  • Hundreds of thousands of residents & homeowners are still waiting for dangerous cladding remediation works to complete, leaving them suffering significant emotional and financial distress.
Since the Grenfell Tower fire seven years ago, government has been supporting identification of unsafe buildings in England to drive building owners to progress with remediation work.
While there has been substantial remediation activity since we last reported on the issue in 2020, we found that work is likely to continue for the next decade. Here’s why:
    • there are an estimated 9,000-12,000 buildings (over 11 metres) that need remediating but only 4,771 buildings identified & in the government's portfolio
    • up to 60% of estimated buildings that need remediation are yet to be identified
    • some buildings may never be identified
Remediation work is estimated to cost £16.6 billion, with £9.1 billion funded by government. Plans to recoup some of these costs through the Building Safety Levy have been delayed until Autumn 2025 at the earliest, putting the cap on taxpayer contributions of £5.1 billion in the long run at risk.
We urge government to provide greater transparency on remediation performance, and publish an end date for all remediation works. This will prevent further suffering to residents living in unsafe buildings, and to help ensure taxpayers get value for money.
