u totally forgot to mention 3ds modding which is pretty much required to really enjoy the 3ds at its best now, it removes the region lock and download only games are avalable again and it reopens the online thanks to services like pretendo
my favorite games on the 3ds are the monster hunter games, especially monster hunter 4 ultimate and monster hunter double cross but they are aparently really hard and high level for japanese and its the kind of game to explain extremly complex mechanics on text boxes right before throwing u into a deadly fight
I am only a week in, and I am already finding reading Kanji actually to be easier than long strings of kana... My brain remembers their general meaning more, and helps me contextually understand (....guess) what the phrase is trying to say.
Fire emblem awakening is such a good game. I had just as much fun on my 1st play through as I did on my 3rd. It's definitely on my list of games to buy for my Japanese 3ds. I 100% agree about playing a game you love regardless of level. I enjoy pokémon but want engaged enough to enjoy it in Japanese. As soon as I voted up FF7, which I have beat 3 or 4 times, I enjoyed learning from it infinitely more.
the 3ds is incredibly easy to mod, if you mod it you can bypass any region locks and download games for free! the consoles are in high demand because of this though, so if you're looking to get a new one Japanese ones are the cheapest.
Great advice at the end there, think that’s my final push to play Yokai watch in Japanese. The games on switch are way different (and damn those tutorials) so I’m gonna give the series another shot from the 3ds
I own Japanese versions of RS, FRLG, platinum, hgss, BW and B2W2, and I’ve never really actually took the time to study the language despite always wanting to. Wanted to learn to better understand the natural spoken language. This actually gives me motivation to take the time to start.
One game I'd have to recommend is Megaman Battle Network (Rockman EXE). I play the DS ver. of BN1 a lot and it helped me learn a lot of katakana and some hiragana. I still am not seriously studying the language but it does help in some cases, the katakana that is. I was able to buy Biohazard Deadly Silence for way cheaper than the RE English version which is triple or more the price and its not only english voiced but most items are katakana.
I grew up playing the ol' nintendo's Zelda (Ocarina and Majora's Mask) which I own in their original N64 (and yes, I still own the console). This was the first game I opened up on my 3ds because it's my beloved one. These two were the first games my dad bought for me with the N64 (which in fact, is the special pikachu edition haha) when I was around 8 years and… Yep, I still own all of the games he bought for me. From pokemon colosseum, to zelda, to pokemon snap. Everything. I played them so many times that even being so bad at reading (my skill is listening/speaking) I still was able to follow up the story. I will give a try at the fire emblem games, that's the ones that I never tried. And I agree with "choose a game you love". THIS MAKES THE DIFFERENCE. I know a lot of people swear by VN but I just can't keep most of them, just feel so boring for me. I'll just keep trying with my fav Skyrim hahaha
Yesss play those games again in Japanese^^ And yeah, VNs can be good if you enjoy them, but I also don’t do they’re awful and demotivating for me haha. Doing something that’s enjoyable to begin with really helps when you make it challenging by adding that it’s in a different language haha
@@tystake totally!! I installed Skyrim in Japanese, I know the lang is odd and they speak a lot (and there's no pause) but I played it so many times, I even forgot how many times I leveled up +60 hahahaha I think I'm a sadist going for so hard games. I bought again Prey, Dishonored and Fallout games on SD because I love them so much. I don't remember the dialogues but give me time :P
The reason why I’m going to play ultra sun with no kanji is not because I’m scared of kanji or wanna stall but I feel like my mastery of hiragana and katana isn’t high enough so I don’t feel very confident so once I feel like my reading is good enough I’ll turn on kanji
@@gracesiemi yeah that might not be a bad idea depending on where you are in your studies. But kanji really help with grouping words together so I still recommend it ^^ Also, I hope you know that game really well haha. There’s a ton of dialogue so it can be a lot to get thru Either way, I would rec having a kana chart open and probably just using kanji with like google translate to capture the kanji or such, then look up in Jisho Here’s an NS kana chart: help.nativshark.com/learn/kana-charts Kana will stick before you know it because you just see em all so often 💪 Good luck!!
Not DS but Pokemon Legends text made me skip through a lot. 😆.... That's way too much talking even in English.... So I mostly stick with menus and occasionally looking up a word if I felt like it.
the only textbooks ive used are the japanese from zero series bc the author has youtube vids for all the lessons an helps with expanding knowledge an pronounciation
I looked through your description, the comments, and the video of course (and could've definitely missed it!), but I was wondering which model of the 3ds do you have/recommend? I have no gaming experience with consoles and I've been looking for a fun way to do some of my Japanese studying. Would you recommend the 3ds over the switch? I'm someone who's never touched a console, so I'm not sure what I'd prefer, but the size of the 3ds looks a lot better to me and because it closes I'd be less afraid that the screen would get damaged. Also it seems like the 3ds might have a lot more games available, but I'm not sure. What're your thoughts? :D
I don’t believe I’ve written it before! I have a Japanese 2DS LL which is the bigger model that does not has a 3D feature. It’s also the Animal Crossing (どうぶつの森) special edition. If you get a 2DS LL or a 3DS LL, you should be fine with keeping the screen safe! You could even get a normal 3DS (not LL) and that would just mean it’s a bit smaller. A 2DS (not LL) would be a bit weird if a pick and you can’t close it so that’s probably the only one I wouldn’t immediately recommend. As far as switch vs 3DS, I’d say both are good in their own ways. The switch is nice cuz you can screenshot stuff and come back to it later(or at least, tell yourself you’ll come back to it later and then never do, which is still a fine strategy lol). The 3DS is nice cuz I feel like the games can be easier for beginners and also you get an entire extra console’s worth of games via it being backwards compatible with the DS. TLDR is that both switch and 3DS are good, and you can’t go wrong with either. If you get a 3DS though, remember that LL are the big ones that close.
New to game console, I’ve check some 3DS consoles on eBay. You mentioned the console is regional locked and the consoles being sold on EBay are region free. Can they play games from Japan?
I imagine so? My guess is they’re probably hacked if they’re region free. I’ve never hacked my Nintendo systems before so I just bought the Japanese systems and game versions
@@tystake thanks! Being in the US, not easy getting a Japanese system, and when trying to order thru 3rd party website promising to ship , the site is overwhelming in Japanese. No button to switch to EN language 😂🤷🏾♂️
Thanks for the great video. You are the reason I made the splash into NativShark tbh. (Eventhough I think I didnt get the 60$ off somehow). Just wanted to say how important it is that you always repeat that people should take it easy. In todays world it is getting more and more to the point that if you dont see quick success people burn out. I will try and keep going 頑張りましょう! 本当にありがとうございました。
Thanks! Yeah I’ve seen lots of people asking me about being discouraged about not making progress and then they tell me they’ve only been studying for like 3 or 6 months. I always tell them to just relax it’s all good haha Also feel free to come to my discord, I could take a look if you DM me with details
I’ve actually never played any DQs before 🥲 I think especially if you’ve played it before, it would be good to at least give it a shot and see^^ If it’s a bit too tough, just come back in a few months!
I’ve never played them but I’ve heard they actually aren’t bad for learning! Apparently there’s a handful of court words you have to learn and after that you can kind of cruise haha.
Thanks GTA V, Minecraft, Warframe, etc. for teaching me English. Now it's time to learn Japanese with games!
omg, I remember how much minecraft taught me english as a teen !
I learned English playing RPGs and a dictionary.

exactly the same for me kana takes me a sec (maybe a little less) for each to read
Curious on a progress update! It’s been 10 months since the comment, how’s your kanji vocab? 😄

おすすめはありがとう。Loving all of your vids Ty, missed your chance for “but these are just Ty’s Takes” 😂.
Thanks! I actually had something like that recorded but it got cut 🤣🤣
Maybe next time 👀
I highly recommend the professor layton games for beginners/ intermediate. If you want a bit more of a challenge, hop into the ace attorney games.
I have played all versions of Final Fantasy 1 and I've played almost all of versions of Final Fantasy V. Maybe I should try learning with them.
Sounds like a fun idea to me! 👀

For the ones that are somehow challenge-deprived, the Sekaijuu no Meikyuu series is the one.
Watched this right after ordering a couple of textbooks for $100. Now I am regretting my life choices.
