  • "The Chosen" is a phenomenon in our day. Many people watch it. Many people are passionate about it. It is a polarizing show. Is it a good thing to watch "The Chosen"? Is it wrong to watch it? In today's episode, Jon and Justin aim to have a conversation that goes underneath the specific questions about "The Chosen" and gets to the real issues pertaining to the sufficiency of Scripture, how we are to worship God, the second commandment, and the quest for illegitimate religious experience.
Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin talk more openly about the dangers of media like "The Chosen," as well as the potential value of so called "secular" media.

My husband and I watched the first two seasons. Each time we watched we did enjoy the show but we found ourselves uncomfortable with all the additions and twists to/of scripture and questioned weather God would want us watching. Satan's question to Eve, "did God really say?" It's his way to misrepresent God's word. In our discernment we have chosen Not to watch the Chosen anymore although we really enjoyed it. It just feels wrong! People may start reading the Bible after watching, and I pray they will, but I think that people are basically lazy in this area and would prefer to wait for the next episode or rewatch an old one.

The people I worry a lot about are the collage age students, prostitutes, those addicted, etc who have never known the Love of God or even meet Jesus in there lives. If this show is playing in there room at 3 am and God uses it to touch their hearts, I am all for it.

An actor portraying Jesus is not an idol or an image to be worshipped unless people make it that way. It's just like any other movie/show about Jesus's life. They show the most beautiful thing about Him which is His love and bringing us Salvation! The Chosen helped my husband and I fall deeper in love with Jesus. Of course nothing and no one should take the place of spending time in the Bible and prayer. We shouldn't add to or take from Gods Word. As long as you understand it is just a movie and the important thing is to go and read scripture yourself for knowledge. God bless you all. Let us continue to walk in love✝️💜

A depiction of Jesus that isn't Jesus is literally what an idol is, by definition. Whether in motion or not. Whether "good intentioned" or not. Do you think the Israelites were good intentioned when they made the golden calf to represent God? Of course, they were! Even our best intentions are evil.

I come to this video 6 months later….a week after the pride flag showed up. I wasn’t invested, didn’t know the producer or history of the show, just picked up a couple DVDs off the store shelf. I think I enjoyed season 1, but never finished season 2. For me it was discomfort with how Jesus was being portrayed, I think.
Now, a pride flag in an official outtake I heard of by accident ….and my heart was grieved. I did more research and during that week God convicted me of the 2nd commandment. I threw away not just the chosen but dozens of DVDs that show Christs face and a beautiful picture hugging a child. I thought it was beautiful, but I want the even more beautiful true Jesus, not man’s creation. I say that in person and people make faces before looking away. Thank you for discussing this…it was a great comfort to me.
God put it on my heart (heavily - I cannot even describe it) to share the dangers of this show (fairly close to those covered here) with my Bible study group. It was not well received,. They had donated, bought the Bible studies, and watched all the social media. They were captives and so deep into it….all they could do was rebuke me and show shock I would question the show. Actually giving the argument they HAVE to fill in the white stuff….it makes him so relatable and brings millions to God.
To me, thinking you can display the “authentic Jesus” better than God’s word is the height of arrogance.
I pray God will convict them in other conversations or study of the Word. It isn’t about who is right, it is about resisting the sneaky snares of satan that come in the door looking wonderful…..and then proceed to make messes inside your home. I pray for all who are caught up in the show. And bless you for sharing your thoughts.

Be encouraged, you made a wise decision...this is a different gospel. Gal. 1 6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
11 But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The more I read scripture the more I realize how far off the church is from the bible in general. I got closer to God thru His word, not church. In fact it was church that had turned me against God when I was young and ignorant because I was deceived into thinking that the churches were of God. Those who really read the bible and knows what it says know that the antichrist beast system is religious deception. That should be obvious with all the doctrines of devils that is being taught. Bible says that they'll work signs and wonders but it'll only deceive those who don't know the bible because you don't know Christ if you don't know His word.

My point is that Christians seem to want to replace reading and studying the Bible with watching a TV series where you don’t get the true word of God in it’s proper context. I recently finished reading through the Bible in a year and it has been such a blessing and I have started reading through it again. As Christians, we have become lazy about reading and studying God’s word and I was one of them. It takes a commitment to do that but as we read and study the Bible, we are able to discern what is true and what is false.

I am not here to bash religions of any source, but growing up in a Irish/ Catholic family, I didn't get the full gospel because of all the formalities of the church. When I left home and tried to find my own way I obviously got lost in the ways of the world. Then I went to a meeting in a Christian church, no denomination (southern Baptist, Methodist, etc) is where I found the gospel. I always had Jesus in my heart so it was Him who lead me to where I was supposed to be. Thank you Heavenly Father!❤

Sorry guys, but if you want to comment on something, you need to know what it is first, and since you admit to not watching, you honestly do not have any idea what you are talking about when it come to the content of the show. There have been portraits painted of Jesus for centuries, film portrayals since film was invented, and the idea that if people see an actor as Jesus that they will worship that portrayal is flat out stupid and not backed by any facts. The guy playing Jesus is a actor, an actor hired to read the script and take direction from the director, he doesn’t think he is Jesus, we don’t think he is Jesus, you don’t know him so you don’t know what his beliefs are, but in the end it doesn’t matter what his beliefs are because he is just an actor hired to play a part, we are not asking him to lead church ministries. You some how got this idea that those who watch don’t know their Bible and can’t tell the difference between Scripture and parts used to fill in a character or scene. The show is not a substitute for Scripture, it is encouraging people to actually read the Bible. Not sure why you would be so against that, that you had to make a video telling people why they shouldn’t watch when you have zero first hand knowledge of the content or message of the show, or know the facts on how God is actually working through the series. Sorry but that makes you sound a little dishonest to me. I’ve actually seen the series and I know my Bible, and I can state with confidence that you are way off the mark on this.

    • @nycosplayernetworkcospodbe5265
      @nycosplayernetworkcospodbe5265 6 місяців тому

You are not apart of the official chosen fan group nor have heard the actor speak on this. Many fans call and see him jesus and see his eyes/ face when they pray and at the chosen convention, Dallas stated it was okay to do that, and the actor does not rebuke when people say that to him, or fall at his feet as one woman did when he was out in a resturant. The chosen puts in scenes not in the Bible and most fans according to their own marketing team, are people who never really read the Bible, and was not active in the faith or going to church. I;ve had many new ones ask me to show them where certain scenes were in the Bible, and got confused when I told them they were not. This is a re-telling of the Gospel narrative. But it needs no re-telling. Telling a different story about the way Mary was cured, as opposed to scripture , just erased the awesome message scripture reveals concerning how mary was cured of her demons. Herein lies the issue.

    • @annme7638
      @annme7638 6 місяців тому

@@nycosplayernetworkcospodbe5265 Oh, so you know what groups I’m a part of and who I have heard speak? Tell me exactly where do you get this “knowledge” from? There are millions of fans, so it isn’t exactly “many” who have said that. So, you went to the convention, how way it? Care to share the clip where Dallas said those exact words? I’ve actually seen the clip of Jonathan talking about that woman. She didn’t refer to him as Jesus or worship him a such, he made a point to introduce himself and the whole thing was that she took meeting the actor who portrays Jesus, and who does it quite well I might add, as a sign that God was going to be with her and her husband through a trial that they were going through. And in case you didn’t know, God can and does bring people into our lives to confirm His faithfulness through the hard times. It’s great that people who never really read the Bible or are active in the faith or are going to church are interested in a show about Jesus. That’s exactly what we want, people interested in Jesus. That’s how it works, you draw people to Jesus, they want to know more so they start reading the Bible and going to church, and they get saved, and the angels rejoice. And if you were part of any of the “fan groups” you would know that that is exactly what is happening. You claim they are “telling a different story about the way Mary was cured, as opposed to scripture, just erased the awesome message scripture reveals concerning how Mary was cured of her demons”, well apparently you don’t know scripture, because the Bible never tells how Mary was cured of her demon; it just states the fact that she had been cured of seven demons. So exactly who’s doing the re-telling here? Do you even know what the Gospel is? It’s the good news of Jesus Christ, who He is and what He came to do; it’s not the backstory of the disciples or the Romans. And the Chosen has been spot on with the “Gospel” message. If you actually watched the series and knew the Bible, you would know that. When they have shown the stories from the Bible they have been fully in-line with scripture, even word for word. They have been clear on who Jesus is and what He came to do. They have declared Him to be the Messiah, the son of God, fully God and fully man, the only way for salvation, He is the first and last and He was in the beginning with God, He is the I Am, the Word and He is God, they have shown that He is compassionate, that He has the power to heal, raise the dead, cast out demons and calm the storm, and He has the authority to forgive sins. That my friend is the real gospel message, and that is what saves people and not some imagined backstory for a disciple. They have shown nothing that contradicts scripture or the character of Jesus. The real issue lies with people who don’t actually follow the series or what goes on behind the scenes, yet they think they can come across like they do. And just so you know, we can spot them a mile away.

Thank you for your insights! And saying the Holy Writ is sufficient enough! Concerning the graven image aspect of these kinds of shows, many fans especially women fans, say they see the actors' eyes and face when they pray! Some women have said they hope Jesus looks like jonathan! People can be so fleshy and that is what they want. The concentration on His humanity over His diety is fleshly and easy. Honoring His diety calls on more of us than many want to hand over. Jesus said what is of the flesh is flesh, what is of the Spirit is Spirit, and the true worshippers worship in Spirit and truth! No face of an actor needed!

The series isn't meant to replace the Bible or active reality of living life as a Christian. I like the actors' portrayal of the characters, it helps when I read even more to see it. I think you're being overly critical over something that is blessing a whole lot of people.

He seemed weak, not very smart, and personality wise, not authoritative… I genuinely didn’t respect him. When he was practicing out loud for the sermon on the mount. That did it for me. They tried to make him “too” human. I couldn’t watch anymore after that. Kind of hard to watch something when the main character doesn’t have my respect.

Just because Judas helped Jesus get to the cross, does it make it a good thing that Judas did? No it doesn't, Jesus says it would have been better that he was never born, so this argument I'm seeing from people in comments that the chosen has got me to be interested in Jesus and the bible again does not justify misrepresenting, and on purpose I might add, the word of God and the God of the word, if people took the scriptures seriously, and they were more biblically literate, they would never take these so called artistic liberties with God Almighty. I like to ponder, how would the apostle Paul and or Peter receive these days and respond to what is happening if they were here, it hits home with me when I see people make videos and try to imagine Peter or Paul being okay with it, I don't think they'd be on board with much of what is called Christian these days😢

I wish I would have watched this before I started watching The Chosen, but unfortunately I started watching it at a time where I had left an apostate church, and I had stopped reading the Bible. The positive aspect is it did get me to start reading my Bible, but not for the reason you might think. I saw little things I knew wasn’t there, and tried to see if it actually was in the Bible. When Dallas Jenkins stated that 80% of the script was extrabiblical, I got nervous. When they started setting up a stage and discussed which color wrap Jesus should wear for the sermon on the mount, and also the part where Jesus asked Matthew help Him write it, I almost didn’t watch the first episode of the third season. It was there that I stopped. The selective editing of the sermon really upset me, as did the little flirty scenes, which not only aren’t in the Bible, they distract from any Biblical message you might find.
Yes, it makes you “feel” good, but should we really be following our feelings and emotions?
This last year I’ve really started reading the Bible again, and in all honesty, it is enough. I’ve also looked into other religions, because they are starting to blend. If you look at what is going on at the Abrahamic Family House, three religions that are incompatible are coming together to promote tolerance. The more I’ve dived into religion I’m realizing that there is a counterfeit version of Christianity, and Catholicism doesn’t see Jesus in the same was as true Biblical Christians do. I’d even go as far as to call Catholics Gnostics, who worship the “Queen of Heaven” (see Jeremiah 7 and 44) instead of Jesus. At least the Roman Catholic Church.
We have to be careful to weigh everything against scripture. Not everyone who says, “Lord, Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven. This makes me so sad. Because I realize the reason I have never fit into the charismatic churches I was raised in is because I questioned some of their practices because they didn’t mesh what I was reading with scripture.
I am not currently in a church. I’m finding very hard to find one that teaches the truth, that actually uses the Bible in their Bible studies. But when I do, I will return to church. I’d appreciate your prayers.
This is excellent. Please keep telling the truth in love!

I went back to rewatch it again and saw too much that didn't sit well with me. I couldn't continue rewatching. Instead, I began looking to see what evangelicals had to say about it. The series bothered me with the way Jesus was presented. Some of the words that The Chosen Jesus spoke were from the Book of Mormon. I agree. The series took great liberty in showing a Jesus that has not been revealed to us in scripture. Adding words that Jesus said is demonic. I can no longer endorse The Chosen.

I think sometimes people can get "spooked" out if something is not from the bible that would help them to learn more about God (and I wouldn't judge anyone if they had any reservations) However if you think about it even many christian religions today use different bibles (protestant 66 books, catholic 71 books, etc - along with their different interpretations) So if something helps to "inspire" one to learn more about Jesus that is probably a good thing. I heard the Chosen (for some at least) have made them want to learn more about the scriptures (and Jesus too) so I don't think "He' would dislike that. The apostle Paul himself taught (from the bible) "If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things" So those things mentioned (by apostle paul) could also include good art, nature, good relationships, good books talks, and yes - even movies (like the chosen too) One good gauge is something good or not would be "by the fruits you shall know them) . Anyway food for thought and God bless :)

Here's the thing. Do you rather have a lost person watch the chosen and get introduced to the gospel, and let the Holy Spirit start working on that person's heart, or not?
An unbeliever will find it harder to read the Bible than to watch a tv show. Just look at how many Bibles are printed out every year vs how many unbelievers buy them.
An unsaved person doesn't know the technicalities of a Christianity, and once a person gets saved and receives the Holy Spirit, He will begin the sanctification process and all other things like not worshiping idols etc will begin to make sense.
I agree the show isn't perfect, and for the seasoned Christian many things won't appear 100% perfect, but if it saves one Soul in the process, and the message doesn't depart from the gospel of salvation by faith, I'm more grateful for it than not.

I have watched the Chosen and I found it both very good, and very true to Scripture.
You say you want to argue for the sufficiency of Scripture. That´s good, but the Chosen itself does not want to or claim to add to Scripture. If you would use this to add to Scripture in your own mind, that would be wrong, but since the show expressly says it´s not intended for that, I would say that´s not a problem with the show but in the attitude of some.
The show does portray many events in the Gospels, and when it does, it´s very faithful.
The sufficiency of Scripture is for theology and guidance for life (all you need for salvation and godliness). It does not say other things cannot be good or profitable.
Another objection you brought was the 2nd commandment.
The commandment about images was not given about Jesus after the incarnation but of God in the Old Testament (before the incarnation) and specifically in a worship context. So it might apply if someone used an image from the Chosen, put in on a wall and fell down before it. I don´t think it can reasonably be applied to portraying Jesus in general.
You gave the quote "I am the Law of Moses" as a problem.
First of all, it´s not from the book of Mormon. It is instead, I believe, a summary of many biblical concepts taught by Jesus.
Context matters, in the scene a pharisée warns Jesus that if he does not change they will have to apply the Law of Moses to him (ie kill him for blasphemy)
He responds "I am the law of Moses". In context he challenges the notion that he is in conflict with the Law of Moses, He is instead the embodiment of the Law (in that he perfectly fulfills the Law and that the Law speaks of him in sacrifices etc.) and by attacking him the pharisée now is in conflict with the Law itself.
    Even if they were not your main problems you also made some other points about the director and actors;
    - The guy who plays Jesus is a catholic. But what does that matter since what he says and portrays is the vision of a protestant director? An actor acts, he is not the one deciding what the character says or does.
    - You say the director has said we have the same Jesus as mormons. I have watched many interviews with him and this is simply not true.
What he did say is that many mormons appreciate the show since it is faithful to the Gospels (the Gospels are seen as Scriptures in mormonism as well)
    Please don´t spread falsehoods.
I am not saying I think you should all watch the show, especially if you know you have problem with this kind of media influencing your theology (that you have a hard time keeping these things separate in your mind). But it´s a mistake to make this a general rule, since many christians don´t have this problem and have been richly blessed by the show. And everyone I know that has seen the show says it has made them read the Bible more, not less. It also makes them think more about what the Bible says and what it means. This is a very good thing.
"...and trust that God will work through the means He has ordained." Where does it in Scripture ever say God does not use other means to draw people to Himself? God used miracles in the NT times to draw people to Himself, He has used music, He has used great authors like CS Lewis or Bunyan. Does the Bible ever use the sufficiency of Scripture this way, to tell us not to read or listen to music since the Bible is sufficient? No, it does not. It is a mistaken application.

I remember, as a teenager, wandering around my church one day to find an empty room to sit in, and spotted a drawing pasted up on the wall of a woman holding a smiling baby. I recognized it was supposed to be Mary holding a baby Jesus, and this wave of emotion crashed into me. All my life, Jesus was this figure who always said and did the right thing, and everything about His depictions were so stoic, it was hard to see Jesus as a real living, thinking, feeling human. This little image of Jesus as a baby, laughing in delight at His mother made it 'click' in my head, truly how human He is. Just like all of us, Jesus had favorite foods, things that made Him laugh, all these things that make us unique and alive, but He also managed to be perfect and obey all of The Lord's commandments. He had a life of His own. He could have had dreams of being a grandpa, or owning a shop; anything regular people dream about, and instead, He chose to devote His life to serving us, until inevitably suffering and dying for us.
Artistic interpretations aren't to be taken as scripture. We have to remember when we look at art and interpretation, that it is not the real thing. Like any historical movie about the American Revolution or something, we watch with the knowledge that George Washington wasn't ACTUALLY like that, and of course some of these characters only exist in the movie, not in real life. Likewise, I think they can still be tools to help us make connections and see things in new perspectives.
Perhaps consider what you feel when you watch it. I haven't felt any particularly spiritual feelings while watching it (the first few episodes I've watched), so perhaps it's more neutral in terms of whether it brings you closer to Jesus Christ or not, but it has helped me build a greater appreciation for the sacrifices and difficult decisions made by Jesus and the people who chose to follow Him, and it does do a good job at giving some historical context, for people like me who aren't really familiar with Jewish traditions and the time period, in particular.

I also want to add, that artists can be touched by the spirit, and create something out of a divine inspiration and a pure love for God. Their artwork is a gift and an expression of their faith and love and devotion, and sometimes that can be felt by others who look at the artwork. And think of how precious it is when your child draws a picture for you, even if it is not a perfect drawing, doesn't it still fill you with joy and you want to hang it on the fridge? As children of God, how does God feel about what we create out of love for Him?
Regarding The Chosen, I am very curious to know if the people working on the show were moved by the holy spirit while creating it, or if it is simply people writing a show with no inspired feeling behind it. I'm still trying to puzzle that out, myself. It is a shame if people are gaining their testimony through a TV show without building up a relationship with God outside of it, but if people realize the show is just a show, and seek to become closer to God once the show is long ended, then perhaps it isn't totally a bad thing.
We'll all gladly put the artistic interpretation of Jesus behind us once (and if we're blessed enough) to meet the real Jesus, one day. :)

As a Christian and really liked the Chosen series you guys are pretty spot on. I'm sure alot of people might not like what you guys are saying but I've experienced it myself, when you talked about the "white spaces" or sometimes when I've read the bible I've entered this mental image of characters from the Chosen into scripture to get an idea what they were like as I read.
I think its because the series (as far as bible shows) is so good, production wise. So far is just such a good show that its easy to get drawn to it because we want to be closer to Jesus his life and how he lived in the world that scripture don't fill all those "white spaces" and its more of an experience visually, that we are drawn to more than ink on pages.
Can it be a way to get people to Christ? or closer to Christ? Sure. But we just have to ultimately remind ourselves and others that it is just a show and never a replacement for a sound doctrine church teachings and fellowship and remember it's sculpture alone for our source of who Jesus is revealed to us and not adding any more.

It's a show, not a movie. So yes, so there are some creative liberties taken to flesh out the time slots. That being said, there is a disclaimer in the beginning of the series that tells the viewers exactly this, and encourages them to read the bible for themselves.
When Jesus heals the blind woman and the man with the gimp leg in the series, for instance, this is not an account in the bible, however, we do KNOW that Jesus healed the blind and the lame. So the depiction, though not accurate to the detail, still helps us to visualize what some of those encounters might have been like regardless if they really happened or not.
As long as they are not blatantly deceiving the audience with things Jesus did not do, I really don't see the harm of giving a glimpse of some of the things he "might" have done.
The Pharisees were VERY overly fixed on superstitions and hyperbole, as well.

Matty, I understand your point, but this series does take the artistic license too far.
As they mentioned in this video, when Jesus's character says, "I am the law of Moses." And when he said to Nicodemus in an earlier episode, "What does your heart tell you?" When Peter's character calls John the Baptist "creepy John." Then there's the scene where Jesus is depicted as preparing and rehearsing for the Sermon on the Mount! The Bible never even hints to Jesus having to prepare that sermon. These are just a few examples, and they are not harmless.
It seems like 75 to 80% of The Chosen is fiction, and because of that, there's a substantial amount of the show that just isn't scripturally accurate. I see that as a problem.

Soo... does everyone in the comments feel the same way about the Passion of the Christ and the numerous other Jesus represented films and shows? The Chosen takes liberties the same way that Steven Spielburg did when making Prince of Egypt. But there is always a disclaimer of it. It's not trying to say this is 100% exactly how it went but people trying to lift up christ and draw the world to him. The Chosen has definitely helped me in my walk and made me hunger more for Christ than I had felt in a long time.

The original goal as Dallas stated was to make a good show, not impact peoples lives. Jesus has been around everywhere so I never understood the 'Oh now I see Jesus' mindset of alot of fans. The Gospel is everywhere in a developed nation. Churches, TV, Film, Concerts, Bibles everywhere, what more help do people need! Our early persecuted ancestors did not have all this... how did they stay loyal! The Passion showed the truth of the crucifixtion. Jesus of Nazereth though it has some liberties, is at least mostly scripture on screen. The authentic Jesus has always been in Holy Writ. But i've come to conclude, much of the world, even in the church, prefer TV show Jesus, to Bible Jesus!

I think we are built to want to experience God in his fullness, and because of our human lack, our desperation and exhaustion, people will “buy oil” elsewhere. That alone makes you think of the wise and unwise virgins.
We live in the EVILEST of days this world has yet seen, it’s only going to get worse and very very soon.
We have nothing in this world of value except the gospel. If we have anything “right”, let it be the gospel.
God himself, came down wrapped in flesh, to fulfill the law, to become the spotless lamb, for the sins of the world.
Paying the debt for all sin eternally. He rose from the dead on third day justifying us in the eyes of God. Us, The ungodly.
God doesn’t want us to work, that part has already been done for 2,000 years,he just wants us to spend time with him, and it just so happens that when we do, we can look at the world, and the devil in the face, and smile….bc Jesus Chris IS King and he IS LORD OF LORDS, and his blood say that I’m HIS, and FOREVER WILL BE, and there’s NO THING IN ALL OF CREATION THAT WILL SEPARATE ME FROM THE LOVE OF GOD!!
Come Lord!! Do what YOU do LORD, and save, give life, redeem, restore, and brings us home to be with you while we wait out the storm…
Thank you Jesus for dying for such a wretch as me. Even though I don’t deserve your grace and mercy but I stand in it. Your grace is the only thing that inspires change in me. Your mercy and promise of eternity with you, is the only hope any of us have in this world.

The show could absolutely be leading people to read their Bibles. It's also leading people to sin, though, by creating idols, among other things. Paul says in Romans 6 that God's grace covers all our sins, but he also warns us not to abuse that grace by continuing to sin so God's grace abounds. Christians have the liberty to watch shows like The Chosen if they want, but only if they are mature in discernment and recognize that the show and the Jesus in it are works of fiction.

Respect the maturity of people deciding to watch the show and then become interested in actual scripture. The creators, cast etc have always said time and time again that the show does not replace the Bible. They say time and time again to read the gospels. What the show is, is a dramatic retelling of events. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, and it has reached hundreds of millions of people. Instead of complaining, you would think that people would be happy about that. Yet here we are. Oh well.

I personally think there's a balance to everything. I never liked The Chosen because they constantly go away from God's word and completely make up things. On the other hand, we all influence each and inspire each other with our individual colors God gave to each of us, and we should. Jesus talked in parables and pictures. I understand that the second commandment means we should not bow down and worship images, like the golden calf for example. Last but not least, when you say we should only get feeding through the church, some might accuse you of not keeping the Sabbath in the commandments (not me, but I know of these accusations). So, all I can say is, we Christians need a lot of grace for each other and keep a good balance in everything. The main thing, of course, is to not wander away from scripture and change it...

I have enjoyed almost every episode of The Chosen, and I'll continue to watch it and enjoy it because it is made primarily for entertainment. Maybe some people have a hard time separating that from things they feel religious conviction over, but most of the arguments made against the chosen here can be said for anything. Why paint pictures of Jesus? Why do art of any kind? Why make music? If you can understand that the director is taking liberty in the telling of a story for entertainment purposes, then it's nothing to get bent over. It be a completely different story if they were saying this is how it really was. Or leading people away from reading the bible, or leading people away from Christ. No one can say they only look at Jesus without any presuppositions. If it isn't this show, or modern movies, it's the older movies. Everybody in America has seen Jesus represented in some way, shape or form, outside of scripture. I'd hope everyone is intelligent enough to know the distinction between what scripture reveals about Jesus, and how the modern world interprets it. So if you are going to call people to stop watching the chosen for all the reasons you stated here, then you mine as well tell people to stop supporting every Christian media.

This show presents an interesting theological discussion. My first and biggest objection with your arguments is that this show is not claiming to be the Gospel. It's very clearly designed to point people to the The Word of God. It's a visual depiction of the life of the apostles and of Christ. Which as a Christian, I believe there's no harm in for the most part. You both seem to have the idea that any depiction of Christ is the creation of a false idol, and if that is true then you are not okay with ANY medium that depicts Christ (The Passion, any paintings, statues, etc.) Any Christian should know that visual depictions of Christ through an art form is NOT an image that we WORSHIP ever. If you talk to Christian artists, you'll know that they are using their God-given talents to glorify God (which is a whole other discussion). The part that I agree with you on is the biblical accuracy. When creating a show about the life of Jesus it is important to be scripturally rock solid. In the case of the Chosen they have made some errors and that can distort the true image of Christ. Now should those errors negate the heart of the show entirely along with the cast, crew, and creators? I personally don't think so. It's a show created by humans and we should have grace for error and call it out. If it's not error but an intentional decision with ulterior motives, discernment and warning is necessary. You both made a lot of claims that were not discussed thoroughly enough.

I think the apparent and controversial issue with The Chosen is there is a clear, yet VERY subtle, underlying of ecumenicism, coexistence, and one world religion, which those who are Born Again are not to partake in. It is behind the scenes or behind the veil/curtain. Can we truly separate what seems to be "authentic" to some onscreen from the dangers behind the scenes? Jonathan Roumi, a devout Catholic and Knights of Templar, is heavily promoting the Hallow app and praying the Rosary and using his role to promote error to his fans and supporters who otherwise were not being led astray. What is more heartbreaking is he may be surrounded by protestants and evangelicals who are not sharing the truth with him. I have heard where people who may have been baptists are now praying the rosary due to following him. I am uncertain of the accuracy of that statement, but just knowing that his fans/supporters are partaking in erroneous doctrine unknowingly because this show is about "the authentic Jesus" is very concerning. Ephesians 5:6-11 says, "Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." We are to expose the error.
When I was watching The Chosen, I felt the Spirit of the Lord was allowing for me to discern certain things that just were not right or erroneous, but because I kept trying to focus on the "good," I dismissed what I otherwise would have attended to. As a result, I was personally conflicted and sometimes confused. However, the Lord continued to allow me to discern certain things that would not go away. I was one who admittedly struggled with seeing the actors' faces in my mind when I prayed. I felt confused when Dallas, who is a self proclaimed Protestant, was referring to his producer friends who are Mormons as "brothers" who believe in the same Jesus as he does thereby giving their religion and false doctrine CREDIBILITY. It was also noted in the introduction Scenes of Season 1 of The Chosen, Season 1, Ep 5: “The Wedding Gift” at the 2:40 minute mark the erroneous dialogue, "What are you going to do for your mother for this little TRANSGRESSION, huh?" Why intentionally use the word TRANSGRESSION, when we know Jesus never sinned?
The Word of God warns us about giving heed to seducing spirits. There are so many people with different beliefs involved with PRODUCING AND CREATING this show, i.e. Mormons, Catholics, Atheists, Buddhists, Muslims, etc. with literal doctrines of demons that contradicts the Word of God that it brings confusion. Granted Dallas Jenkins says he is a protestant or evangelical, and that he is not a Mormon or Catholic, YET he calls Mormons and Catholics his brothers thereby giving their false gospels equal standing with the one true gospel.

I think (which may be the whole reason God allowed the show, as well as this podcast, to make it to air...to think) you have to understand that creative liberties were used when watching The Chosen. I guess the danger is really with those who have not read scripture for themselves who automatically accept those creative liberties as gospel (excuse the pun). Really that should always be considered when viewing any religious-based content apart from actual biblical scripture. Same could be said of some tele-evangelists or Christian "motivational" leaders that speak without ever referencing scripture. In fact, we should always compare theological interpretations to what scripture says. I think The Chosen is effective in introducing people to Jesus but I would like to think that their mission is to encourage people to become more interested in pursuing a greater knowledge of Christ, fostering a personal relationship through scripture and ultimately belief and salvation. So sad that so many self proclaiming Christians would rather choose entertainment over God and his word.
The Chosen blasphemies God and goes against his actual word in so many ways.....taking out some important words that the real Jesus Christ said while diminishing his true character.
....and many self proclaiming Christians just eat it all up...no wonder Jesus Christ said that the very elect could be deceived by the antichrist! If it's this easy for these ppl whose a part of this show to deceive the elect it'd really be easy for the antichrist.... and it's no wonder Jesus Christ had said that the way to life is narrow and that he said in Matthew 7 that many will say "Lord, Lord..." proclaiming that they prophesied, cast out demons and done miracles in his name and he'll proclaim "I never knew you, be gone from me you who do iniquity".
So sad that many in America believe that they have to see a visual in order to help them have faith while thousands of our brothers and sisters died for Christ for over 2000 yrs without having any kind of visual of him what so ever! All they needed was his word to have faith....not some actor playing in a costume.
I get it...ppl can learn better in visual for I also liked the visual as well and I'm not saying that that is particularly wrong but why put the basis of your faith in a blasphemous tv show like this? Because the bible is "boring" and too hard to read so watching shows like this is easier? Maybe we shouldn't look for a visual for we wouldn't be much better then those who said to the real Jesus "show us....show us and we'll believe"
We are not doing God any favors by supporting things that's clearly against him! Compare what "The Chosen" say with God's word and you'll find that they are hardly truthful about God's word at all!
Did not Dallas Jenkins say his show is 95% inaccurate? And yet he wants to proclaim that he's showing an "authentic Jesus" and that he's sharing the gospel in truth. No sir you are not!
Many ppl praising Dallas and praising a tv show saying God is blessing it...who is "The Chosen's" mascot?.Satan....they got someone playing Satan to promote their show...oh yeah great choice!
The Spirit of God is the Spirit of Truth and he would never use deceit or lead someone to be deceiving in order to lead ppl to Jesus.
He speaks truth and truth only so how can Dallas and these ppl say they're doing as God says when their lying about his word??
Have you forgotten the warnings about false prophets and teachers that will lead ppl astray? And here you are allowing a show that leads you astray!
Romey sold pics of himself as Jesus and one woman told him that when she thinks of Jesus she thinks of Romey's image..... that's idolatry!
The real Jesus said to the man at the pool of Bethsaida "sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you." In the show they took that out...why?
When James and John asked Jesus if they should ask fire to come down and consume Samaria Jesus said "you don't know what spirit you are of."....in the show they took that out too.. why?
Sermon on the mount....Jesus did not need no help from a imperfect and sinful man....He Has The Spirit of God in Him! Jehovah told Jesus what to say! Why would Jesus ever ask Matthew his opinion???
Calling John the Baptist "crazy John" that's probably counted as blasphemy against the Holy Spirit considering that John was moved by The Holy Spirit.....in the show they even portray John to be a lil crazy.
      Need I go on??
And many of you are ignoring what they're doing and your blindly following them and supporting them spreading lies!
Blind leading the blind and both will fall in the ditch.
Do Not get your doctrine or theology from a show! Quit being lazy and idle and pick up your own bibles!
Many (including today) have died for God's word and the truth and us Americans have put them all to shame by stomping on them with our slothfulness.
They died for the bible in countries where it's illegal to have it....here we have freedom to have it and we can't even take the time to read and meditate on it?
What are you going to do when the bible becomes illegal in USA? Don't think that'll happen? They're already trying to take our rights away bit by bit.. they'll make God's word illegal.....will you fight for truth then or will you cave?..... you'll fight for truth? Really? Your not doing it now!
If your going to put Truth aside for a blasphemous tv show that dishonors God what makes you think that you'll stand for truth when trials come?
Turn away from idols, laziness and this show and go back and read your bibles!

Why are you so concerned with defending.... rebuttling all kinds of herecies out there!!!
    Just preach the Gospel
    And the only Few
    Few
    Few
    Few
    Very few who desire
    The Truth
    Will truly be set free
    Preach the truth
    The finished work
    Only
    When people are trully loved
    They will start maturing
    Loved not in the church
    Not by peopple
    But by Jesus
Then they will become trully free when the truth will set them free from all the garbage they believe in
Why you cant grow!? Because to understand what is 4 you must understand the problem 2+2=4
You must accept basics truths and understand them with your mind sole spirit
Only then new truths will be revealed after you have accepted the
    "
    Total forgiveness"
No more continual positional non sence
    You must embrace
The Truth of the Bad news what happened in the garden? Why spiritual death rained from adam to moses on all humanity who have not
    Sined like adam...
What were the two problems of sin and death
How Jesus has destroyed sin by his death and His resurection brough Eternal emortality of the Spiritual being into play
And how through forgiveness Jesus disrmed Satan from the weapon he held which wss the law,
How Jesus destroyed death by setting aside the power of sin sting to keep you being " in the flesh" how you are no longer Fleshly, you are not Dead- spiritually fead flesh
But you are the Image of heavenly as New adam the Quekening spirit so are his children are Made to be heavenly!
If you are stil in adam you are dead
    If you are in Jesus
You have nothing to do with adams nature
    No
More sinfull evil crucket decieving heart
You have an obidient new heart which is all ready to be loved fed by the spirit!
You have a new Spirit which is infused with Gods spirit..,,
    You are totally new
    If you only knew
Kept looking into the mirror of grace which reflects your new status new nature and you would stop allowing the world devil religion to point you to the LAW the whole Law everything that is written in the book of the law!!!
Not 10 written on stone as Letters that kill condemn show you who you trully are without Gods spirit, without Mercy love shown through Jesus...
    Law killls
Every use of it first second third
Moral seremonial non of this thelogical non sence
    Stop chery picking
God never allowed you to clesify and debate over what was fulfilled what is used to guide a believer
Grace has apeared that teaches Us
    And when we accept
    It
The morning star will shine bright and we are now are lead by the Spirit Truth of what has been finished done !!!
You two do not proclaim the whole truth
    Because if you would
    You would loose your jobs
    Your status
Because if people trully learned the trurh of how Great Hyper Grace is , intentionally using the word hypoo which us used 4 times in NT
It is trully unbelieveble how Great grace is
It is so Great that what was before is nothing at all compared to the Glory that staid with us
    2 corith 3
You will not preach whole truth
Because you have so much baggage
    Theological stuff that overlays overlaps
That you will never be honest
Becauese your afraid that people will sin...
    So what??
They who are trully are regenerate will eventually feel
So miserable in the emptiness of sins lies and fslse promises
But those few that embrace the truth
Willl be so trully free that they will
    Rejoice
    Enjoy
    Proclaim
    Testify
They will shout from the tops of the roof how Great His grace is....
Because everyone who preaches that you keep repenting get more repentence after you sin, because your stil a sinner then that is the license to sin
But when we embrace our new nature
    Identity
    We are freed from sin
    From law
    From guilt
    From condemnation
    Fear lies
    Religion
And people who are trying to make a living of followers😣

Scriptures say, "They have eyes that cannot see, and they have ears that cannot hear..."
It's not a question of impairment. It's a matter of one's intellectual development as one grows to maturity and having the liberty to make choices and decisions according to one's values-system or framework. The Lord God of all creation determines the ultimate outcome - He predestines according to His foreknowledge what the individual person will be. The Lord God is and always will be in control of all things and everything!

Thank you for this episode. I too haven’t watched the Chosen and I was never going to watch the Chosen for many of the same reasons outlined in this episode. I too have a concern for the 2CV’s in the show, plus I have never trusted movie producers to get Biblical stories right.
But you guys highlighted a reason I hadn’t considered and that’s the question what are you getting from the Chosen that you’re not already getting through the Means of Grace? Beautifully drawn out fellas! Amen!

These aren't Hollywood producers, they felt it was a mission to bring the life of Jesus to film. They followed their heart and the response by viewers is the same response Christians have when reading the scriptures. The love, compassion and miracles of Christ touch your soul.

You said it in the first lines, "MANIFEST" tation, meaning a man made production. I am not not here to bash religions of any source, but growing up in a Irish/ Catholic family, I didn't get the full gospel because of all the formalities of the church.

Sorry guys. I'm an independent Hebrew Roots Gentile Christian, yet I am totally a fan of The Chosen. I'm also an art lover, and what I see is a beautiful portrayal of Yeshua painted by Jenkins, Roumie, the cast, the crew and the volunteer fans whose collective art, to me, is nothing short than an act of worship for anyone involved with the project. If that is so, how can I see it then as a violation of 2nd Commandment? (I would like to say to Mr. Moffat, "Does one judge a matter before you hear what the matter is?" You haven't seen it, yet judge? Hmph. Interesting. ) Can you remember what the word "gospel" meant, or have we forgotten that it means "good news" ? I've waited a long time to experience something that expresses a positive view of my God as nothing but a loving creator being, who cares about us so much as to become one of us, do all his marvelous works of healing and restoration he did, and yet suffer as he suffered for us. It's a show. It's art. Beautiful art, attractive art, art worthy of successful fishers of men who benefit the fish in the process by giving them such a vision as to want to know more about him, and not chase them away.

the show gives stories to our Spiritual ancestors with no proof. They were real people. Jesus does not look like jonathan. And for those willing, the Holy Spirit needs no help showing people Christ. In terms of a movie, Robert Powell in Jesus of Nazereth which was true art, speaks words off the pages of text, and unlike chosen is 95% Bible! But therein lies the problem. A show about Jesus full of scripture, and one with condiments of it. Mary of Magdela was not healed in a bar. Other scenes I've had new believers ask me where they are in the Bible, I had to tell them they are not there, They ended up being confused. Jesus said worship in Spirit and truth, not through a TV show. God has established THE WAY, to connect to Him, and its not thru TV. The Person hood of Jesus is out there everywhere so why folks acting like oh now they see Him. They heard and saw Bible Jesus, much different than chosen Jesus.

@@nycosplayernetworkcospodbe5265 Very true, however, they say at the very beginning it is ....a" SHOW" based on true stories....and that the locations , timelines, and backstories are altered for ARTISTIC IMAGINATION sake (basically artistic license)....and I agree. The viewer is encouraged TO READ THE SCRIPTURE FOR THEMSELVES. I generally go much further. (eg just about every contemporary mainstream Christian denomination produces a nativity scene, but Yeshua(/Jesus) wasn't born in a stable in reality. He was born in Bethlehem Ephrathah, one Roman mile east, according to Eusebius, where Migdal Eder, the tower of the flock, is located.) (And I would encourage you to check that out too.) My point being, it is all artistic expression, and not idolatry. Another beautiful show of Yeshua (His real name), was the movie "Risen" with Joe Fiennes and Cliff Curtis playing the role of Yeshua, like Roumie in The Chosen. Definitely not real, however it does convey the spirit of a God that loves us unconditionally, and in every scene they both play their role to get that point across to their audience. I don't know about you, but I am saved by grace alone, not by works, and to know that a loving God is with me, not 50,000 miles away when trouble raises it's ugly head, is very much a comfort to me. I'm sure others will see it the same way as well in these shows, and will encourage them look deeper into His life, and hopefully gain a relationship with Him, rather than having a thought they'll be rejected by Him, because that's not what He's about.

I have watched all seasons. Mr concern with The Chosen is how they put questionable words in the mouth of Jesus. Mingling the truth with fiction. Having Jesus act in ways that are not biblical. Every season I find myself questioning the message of The Chosen. And that is solely because I know scripture. Imagine someone who has never read the Bible! They are receiving a false doctrine.

The Chosen was designed to tell the gospel story thru the eyes of the disciples. So they inherently ask a ton of questions about all aspects of the scriptures and their character traits to derive the script for the show. It was never meant to replace scripture in any way but to tell the gospel story in a different way. Asking all the questions does project into the story but I have not found any heretical theology in the script. Are they perfect - no. Are these guys perfect - no but I find no fault with them in making sure the gospel is not corrupted. But they and the chosen are trying to tell the gospel story to anyone who would consider the message of christ as lord and savior of their lives. I do support the chosen because I have seen lives changed from it to Yeshua ha Mashiach :)

I have watched Season 1@2 a few times. And am looking forward to seeing season 3. I'm sorry if their are those out there that don't like it. This in my mind makes Jesus a human being as He was in the beginning of his ministry. Even after starting the healing and miracles He was still a human a man. Until He is Crucified, dies, and rises then ascended into Heaven. He was a Man. Regardless of the programs about Jesus, NOTHING is 100% there are scenes and content that's not exactly what the Bible says.

Why keep harping on this 'he's a man' proclaimation, as fans do, i cannot understand. In the Bible Jesus makes claims He enjoys eating and drinking! Does that not sound like a man? Scriptures reveal His humanity, but sorry His divinty saves, and all humanity needs to get use to the idea of bowing to Him. God does not place His divinity above His humanity. Jesus is before all!
