Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals: SXSW 2016 | NPR MUSIC FRONT ROW

- Опубліковано 16 лис 2024
- Without a doubt, Anderson .Paak is the new "it" guy of that place where R&B and hip-hop overlap. It sort of happened overnight, and we can kind of credit Dr. Dre, who gave .Paak permission to leave his fingerprints all over Dre's long-awaited return to music, 2015's Compton. But the palpable, feverish excitement in the breezy night air at Stubb's during NPR Music's SXSW showcase in the moments leading up to .Paak's set was all his own.
Backed by his jaw-droppingly malleable band, The Free Nationals, Anderson .Paak hit our stage sounding as refreshed and crystal clear as he does on his album Malibu, the moment when our collective ears perked up at NPR Music - even after giving his all at at least two showcases before ours, with another coming immediately after.
Throughout the set, .Paak sang and rapped effortlessly, stretching and flexing between each form, the passion in his voice making the transitions seamless. When he wasn't taking us down with his voice, it was the cool oozing out of his dance moves; when it wasn't his dance moves, it was the crowd-pleasing moment when he jumped behind the drum kit and immediately felt right at home.
With every meticulously crafted and performed note, audience members, security, bartenders and NPR staff alike couldn't help but look at one another with wonderment in our eyes - but we didn't dwell on it, because .Paak made damn sure to make us dance. People of all colors, shapes and sizes grooved and swayed together to .Paak and crew, from the stone cold jam "Am I Wrong," to the hat-tip cover of the late David Bowie's "Let's Dance," to "Suede," one of thesongs we loved in 2015. With all of those moments rolled into one, .Paak showed and proved that where good music appears, the party will undoubtedly follow. - Katie Fitzgerald

Prophecy
Man how little did you know what was coming!
But respect the heart of it....r&b.
As a metalhead who LOVES his music, you have no idea how true your statement is!
Prince is looking down on this dude smiling forreal
I thought the same thing! Reminded me of the live version of Joy in Repetition that is out there now! Love this.
They aren't even alike...
Man look up the artist Harts. For real, if you love Prince influenced music Harts is the go to man (as much as I love Paak). The dude is so good that Prince worked with him a few years ago. Harts is Aussie as well
REAL TALK
Want .Paak to become a legend
Cool, buy the albums and tell your friends!
pretty sure he's on his way already:D
He already has.
taking it to a whole new level... way past those before him like van hunt or lenny
.paaks not dead! lol
4 years later, and Anderson .Paak is still the best performer and artist out there🙏
5 years later*
6… still holds true
Anderson .Paak is a breathe of fresh air........
Holy shit this dude is hip-hop, rock, r&b soul, and pop all in one
Anderson Paak is a reflection of god and someone who is literally overflowing with music. he's so hungry to get better. like a true ass artist.
.Paak has to be a household name by year's end. This dude controls the stage effortlessly and make me groove out
His music just like a combination of everything danceable and energetic.
Saw this guy live and immediately knew he would be a star. Had so much stage presence and had the entire crowd POPPING
I can see why..he's so full of talent with energy for days 👏🎶❤
Heard him for the first time today and he immedeatly flashed me
I would’ve been dancing like a back up dancer.. He has the ability to get the crowd moving. I love him!
World hasn't seen a singing drummer since the rock'n'roll days. Good shit.
Phil Collins ... Dave Grohl ...
Phil is 65 so he has technically lived the rock'n'roll era and dave plays guitar for the most part. Quest appearance on the drums doesn't count.
Dave doesn't do it all of the time now, but there are videos of performances where he is singing while on the drums. But that could lead to Taylor Hawkins also
And of course I'm sticking to lead singing, since Dave has done it as a member of Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures too.
Ya'll forgot about Levon, who would no doubt respect .Paak
Dave Grohl doesn't sing while playing drums. Taylor Hawkins does in his side project though, which is actually really solid.
His stage presence is fucking incredible
+Natalie Rodriguez That's really gonna separate him from the pack. Don't think I've ever felt this much energy from a performance on a computer screen.
I couldn't agree more. Julian Wyllie
Julian Wyllie the “Paak”
@caprice.t love them ! and they do !
That’s why they call him Cheeky- ✌️🇺🇸
This is that 70s funk soul shit, love it.

blakeandcamp I disagree. They are both very talented artists and favorites of mine.
I was planning on watching a few minutes of this video, but I watched the whole thing. I couldn't stop.

*Miss Right just became my favorite after this performance!!*
I have been listening to Anderson .Paak for about 6 months now and own everything he has put out in hard copy, and the little stuff digitally.
*He has been on CONSTANT ROTATION!*
*THANK YOU NPR FOR THE INTRODUCTION*
.......as usual =)
I thought I knew sexy until I saw this performance! My god, Miss Right oooowee. I need it, and I do most definitely mind.
Agree. Incredible!
Sounds just as clean as the album.... Long live the funk
In 2018, soul is in good hands. Somewhere, James Brown is smiling. God forbid, if Anderson were to somehow die tomorrow, it would go down as one of the most painful examples of unfulfilled potential in our time in music. This man has the path to legendary status in his own hands. A powerful artist.
the groove on this guy and the whole band is just awesome!!
Love Anderson Paak~ such a musical range, talent, performer!!!
Man..., I gotta believe Prince would have loved this Cat. Maybe he was aware but I have no idea. Bet they would have played "Miss You" together. It goes from R&B to Rock. Wow..., mind blowing!
I see D'Angelo
Best 40 minutes of music I have EVER heard. Too good!

Just saw him live at The Roots Picnic...dude's insanely talented!! One of the best live performances I've ever seen
Being a fan since I saw him in Nov. 2014 in Charlotte, it makes my heart happy to see the homie getting the recognition he deserves. Such a new different sound, but with such a vintage approach. I love it.
Curtis Wallen yoooooo that was where I became a fan too! He’s amazing!
