Placido is just wonderful. I never heard of Dame Eva but I wish I had heard her sing.

There is no doubt whatsoever that Dame Eva was one of the most outstanding singers of all times (and no: she did not sing with .... Caruso!) Perfect technique, gorgeous sound, sheer beauty of the line, effortless production (and huge instrument!). She had it all! And to top it all, she most the kindest, unsophisticated and humblest person in the world. Unless so many singers today who believe to be "stars" are tired after two performances in .... a week! And handsome Domingo is a real treat: singing and accompanying himself at the piano! Unique and to-be-treasured moments! Thanks for this excerpt!

Really? Great and "Lucky you"! She was an amazing artist, endowed with a peerless, warm and gigantic voice. She had been very much appreciated in her first years in Italy, notably at Brescia, Bergamo, etc. Her voice so large that some of her younger and less endowed colleagues were afraid to sing with her! And what a humble lady. Bless her. I would dream to find her Turandot's costume and costume jewelry!

She call herself Prima-donna "like Tosca", and many times in the interview with Robert Merril, i dont think that is from an unsophisticated and humblest person...

"unsophisticated"? Dame Eva? (in her voice:)"I am terribly sorry but you are quite mistaken!"

I'm impressed to see Placido playing the piano and being able to sing effortlessly at the same time, at a professional level! My goodness this takes expertise & talent!

me too. I seen others do it always amazed. (Nat King Cole in the early part of his career, when he had his piano jazz combo was amazing! Singing, and improvising at the same time. Not just accompanying himself)

I listened to an interview with her when she was I think, 98, and she said when they recorded she had to stand behind the soloists, orchestra and the chorus, right at the back, so she didn't drown out the other soloists!

I met Dame Eva at the ROL music competition in the 1980’s; she was adjudicating the chamber music class with Lady Barbirolli … she must have been in her 90’s and still had a huge presence & aura 😊

Placido still had manners then, letting this 95 year old icon sit first before he sat down, unlike the host. Great to see she was in such great health and bright spirits right to the end.

Yes, Rosa Raisa was the first Turandot. Dame Eva sang it seven months later in 1926 in Italy, and then created the part at Covent Garden in 1928. In 1929, she sang it at La Scala.

  • @65attila

The First Turandot was Rosa Raisa in the La Scala production [1926].
Some consider Dame Eva the greatest "Turandot".

I believe the confusion comes from, I think Raisa and Turner both sang Tuandot in that first premier season but Raisa was first

El Gran Domingo siendo el artista total que manda que notamos que es el mejor tenor de todos por siempre. Con ese voz tan maravilloso. La senora muy linda y amable. Ver cómo ella reacciona a él. Mil gracias por compartir.

Dame Eva Turner was not the first Turandot. That was Rosa Raisa at premiere of was at La Scala, Milan, on Sunday 25 April 1926, one year and five months after Puccini's death.

Eh oui !
