose Carreas voices Pre 1987,and Post 1987. In the late 80's Jose was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.Although with treatment he recovered, the voice was never what it had been before(sadly) Whether this was the result of the leukemia,or the harsh drugs and treatment he had for it who can say?
Few can match the voice quality of Carreras at his best. One of the more beautiful and interesting, especially in his prime. I’ll take his any day over the more “technically superior” voices whose praises the opera snobs love to sing.
Don't take that stuff about having trouble with high notes too seriously. Tenors just like to feel sorry for themselves. There are many tenors with more insecure top ends and many baritones too. I heard Pavarotti blow a top note in Lucia and Domingo in Pagliacci. Carreras, when well, was quite reliable. This piece may be too heavy for him but it's not too high. A great, great singer but maybe a bit to introspective.
Carreras has always admitted in interviews that he had a problem with high notes. But, who cares about high notes? He can brings the notes a little lower and still sound wonderful. Besides his stage presence and good looks forgive the lack of high C...
The illness is called "Giganticitis". By age 11 he certainly believed himself to be the next Pippo or Lanza. However, God failed to cooperate with him in his ambition. He is lacking the requisite amount of vocal folds for greatness, and also pharyngeal space for high notes.
He sang for many years with a damaged voice. This is obviously too heavy for him. Why didn’t he just stick to singing the lyric tenor repertorio? I don’t get it!
You can't stick with the lyric forever it's not a matter of choice but of possibility the voice become havier with ageing ..In most cases everything is personal it's how you age ...
XX.
Sorry. Too much vibrato and sometimes a bit flat. Straining. Nothing like his young years. Remarkable vocal courage and control of his then limited capability

Indeed, he is an inspiring example of perseverance and committed passion. Bravo!
Espetáculo de voz❤🎶❤️🎶❤️
Thank you for sharing this phantastic moment! Josep Carreras is my favourite tenor.
One of greatest!!! Beautiful voice!!!
He is the most gorgeous leading man, with stage presence, interpretive subtlety, charisma, and most importantly, a voice that melts hearts.

One of the great voices regardless what of others say.
Stupenda!

By his mid-30's the best of his voice was gone.
Semplicemente meraviglioso.
I saw Fedora with Carreras (and Baltsa) at the Wiener Staatsoper in 1994.
Thank you for recording. Remembrance of times past :-)
Feliz cumpleaños, maestro!!!!!!!
Fenomeno assoluto
Gran tenor español.

Bravoooooooooooooooooooooooooo
No, this perfomance was recorded live in Liceu in 1993. I Have it on dvd.
I like it! Bravo!
Absolutament perfecte!! Ets molt gran, Josep 👍🏻
Bello!
this aria is gorgeous.I think Carreras does a fine job.
ESPLENDIDOS
And isn't that the much-loved Enric Serra at.30, talking to the lady in green?

In fact, lucpebo2 is right, this performance was in 1993, and you can see it complete at my youtube channel. Thanks. bye.

@eurydike
I'm sorry but it's not on sale. But right now I'm puting the entire performance on youtube. Have a look on my channel. Thanks. bye.
Far from his best here, but in his prime he had a wonderful voice, vibratto is all over the place here
where is it possible to get this dvd?
Por qué tan gritado?
thanks for sharing this, but it's 1983, not 1993
Yes, 1993, I saw it at Covent Garden in ‘94.

Yes, in the 1970's, a great singer. Not in 1993.

Childishly grandiose. Indeed narcissism wrecked a once lovely personable voice.

E allora sentite Mario del Monaco…
Already shot vocally here. His illness obviously made things very much worse, but he was in late di Stefano territory long before Pippo himself.
Yeah. He was really pushing here. Sounds like it too.

It seems that Carrera's vocal line is all shot up at a very early age. It's a shame, bacause he did have a fine quality of voice early on

Carrera seems to struggle that was not very good
