My usual tiny prime for the past 45 years that is always in the camera bag can be replaced by it. As well, it will replace the (Z9) body cap too to make the camera always has a lens on it and ready to shoot right out of the bag. Also, I have no issue with the 26mm focal length since I skipped buying the Z 28 but the Z 40. Of course, the availability of both the lens and fund for it are the major concern at this time. 🙂
As far as buying it to shoot with, given its higher price and lower performance... NO, unless one requires a pancake lens.

Another interesting thing is the timing of this release. It seems Nikon is planning to declare significant new product/s soon. Would one be an entry or mid level, street and fun body? Maybe... Or not. It's all speculations. We'll just need to be patient.

Given that I don't have Nikon (actually I have my brother's D50 and D7100) but Panasonic and Fuji. I have Panasonic's pancakes used on the GH series. Their use is above all in the street (especially with the GX9) and on the gimbal by DJI, Manfrotto, Moza, Zhiyun and on drones due to its small size and weight which facilitate stability.

26mm deals with shadows better, has smoother contrast, has smoother color transitions and is really soft/easy on the colors themselves out of camera, producing more pleasing colors out of the box, leaving you with less stuff to deal with in post. I don't shoot with wide angle lenses but I do try all the new lenses and if I were to buy a 20-30mm lens, it would be the Z 24mm over both the Z 26mm and 28mm.

I picked the 40mm over the 50mm due to it being noticeably smaller. I will go on 6-8 hour hikes with my camera and weight matters. Because of that I was looking forward to the 26mm as an easily stored backup lens when I want something wider than 40mm. If it goes on sale I will probably still pick it up, but I was hoping it would be lighter and closer to the 28mm in price.

It's a bit pricey if compared to the 28 indeed, but since I have the 28 I can wait. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets some decent discount at one point.
Really would like this on the z30, together with the kit zoom. Perfect combo at home in my office bag which I carry all times. However, there's a DX 24 on the roadmap, slightly larger, but perhaps a bit faster (1.8?) and cheaper, too.
Where it really would shine is on a z3 kind of camera, a z30 with FF sensor.
Yes, I like to have all those options, and might end up with all 3 at one point.
I hope there will be more of it, one even wider (18-20mm), one longer (60-90mm), compact, 2.8 or 3.5.
Yes, there are other lenses which perhaps more people would like to have seen prioritized, but then perhaps this has to do with what they can currently manufacture more easily and what not.

However, the Fx lens goes on both Fx and Dx bodies. However, what's really missing in my opinion for this 26er is a body to shine on - a Fx version on the z30. I would love such a 'z3', then that little 26er on it!
Perhaps in a year or two, once Nikon has redone the z50/z6/7 to III and launched a z8 and a z70. I can wait, no problem.

I think the 28 f2.8 Z is a lovely lens, and will not be getting rid…heck, I still have my 28mm f2, f2.8 and f2.8 pancake ai lenses which I still use with my F film cameras on the regular. Part of why I like the 26mm is its very close to 40mm on my Zfc. Basically a pancake normal lens. To me, if you are on a budget, absolutely makes no sense to buy 26 over 28. Yeah, it does seem like a niche release. Personally, I would have much rather seen it the size of the lens plus the included hood/filter thread accessory with fully internal focus and a quieter focusing motor rather than this. Getting it as small as possible doesn't seem worth those compromises. I also would have rather seen the 28mm with a metal mount and a touch better optical quality rather than splitting features like they did. I have the 28 and it's fine, but would have paid a bit more for a better version of that lens to start.

For the frustration part, I can understand, but I think that Nikon will be releasing another body perhaps in the next month or so, and if it is in fact our "Z8" we have been hoping for, it's possible the 200-600 (which has also been long awaited) will be released around the same time, as both seem to sort of go together in some respects. It is rumored the 200-600 (if it is in fact that, and not something like a 100-500 or 200-500) is not going to be the typical S-lens (so possibly a variable aperture and cheaper build possibly but with "decent" optics) and the Z8 will be somewhat of a watered down Z9 so two pieces for the higher-end enthusiast market. I think Nikon also realizes that the Z II's are not quite viewed as prime-time sports cameras and so they decided to wait. The pro shooters are likely just going with the fast long telephoto primes (the 400's, the 600 and/or the 800 -- and are likely shooting a Z9) so they likely won't be as interested in the 200-600 or a Z8. But I think once Nikon does release the "Z8" or something similar, and the 200-600, then they'll circle back on things like the 24mm DX Z and a few other things (perhaps a 70-200 f/4, although there are rumors of a 70-180 2.8 to go with the 17-28 and 28-75 lenses, although again, that might be similar to what Tamron already has for the Sony E mount). But anyway, I feel that we have some good things coming this year from Nikon... one, possibly two bodies, and a long telephoto zoom. We already got the 85 1.2 and we might even see a 35 1.2 I believe as well (hopefully, although I won't buy one). Plus there were further rumors of even a 135 1.8 Z lens too. So I think if people can be a bit more patient, good things will come. I think Nikon has changed their attitutde towards product releases and are in most cases, going more with a "well through out, but perhaps less frequent" releases. And they're clumping releases together instead of doing them individually, like releasing the 85 1.2 and 26 pancake at the same time, versus separately. I suspect a Z8 (and even a high-end "Z80" and the 200-600 will be released relatively close to eachother as well since they likely will go together).

With $500 price tag it's DOA. A few people who want to pay that much for such low spec lens already got the lens shipped. I'm sure, Nikon will keep discounting this lens all the way to $300 before they get a positive response from the market.

It was ONLY made because of the vast, vast, vast number of people complaining that the Z line wasn't serious because it didn't have a true pancake lens. Why they wanted it? I have no idea aside from it being the current fad.

    Nikon's pancake, huh, yeah
    What is it good for?
    Absolutely nothing.

Let me say it like this, if the 26mm came out instead of another more crucial lens (for example a 70-200mm f4), then I would be frustrated. But that's not how it works, fortunately :)
I have been considering the 28mm, but not sure whether I wanted a 24mm instead and then a 35mm to complement it. I also wanted something compact, so with the 26mm being that wider, I feel I can better defend getting a 35mm as well :)
