Hey Joe, As a Jamaican raised amongst rastafarians (my brother is a rastafarian priest. Rasta is for everybody. It is important to remember that it has a spiritual or faith based root. However, as long as you don't call it 'korean knots' or something else and you give credit to its origin its not cultural appropriation its cultural appreciation! Dr Dread clearly appreciated the culture so no worries!!! It looks good on you! One Love!
I just love the fact that the barber was inspired by Dennis Rodman with all of his crazy hairstyles back in the days! Dennis Rodman inspired a kid somewhere in the middle of Korea. There was, initially, a quiet awkwardness. I think Alena is a type A personality/extrovert who really commands a space. Joe is kind of quiet and subdued and they maybe were thinking, wow, his wife is outgoing, friendly and sociable…not who they probably envisioned his wife to be for this quiet man. What I immediately thought was, they have no idea their history of knowing each other since high school and the kids they share.

The way she describes her characters is so genius, subtle and natural. Her writing does not "scream", "This character is Asian and Black", or "This character is Latinx and white", or whatever the mixture is. The descriptions just emerge from her words. Your family is what I imagine when I read Octavia E. Butler. Here are a few titles: "Xenogenesis", "Adulthood Rights", "Imago". There are lots more, but these three have very interesting looking characters. I love the way you support each other in your individual desires for yourself. Now, that is unconditional love!

But love how you embrace new ideas. after they permed the hair, the next would be to use the eco gel along with a tail comb, section the hair just as how they permed it and form the same patterns but with the use of the gel and comb

Well this has become the younger generation in Korea, similar now in Japan. Social/Cultural norms do shift as it seems with each generation...I've noticed this as well.

Joe I gave you props for stepping outside your comfort zone. Getting a perm to change your texture and curl pattern to 4c is your only path to having hair that can lock. The kids seemed stunned, but I think it will grow on them
My husband has been growing his locs for over 20 years now. They are at his waistline. It is a commitment. I do faux locs on my hair because I'm always changing styles. I love them on Joe looks great ❤
Honestly this is what life is all about, having fun, exploring cultures and just being decent to each other 🫶🏽 I’m glad joe got to have fun with his hair and just be silly. ❤ Edit- I like the locs, for me when I do faux locs I love a messier look so they were to neat for me but it works for joe
I think Joe’s hair looks great! The hair will look better as it gets older because the frizz will give a more natural look and blend with the roots. Their are a variety of different lock extensions but I’m not sure if they have those options there.

Some people are commenting saying they hate us but love to appropriate our culture. In Joe's case he doesn't have that mindset, neither do those others in that barbershop or they wouldn't decorate with so many afrocentric items in their shop. Nothing wrong with admiring and emulating other cultures. The problem comes in when a culture appropriates and pretends like they invented something that they stole from another culture like Kim K. for example tried several times like doing her hair in cornrows acting like it was her invention, and trying to patent her waist cinchers and call them Kimonos. Or the Tic Toc girl who stole a black girl's dance moves and got rich off of copying her video.That's when it's disrespectful, AND appropriation.
The look is becoming to Joe. Alena made it easier for him to accept his new look. I got my hair cut when my grandson was about 3. He wouldn't come to me for a long time. Accepting change can take time. Enjoy you all.

My husband has been growing his locs for over 20 years now. They are at his waistline. It is a commitment. I do faux locs on my hair because I'm always changing styles. I love them on Joe looks great ❤

Edit- I like the locs, for me when I do faux locs I love a messier look so they were to neat for me but it works for joe

I think Joe’s hair looks great! The hair will look better as it gets older because the frizz will give a more natural look and blend with the roots. Their are a variety of different lock extensions but I’m not sure if they have those options there.

Some people are commenting saying they hate us but love to appropriate our culture. In Joe's case he doesn't have that mindset, neither do those others in that barbershop or they wouldn't decorate with so many afrocentric items in their shop. Nothing wrong with admiring and emulating other cultures. The problem comes in when a culture appropriates and pretends like they invented something that they stole from another culture like Kim K. for example tried several times like doing her hair in cornrows acting like it was her invention, and trying to patent her waist cinchers and call them Kimonos. Or the Tic Toc girl who stole a black girl's dance moves and got rich off of copying her video.That's when it's disrespectful, AND appropriation.

The look is becoming to Joe. Alena made it easier for him to accept his new look. I got my hair cut when my grandson was about 3. He wouldn't come to me for a long time. Accepting change can take time. Enjoy you all.
