Aside from crying from laughing at how tragic it is while Zefrank's soothing voice narrates us through loss and stifled dreams, the very ending made me feel sorry for the actual bug. Damselfly crawls back into the muck. She just had her wings chewed off, and after wandering around the chestnut until she realizes she won't be able to fly, she returns to the only home she's known to try to survive, where she presumably drowns since puberty just kicked her out of that habitat. I was not expecting this level of emotion while I waited for my shower to heat up.
I hadn't thought about it that way at first, but you're right. Adult damselflies no longer have the gills they had as nymphs and would promptly drown if they tried to return underwater. Damselfly's big dreams about soaring away and becoming a star ended when the dragonfly who she thought would be her agent used her and then dumped her when he was no longer interested, leaving her to die in the swamp she'd tried to fly away from. Truly, a tragedy for the ages. :(
It's such a beautiful tragedy. I watched in horror as its fresh wings got eaten while we heard the beetle's longing thoughts, thinking the damselfly flying free in the sky.

That was heart wrenching... just a bit of context changes everything about this clip of nature. The poor damsfly going back into the swap to die was so painful to watch
Everybody saying this is wholesome while not realising that that other damselfly at the end ate off it's new wings so it's definitely going to die. Beetle wondering about damselfly his whole life not realizing he probably died the very next day and never once got to fly. Honestly i was sure the beatle was going to eat it, but it was a nice twist at the end. Still horrifying though.
Fun fact... The way you tell the difference between dragonfly and damselfly is... dragonflys wings are out perpendicular to its body while at rest where as damselflys are along its body while at rest.
This hits way too hard for what I was expecting to be a quick midnight laugh. It felt like you just stabbed my heart where it hurts, then twist the knife. I love my millipede, but this story made me think of what happened to the damselfly I left.
i thought the same ... oh fate have its ways for sure . we just tend to hope that our current is the best outcome because we humans fear the unknown the most ! ...
This tears my heart out, such aching beautiful tragedy in such a small places. I never want watch it again, every time I think of this video it makes me want to weep
"How beautiful things must be from the sky, he thought. Everything looks better small and far away," just DESTROYS me. How Damselfly's rejection must have stung Beetle. How he loved Damselfly enough to still think her, to look up at the sky or at his phone, aching but nevertheless happy knowing that she is someplace where she can see beautiful things and be the best version of herself she can be and finding some semblance of warmth from that. And then that small moment of love (because what is grief but love enduring), juxtaposed against the harsh reality of Damselfly's wings (the thing she left Beetle for, the thing that was going to finally make her whole) being eaten and brutalized, and Damselfly dying? Returning to the muck, alone, without even Beetle there to welcome her back? Fucking brutal, man. I love ZeFrank's True Facts series, but it's always these short, poignant videos like the Human Test series or Teddy's Operation that really gets me.
Everything looks better small, and far away. Don't look too closely at life or the sheer agony of mere existence could wash you right away. ...still. It has its moments. ❤
dude this was like if Mr. Rogers had told sad depressing stories to children expecting funny stories. Im not complaining tho, this was actually quite beautiful as poetry.
How the hell did you just break my heart AND inspire me at the same time...With a Vidya about a beetle and a damselfly!? You sir are a MasterCraft at what you do. A comedic David Attenborough and a gift to the platform.
That was ... harsh and had a lot of profound meaning. Nymph finally emerges ready to transform and take flight but before it can fully harden an adult comes and destroys its only chances for survival. And so the damselfly crawls into the muck not having any other option.

Wow… the beauty and simultaneous horror of this short clip is astounding. After it is over I don’t know what to feel most - but I can appreciate the video as a masterpiece of theater.
The beautiful, peaceful music and the soothing voice awoke a primal fear inside me. I knew there was something dark on the horizon, but felt soothed at the same time. Like a lullaby a spider would sing to a fly before eating it's face.
Storytelling to absolute perfection. From a simple long take of a damselfly getting spawn camped by her cousin, presumably. To a 3 minute chronicle that most of us can relate to; one way or another. A gift, as always.
yes that is exactly what happened. Some other damselfly flew in, ate its wings and left. Unless it was edited out there didn't appear to be any mating so it's pretty horrifying
This hits me so close to home right now. I'm letting go of the girl I love to further my education. I feel like I'm killing someone. I feel so much pain over this. This story, your soothing voice and the comedy that comes with it actually helps. I'm balling my eyes out, Thanks Zefrank for being a true artist.
Listened to this as I worked on another screen and decided I wanted to see the video part too; that re-watch hit different. Absolutely adore this disparity of tone. I never expected to be made so sad with a less than three min clip of a damselfly nymph emerging.

@@SWISS-1337 A dragonfly is much larger with a more muscular thorax and a box-shaped head, as opposed to a damselfly with its bar-shaped head and slender body. Also, dragonflies don't fold their wings flush to their body at rest like damselflies do.
Scientific Explanation: Beetle simply wanted air, Damselfly grew wings, ANOTHER Damselfly came and ate them due to cannibalism and competition (apparently confirmed in the comments) then it went into the water to die. Emotional Explanation: Damselfly grew her wings, moving away from the beetle now with her opportunities growing. Beetle settled down, got into a loveless marriage and dreamt of Damselfly. Meanwhile Damselfly got into an abusive relationship, got severely injured to the point of being disabled, and ended her once happy, now miserable life.
@@jody4210 I was confused too then I replayed it then realized It was a dragonfly that came by. Edit: ok forget that. I just checked and dragons keep their wings spread out. They do not fold their wings back like that when they have landed. So I dunno. Edit #2 The videographer responded to someone else in the comments. "Hi, I'm the videographer. Yes, I believe it was a competitive move, as opposed to a meal. They were both females. If she was attacked for food, the damsel would have eaten most of the other damsel, not just damage the wings.
I was wondering that. The Dragon Fly ate part of the Damselfly.
This isn't a wholesome story
no thats a straight up dragonfly.
That beetle is dead.
its* new wings
I love my millipede, but this story made me think of what happened to the damselfly I left.
i thought the same ... oh fate have its ways for sure . we just tend to hope that our current is the best outcome because we humans fear the unknown the most ! ...
She got eaten by a trucker on bath salts, don't worry
And who devoured their wings
@@anyona19 YEAH!? What the heck happened there?! I am so confused.
@@anyona19 1:52 the black damselfly ate it, then the green one depressed and drown into muck
This had more emotions and depth than Rings of Power.
Well put
I didn't get what was happening at the end. Was that another Damselfly? What was it doing to ZeFrank's Damselfly?
@@nguyenxbj it ate her wings, so beetle never knew she never made it to the sky
@@nguyenxbj it was eating off its wings
Is it a true full life, lest we live as both the Damselfly and the Beetle?
The narration followed Beetle's life because we all saw how Damselfly's story ended.
😢
And lovely it was. Better for Beetle to have yearmed for damselfly - to have loved her from far away where everything was more beautiful.
wow, this comment deserves to be on top
It ended before it could even begin
This was… Profound and deeply disturbing. I think I love it. I don’t understand how your mind went there but you are truly an artist.
Everything looks better small, and far away.
Don't look too closely at life or the sheer agony of mere existence could wash you right away.
...still. It has its moments. ❤
My guy managed to tell a touching coming-of-age story in less than 3 minutes without losing any of the emotional impact.
dude this was like if Mr. Rogers had told sad depressing stories to children expecting funny stories. Im not complaining tho, this was actually quite beautiful as poetry.
Yeah, I didn't expect the feels.
Like if “Mr Rogers” theme song was a funeral dirge and he lived in a funeral parlor.
I didn’t expect to start my day legitimately heartbroken over the tragic tale of two lovers
You, sir, are a storytelling God.
How the hell did you just break my heart AND inspire me at the same time...With a Vidya about a beetle and a damselfly!? You sir are a MasterCraft at what you do. A comedic David Attenborough and a gift to the platform.
The music does most of the heavy lifting

The ending was terrifying

"Nature is indifferent to suffering." - The damselfly, probably
That was ... harsh and had a lot of profound meaning.
Nymph finally emerges ready to transform and take flight but before it can fully harden an adult comes and destroys its only chances for survival. And so the damselfly crawls into the muck not having any other option.
This feels like nostalgic to "Teddy Had An Operation" and I want more of this vibe from Zefranky

Yes, but while that was entirely heartwarming this one was a horror story.

Thanks for letting our song be a small part of this. We love it so much!
Really beautiful music. Very soothing.
It was absolutely beautiful. Thank you
I can get the name of the song?
This post is actually poetry, this is a true work of art, went through so many emotions and saw myself through their eyes.. Beautiful
Watched this three times. You are such an artist!! (assuming you read 3,000 comments). This is exactly what life is like for humans too!! We have hospitals. therapists and artists though.
Seeing the damsel fly's wings eaten off is already sad enough, can't imagine how Linda Bower felt seeing it happen in real time.
Who is Linda bower?
The one who filmed the video
@@kloclo7922 oh! That makes sense now 😂
I'd think see is pretty numb to stuff like that, bc nature is generally unforgiving and uncaring so this is not a rare thing to behold.
Probably "niiiice, you don't get footage like that very often".
I didn’t see the “sad story” part of thumb nail art till after I had my soul crushed by the weight of this story. I’m glad there is still art like this being made in this day and age. Thank you.
I didn't see that part too. this was unexpectedly absolutely heart wrenching.
I didn't even know it was a story. XD I just thought it was a video of damselflies and just kept waiting for the comedy. :')
This is mesmerising. I watched in horror the first time, and then came back to watch it again, heart filled with dread knowing what's to come, but unable to look away.
I thought it was gonna be something funny but the story he told made it so dark and real😭
Such beautiful imagery... ahhh.
How poetic.
Beautiful
It’s probably because you watched teddy get an operation!
Storytelling to absolute perfection. From a simple long take of a damselfly getting spawn camped by her cousin, presumably. To a 3 minute chronicle that most of us can relate to; one way or another.
A gift, as always.
omg spawn camped. I'm dead
@@mmseng2i Said The same thing 😂
Whatever you are going through, man...hugs. thank you for making us laugh, learn and cry
It's amazing how a short can say and make me feel so much. This is just perfect.
Did that damselfly just get it's wings chewed off immediately after getting them?
Exactly that’s what I’m trying to see how no one mentions it. Damselfly literally died
Pretty sure it was an SA situation. The audio and video are very discordant
yes that is exactly what happened. Some other damselfly flew in, ate its wings and left. Unless it was edited out there didn't appear to be any mating so it's pretty horrifying
Yes, it DID just have its wings eaten off.
Yes, yes he did, never flew a day in his life and a ton of people in the comments saying this is wholesome, it's actually horrifying.
As an entomologist with a dark sense of humor- this is absolutely effing brilliant. Thank you.
Why did the damselfly eat the wings of the other damselfly? Is it like a competitive trigger or for nutrition?
@@Limbergem ¿porque no los dos?
I was thinking the same thing. Seems a very odd form of predation.
@@Limbergem Dragonflies aren't picky eaters. They'll eat any insect, including their own kind.
@Biodegradable but this isn't a dragonfly tho, it's a damselfly

Hey I just want to let you know I hope you're doing well!
Listened to this as I worked on another screen and decided I wanted to see the video part too; that re-watch hit different.
Absolutely adore this disparity of tone. I never expected to be made so sad with a less than three min clip of a damselfly nymph emerging.
Same!! Omg it really hit different

One of the most compelling slice of life stories I have heard and seen in a very long time.

And all that in under three minutes...

His Human Test was really good too.

Damselfly died 10 minutes after molting.

Thank you for the video.

Loving the anthropomorphic story between the forbidden love of a bettle and a damselfly.... Until danger damselfly came and killed the new damselfly (effectively) by eating its wings? Like no one mentioned the bit where he was totally destroyed.
That was another damselfly.
beetle. beatle refers to a member of an old british band. the easy way to remember is music has a beat.
@@nocount7517 thank you, I did wonder, thought the colouring made it look like a dragon fly, but you are correct.
@@ratholin ty, auto correct have edited it.
@@SWISS-1337 A dragonfly is much larger with a more muscular thorax and a box-shaped head, as opposed to a damselfly with its bar-shaped head and slender body. Also, dragonflies don't fold their wings flush to their body at rest like damselflies do.
Scientific Explanation:
Beetle simply wanted air, Damselfly grew wings, ANOTHER Damselfly came and ate them due to cannibalism and competition (apparently confirmed in the comments) then it went into the water to die.

Brutal. I was shocked! I've also filmed two male dragonfly larvae with one trying to destroy the other."
Words cannot describe how chaotic my emotions are because of this
I watched this before bed last night. It crushed me so much that I am still feeling its affects today. I think this zefrank video has dredged up many painful issues in me. I am forever changed.
There are some moments in nature that are beautiful, and some that are painful. This video manages to capture both flawlessly.
Well, you know the old saying. If you love someone, let them go. If they return, they were always yours. If they don’t… chances are they were half-devoured by a dragonfly and left to drown in muck.
I’m paraphrasing. It sounds better in beetle.
Wow. That was different. I love this new track. More please
WUT? ... How can something possibly be so horrifying and hysterically funny at the same time? I'm so conflicted.... Bravo, Zefrank, bravo.
It went from a friendship story to a horror story
This video really is a great reminder that nature can be beautiful but also cruel, relentless, unfair and unforgiving.
However, we can still get a good laugh out of it.
This is an amazing little film, I'm enchanted by this. Thank you!
A bittersweet allegory for life and unfulfilled dreams.
