@@stuffsethmakes David is a cool guy and I hope this works out in your favor. He always tries to make up for anything that goes wonky. Like a true woodworker. 😆
i’ve been using a laser for 5 years while in architecture school, and i gotta say something…THIS ROCKS!! i have never thought of this being such an effective use for a laser. thanks for inspiring me yet again!
Great job! Hopefully Seth understands the honest mistake! Good to the credit and link to his etsy.👍 I have the same laser and this has really opened my eyes to other possible projects!! Thanks for doing this project and showing what's involved!
I used a laser in my job, ( it would take a 3m x 2m perspex sheet ). Lasers are fantastic machines. Did a lot of work for model makers. 400w power. Love your videos.
In execution this idea is relatively simple, but coming up with the basic idea, then deciding to use the dowels for alignment, cutting the wood "veneer" (that's not a veneer)... all of that stuff, sir, is ingenious.
Being a humble retiree, I would use the waste you are holding at 4:19 for an art piece, but that's just me. Very impressive project, but laser stuff is beyond me. The only laser work I can handle is like when I had my kids chase the red dot around the room.
Your camera is more accurate than ours. There is software available through x-tool to calibrate them but there are no clear instructions. I've read that this is a problem for other users as well and the solution is just to figure out how far off it is and then try to compensate for it by moving your design within the workspace. I will probably have to contact support to get the issue resolved. Great video. I watched one of your older videos the other day and realized you are somewhat local to me. ( i live in Morenci Mi. Right on the border) I didn't know about Ken craft until I watched that video. I'm going to have to make a trip and check it out.
I have 2 d1pro machines and one has the extensions. I cut templates out but you have just opened up a whole new avenue. Loved it. And the registration points, genius
Question - how repairable is the laser? I have a glowforge plus that I already once had to buy their refurb and fingers crossed 🤞🏻 nothing happens again soon but it frustrated me to no end that you can't really service a glowforge (I know there are some forums out there that help a bit but nothing official). Anyway, point being if and when something happens I'm not giving glowforge anymore money and I want a laser that I can buy and swap parts to get it back up and running and wondering if the xtool allows this (ie sells the parts and the machine comes apart)?
Hi 👋, I thought you said you had another channel I’ve just tried looking for it cannot seem to find it. Can you send me a link please, Phil from the moulin
What an awesome video (and final product!). Very clever use of your laser, and a very inspiring project. I have the xTool D1 Pro, and it's fantastic, but after making tons of boxes and signs and simple engravings, I'm kinda antsy to do something else. It couldn't make anything at this scale very easily, but the techniques you used have my brain cooking up ideas.
This feels like the end of a series: 1. Can you make fine furniture out of plywood? 2. Can you make your own plywood? 3. Can you make fine furniture out of making your own plywood?
Hi 👋 , that looks like a great machine, and a nice job paper/table stand, from the 60/70s , you didn’t say how long it took to make the legs, 🦵, 😂, stay safe, keep up the great work, look forward to seeing hearing your next territorial, I think I have to have a look at your other UA-cam channel, I’ve been thinking about buying a laser machine, but I’m not very computer literate, give me a piece of wood and I will make something out of it, even it’s just sawdust 😂, Phil from the moulin France .
Having just finished the video (I was halfway through when I made my jovial jesting comment about the laser saws), and I'm both blown away by the quality of this project, but almost equally impressed by the laser itself. I've already thrown a link to the video into the slack channel for our maker space, I'm hoping to convince the rest of the membership that it's a tool worth getting for us.
Man, I just love your channel. I _know_ I ran across it long ago, but for some reason I hadn’t subscribed - and the darn UA-cam algorithms kept me away. So glad to be catching up :)😊 Also love your disclaimer about repeated cuts. This freaks me out on the daily!
I have the Xtool D1 pro 20W (diode rather than CO2 with the extended rails - there's a 40W too) - also a great modelling and woodworking tool and can eat 6mm ply (never use it for anything thicker although it can). Only downside is the diode's inability to cut translucent/clear/white materials - but _much_ cheaper than the full CO2 with cabinet etc. for a similar outcome. Good project BTW !
I have the same, except not the pro... I get the most use out of it in making router templates. The 20w will cut 3/8" pine like butter. I think 1/2" is the thickest I've cut with it..... well, I did try 3/4" once and started a small fire.
The S1 is very much like the P2 here, but a diode. It also has surface mapping and is enclosed. It doesn't have a camera, but you can very accurately mark areas to cut via a visual mapping system the shows the current position and mapped areas in the software. I actually prefer this method.
I just bought a Thunder Bolt laser. As soon as i learn Lightburn, I will definitely want to try something like this! I did manage to cut a square last night! 😂 I think I may need to buy a more clamps!😁
you can never have enough woodworker youtubers telling woodworkers that you can never have enough woodworkers telling you you can never have enough clamps
Lightburn support is very rudimentary at the moment. For example neither the cameras nor the material thickness measuring can be used, but the LB crew is working on it.
Fun video! When you were debating where walnut comes from, I remembered a question that has confused me. Some foods are labeled that they may contain peanuts or tree nuts. I recognize that peanuts are not tree nuts, but I struggle to think of other nuts that are not tree nuts. The only nuts I can find that don't grow on trees are DOUGHNUTS. What am I missing
Super interesting application of the laser! I thought you were going to do some sort of fit-together mostly hollow construction. Like ribs and such to support a skin.
Cool build, and you really could not tell that it was made with the laser. Not that it matters greatly, but you can’t tell. One question about milling your own walnut. Did you use it right away, or did you leave it for a day after to see if it would warp or bend? I guess it would be better to glue it right away correct?
Looks ace but for 4 and a half grand you could just get all the tools to do it traditionally and have a chunk of money for wood left over! I would love one though!
Okay, I know I'm being that ass here, but it's got to be said... Love that new laser planer, laser jointer, the laser miter saw... The Band saw might actually be the one that could be made laser... Two.lasers, focused right at each other, one up, the other down... Just saying, it technologically might be possible. (Ya, I know, the laser miter saw is actually even more feasible... But let's be honest, the laser is basically just a CNC laser scroll saw.) Anyways, 😂 love those laser tools you found! 😅
Me, I'd see if I could etch /cut thicker wood to a reasonable depth, then use a band saw /jig saw to rough cut and a trim bit router to finish the piece.
Great demo of stretching the bounds of what you can do with these tools. It's not all Live/Laugh/Love signs. Quick question: if I don't have a laser, can I do this with my CNC? 😁 Did I detect a new track or two on this one? Thanks for sharing!
Are you going for a punk Santa look? The beard is getting a bit shaggy! 😂 awesome project! 👍 thanks for the general review of the tool. I really want one, but don’t have the money or space, or computer to work with. But maybe in the future…
