On this episode of Electrifying, we take the brilliant MG4, and pit it against the upstart Ora Funky Cat. We’re keeping it simple: two electric hatchbacks at the more affordable end of the price scale, only one winner.
Both are electric, five-door, five-seat hatches that offer very similar things on paper. In the white corner we have an MG4 SE Long Range, which costs £28,495 (at time of filming). In the red corner, we have the Ora ‘First Edition’ Funky Cat - the only version available at the moment, which is priced at £32,995.
Join Nicki and Tom as they pitch the MG4 and Ora Funky Cat together for the first time. Which would you choose? Let us know in the comments below.

Ah, It all makes sense now.
When i first saw the funky cat in China and the price (In China) i thought i love it, hope it comes to the UK, it will be a big hit.
The long range (not the UK one) was about $12000, i thought a 1000 shipping 1000 RHD 3000 tax, so $17000 add $3000 as its the UK, convert to £ £16.666.00 So with price gouging £20,000.
When it arrived it was the short range, no heated seats (Really need this for an electric car) and £32,000.
I thought at the time, how the hell are they going to sell this car with the range and spec it has for 32k and the answer is simple BMW is involved.

Thanks for yet another really entertaining video! I think you hit the nail on the head near the end when you said exactly what I've concluded - the Ora Funky Cat we've got is not the Ora Cat that we were led to believe was coming our way. It's still cute and I love the bright interior, but it's too expensive and doesn't offer any extras to justify the higher price. Perhaps the next version of the MG4 will offer some more "funky" interior options!!!

I really do appreciate the Funky Cat. It has that retro bubble vibe without being a knockoff (some people say so, I don't agree at all!) of others. The options for the interior are such a breath of fresh air on the European car market where all interiors are grey or black, we don't even have beige anymore. My odd curiosity about the Ora (and other Chinese cars in general) is why do they put the badge of the parent company on the back? Wouldn't it be odd if Porsche's had "Volkswagen" across the trunk as well as Porsche? Or if Jeeps said "Stellantis" on the trunk. Seems counterproductive to building branding.

I think the Ora Funky Cat looks a bit like the Genesis gv60 in terms of interior, in that it has that retro futuristic look and a lot of attention to detail. On the outside it reminds me a lot of a cross between a mini and a Fiat 500. It does look very premium, and also quite feminine.

Many thanks for this; the perfect review for me as these were the two cars that were at the top of the list to replace my first EV, an eGolf that was leased and due to be handed back in Dec 2022. I sat in the Funky Cat at Fully Charged Live, loved the look and feel of it and had my name down for the test drives that were supposed to begin in September. However, when the first edition was announced the combination of worse than expected spec (I was after 200+ range) and higher than expected price (and delay to arrival until the New Year) nudged me in the direction of the MG4. I managed to get my name down for one of the first batch of MG4s and had mine now since October (SE long range like the one reviewed). 4000 miles in and I'm very happy with the choice (even happier after seeing this). The MG4 performs very well on the road, is a good motorway cruiser and has a good charging curve on rapids (outperforming its spec as it routinely goes up to 140kW). There are a couple of things that are not quite as refined as the beloved eGolf, but that it turns out is a great electric car, hampered just by its range. Thanks again, great two-hander and Happy New Year to the team.

Great first model for Funky cat to sell over here, looking like a mini with an old leaf's rear end then a fiat 500 interior. I mean it is getting everyone talking, so I guess it's doing a good job for the brand.

The Funky Cat looks good and the interior is undoubtedly higher quality and more interesting than the MG4. That's where the good news ends, the boot is a joke for a car this size, small with a high load lip. It's at least £5k too expensive for an unknown brand. If they had launched as the cheapest EV in class with a cool interior and interesting looks, it would make a good case. As it is, the MG4 Trophy has all the toys, more space and a better drive for less money. The MG4 SE SR is £6k less and still has a bigger battery. Ora have botched the launch of their brand

The longer range Cat is already on sale in Asian markets along with massage front seats and sunroof, but the showstopper is the boot - way too small for a family car. Great reviews - The Ora is nice but more aimed at women I think as it's definitely more girlie like a designer handbag inside - where as the MG4 will probably appeal more to males with the dark interior & sharper styling - it shows with the reviewers too - She likes the curvy designer handbag & He likes the more edgy design, less loud interior car. I like both but the Ora's price needs to be a few grand lower especially with that smaller battery, because let's face it EV's are pretty much all the same (washing machine motor bolted to a chassis with a battery & some sort of ipad to control your heating etc.. Dual washing machine motors if you think your a bit fancy & feel the need to get to the speed limit just that little bit quicker🤷‍♂) & the main thing seems to be Battery size & range for most people so yep the Ora should be cheaper than the MG.......... but.. it's a designer handbag on wheels so they've priced it higher on purpose as they know women will pay that bit more for the way it looks - good marketing really 👍👍 Personally I'd go for the longer range MG... hell.... I'd buy a Citroen AMI if it had a 40Kwh pack & a decent heater 🤣🤣 range is most important to me not looks or how fast 😎

The Funky Cat has a very cheap leasing option too. Perhaps, there are more MG dealers (many ex-Rover) and thus this is part of the reason.

Some people prefer FWD (Ora Funky Cat) over RWD but the key takeaway is they didn’t compare with the GWM Ora Long Range which has 420km (261mi) range on the WLTP cycle. So no room for a set of Golf clubs in the Ora, but just about possible in the MG. But for us oldies who prefer the higher cabins of an SUV for entry and exit of a vehicle, the Ora wins on that one.
If the MG had the styling of the Ora Cabin it would definitely win
If the Ora had the range and room of the MG it would win.
