I'm definitely adopting the 6 watches per day traveling system to all my games, it works with my foraging tables. And there's definitely more here that will become part of my DM repertoire! Knave 2E rocks!
I will never play Knave and Maze Rats, they are too simple for me and my table, but it backed them both on the Kickstarter because they are JAM PACKED with great tables and interesting rules ideas to use in my other d20 games. I love Ben’s ingenuity. Great review!
It really is a great game on its own but I've been using the tables and some of the rules for The One Ring, SWADE, Warhammer Fantasy, basically anything with even a hint of fantasy. Such an awesome book with so many great ideas packed into a tiny package
side note: my opinion of course Intelligence is the knowledge gained from learning about something, Wisdom is the experience gained from using that knowledge... :)
I read through the book and a fanmade rulebook, and with those plus this video, im ready to start my big solo Knave campaign. Im new to the whole OSR thing and this video was super well-narrated, very helpful!
Great review. I am very happy with my purchase of Knave. I would have liked an index of tables as I have found that finding them based on context is a little hit or miss. Similarly, after having played around with them for a while, some way (perhaps also in an index) of showing which tables reference other tables would be handy. I'll probably make the resource myself and post it to my blog at some point. I think the system is great and is very lean without feeling like it can't handle specific situations that come up at the table.
A well structured video my friend, and this is one of those books that I might consider the hard copy over the pdf. The quality and thought put into it is fantastic.
@@DMTalesTTRPG fantasy world that's in the past decade hit their own industrial revolution , it's got cotton-gins and basic steam & coal power but nothing like crude oil or similar, they also haven't found enough gun powder to allow experimention past 15/16 century fire arms and Canon technology but it pops up here and there . The main focus I have right now is pretty much THE city for the area of both industry and influence (that's akin to a 1960s Detroit or late 1800s San Francisco )and it's surrounding area where my main focus . It's got a colonial element as this is like if there was a Canada sized continent between Europe, Africa and the Americas that didn't have any settlers on it until their version of the mayflower went there, at least that's what they believe as the surface is clear. Campaign I'm making is about the poltical intrigue and the reclaiming of the city after a massive cataclysm , it's probably something I'll run for my friends and maybe down the line make it it available .
Awesome tables, definitely will be using them as inspiration in my games regardless of the system! System is not bad but I'm more looking towards games with class nowadays I hope I will be able to GM some Lamentations of the Flame Princess (I might give access to alternative classes such as the ones from Sword & Wizardry Complete Revised or Hyperborea 3E) one shot or more fairly soon and those tables will be gold for improvisation

classless systems are always more interesting. if you're willing to try it and be creative. class based system are more concerned about WHAT your character is. while classless systems are more about WHO your character is. your class based fighter can only progress in a predetermined way, there are options along the way but they have to follow that pattern, if your fighter wants to delve into magic they must level up and take a secondary class or subclass to achieve the goal of magic. mean while a classless system is about your character progressing their story, your fighter begins as a standard fighter but over the course of their adventure they may delve into magic and that can be achieved without a whole level up, and that classless character if they work hard enough they can possibly become just as good if not better with magic than a mage. their story and how it shapes WHO they are is more important.
There's already an actual Ampersand RPG btw, and it's not D&D. Never heard of it? Me either, until just now. They've been on yt for 4 years, and they've got 4 subscribers. I was gonna snarkily suggest I use that as my rpg name, but now that I see somebody else already tried and failed, so I'll just move on.
Ive been using this book a while now and I've been having one problem with it. Quickly finding the right table to use. I look at the index and yea no, thats not helping lets just flip through. Its the only downside I've found so far
@@DMTalesTTRPG i agree. Aldo what im trying to say is that even with the index of this book, a lot of times i cant find the table im looking for from just reading this index. Then i flip through the book. Its a bit frustrating but minor. The reat of the book is great even for its tables alone, perfect for combining with mythic 2e
Great review! I picked this up through the Kickstarter as well but haven't had time to go through it in as much detail as you did. Now I'll know the parts I want to pay particular attention to. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
I can’t wait to run it!
This sounds really cool and I love that a lot of the mechanics give you quests and even campaigns to go on that is such a great idea 💡
Yes!
Knave is one of the largest inspirations for the creation of my own game. Love it, looking forward to getting my copy of 2E!
It’s pretty cool.
Wait, wait, wait! I can be a traveling potion maker? With monster parts? My dream of being my own potion shop can come true!
Why don’t you comment on the monster hunter cult channel on the discord?

I am a fan.
Check out Forbidden Lands too, it has basically the same thing
And I have a review of it.
The volume of tables alone in the Knave book has my attention; thanks for going into details about the game!
So many tables!
Great coverage over the system. The layout seems nice, like the front and back inside covers having that important info.
It looks like a lot of fun.

It’s a,along how they are set up.
Tiny correction about combat: On a roll 21+, the player may choose to *succeed* (not *attempt*) at a free combat maneuver.
Ahhhh, YES. Thanks!
Knave 2e is the perfect fantasy game! Easily my go-to for the genre.
Very cool. Thanks for watching!
Love the title of this... Dare to be Classless. :D
I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night so the odd puns were floating around in my head.

Very nice critique.
Really thorough review, even down to the font and layout choices. Great stuff! Subbing for more
Thank you! I do enjoy examining how layouts work!
Came here looking for Knave content. You got my subscribe when you reviewed the layout. Love it!
Thanks!

It is pretty cool. Really short-but that’s a feature, not a bug.
@@DMTalesTTRPG Exactly!
Thanks for a nice review. Really interested in this game, and would love to port some of the ideas into my own game.
It’s worth checking out.
On my shopping list, thanks 😎
Hope you enjoy it!
@@DMTalesTTRPG got my copy. Love it. Such a wonderful distillation of D&D and a lovely book full of useful tables.

I’m kind of enjoying classless play but the hobby is wide!
Savage worlds fantasy companion is excellent for adding more depth to a SW fantasy game. The OSE books are terrific, Shadowdark is AMAZING.
@@DMTalesTTRPGI agree a lot but the last games I GMed were Electric Bastionland ones so classless is cool too but not my jam rn

I’m in my third month of running this game. It is as fun to hack as it is to play.
Very cool! I’m looking forward to running this and Into the Odd over the next couple of weeks.
10:34 So you could say that a wide repertoire of potion recipes is, in a way, proof of a hero? I'll see myself out, thank you.
