More importantly, you have the freedom to choose your row or column. Suppose you see two zeros next to each other, then select that row, as you will have to do only 1 calculation

Determinant is the sum of product of the elements of a row or column of the matrix with their corresponding co factors. And adjoint of the matrix is the transpose of the co factor matrix of matrix A. Now what we multiply is the elements of a row of a with the elements of the corresponding column
of its co factor matrix.
a11C11 + a12C12 +a13C13 = Value of determinant. Where a11 , a12 , a13 are elements of first row and C are their respective cofactors

because adjoint is the transpose of co-factor matrix of the given matrix so if we multiply the the cofactors row with the respective elements of the same row and add them we get the the determinant

Each element of first row of determinant has their corresponding cofactors in the first column of the adjoint matrix. And determinant is nothing but multiplying the elements of the first row (in this case) with the corresponding cofactors of the second row.
