    Hell yeah! My first DIY using compress air, jet nozzle, crankcase oil was a smelter for quickly separating aluminium (and copper) from the 'impurities'. 14" pipe 6 feet long 1/4 wall. DIY high temp valve for batch collecting and release into a block mold (40 lbs. per, aluminium). Had to use 'tools' with 4 foot handle extensions to operate it.
    The cops became regular observers as reports of explosion noises from neighbors 1/4 mile away were called in (flame outs). I was commercially zoned so I could do what I wanted! Ran that thing until there was no more feed-stocks available for miles around. The pipe looked like a broke down sway back horse by the time I dismantled it.

    Hi Oil Burner, ever thought about putting a thick layer of clay on the inside of the barrel or "furnace" you could make it in such a shape that all the aluminium runs out much smoother, and if you put a cast iron barbecue or wood stove rack on the bottom on top of the clay the steel parts will not keep the aluminium from flowing away because the steel parts will stay on top of the cast iron rack. But more important is that the clay will make the aluminium melt even faster. The steel barrel draws a lot of heat away. I know there are better materials and designs to build a decent furnace but I mentioned clay since it is easy to get and it is easy to apply on your existing setup and easy to replace when it is no longer usable. A few taps with a hammer on the outside of the barrel and the clay will crack in order to replace it if needed. Have a good one and don't burn your fingers :-)

    I would probably add just a bit of tilt to your drum for better drainage. I'd do my best to keep it clean too, but I'm just meticulous that way.
    Cheers, and thumbed up!

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  9 років тому +1

      +jtjjbannie Thanks for the kind words. I did what you said and tilted the drum in later vids which did make it drain better as you said. In this case I don't want the thing too clean as I have discovered the build up is dross which is very effective in removing the dross from subsequent melts.
      The furnace might have some rubbish in it but the product is beautifully clean and that's the important bit with this. :0)

  • @alpha6dog

    Genius! Ok, so I didn't use the burner idea. I kinds stole foundry idea of an open container.
    I took a dryer bucket and the aluminum drops right thru the perforation into a water catch. It gives bearing sized "ingot". Thank you, for the idea.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  6 років тому

      That is a good way to do it. If you lined the top of the dryer drum with a bit of sheet metal, that would keep more heat going to the metal. The dryer would act like a strainer and keep everything else out.
      Very well thought out!

    Due to extreme heath and safety here in Glasgow Scotland If you want anything from a scrappy And you cant make it yourself you just have to shut fecking down. I made a burner as per your burner, but it would not heat my butt. Seems in Scotand there is a shotrage of 19kg tanks. And a 4" elbow is 43 quid. not counting the two by two small rings I need to attach to the tank.
    It would be cheaper to get my elbow from Aussie by post and packing than from here.

Sure beats trying to smash or cut them up!!! Lawn mower engines do the same, just a matter of fishing the crap out afterwards.

      Yes, it will do them all. For cast especially you will need to have a suitable furnace with refractory able to withstand the heat. I melted the corner off some bricks in my cheapo furnace the other day and The burner was far from being dialed up. Probably running 10% of capacity.

      peter robertson Thanks Mate. I appreciate the kind words especially from down under.
      Yeah it seems OK for the yanks that can get everything they want cheap as chips but it's not so easy or inexpensive for us here. Learned that the hard way. Instead of expensive and hard to get refractory, I just use Raw power. The yanks think I'm over the top with the amount of heat I pour into things but it's a matter of using whats available and affordable. Oil is a lot cheaper and easier for me than refractory and I'm getting to the stage I can make any heat output burner I want.
      That said, I'm thinking of doing another furnace and using bricks and clay maybe with some pearlite as a "Helper" in the mix. My dirt furnace held up really well as did the brick one so I'm thinking of combining the 2 and see how I go. Have a look at those on my other vids.

    Wow that's an amazing flame , if you had more fire bricks to insulate the heat and shapped to concentrate the heat , then the aluminium would melt much faster. My dad used to do some non ferrous casting using coke and gas fired furnaces. That oil burner would have been so much better.

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  8 років тому +2

      +Vincent Pons You're entirely correct. A proper set up furnace would be much faster and use much less fuel. I do this for demonstration purposes as much as anything and the fact it works so well so poorly setup like this only indicates how good a proper setup would be.

    Great energy video.
    I have asked others with out reply. It looks like a time test with this head. On a production style melt Is there a reason not to stuff the barrel full and get the most use of your btu's?

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  3 роки тому +4

      That would be the way to do it. If I were not Filming, I'd stand the barrel vertically, have the burner entering near the bottom and fill it from there and the ally Draining straight out the bottom. You would get max pre heat and use of the energy that way and could melt a lot of ally and having it running out like water.

    the trick with the miss is to sometime replace the things you sneak with new ones. So eventually, when you take something or something goes missing, she's think she might get a new one and not say anything when you take it

    if you connect this to a mini forge wouldn't that multiply the efficiency? cause as it is i see it's spreading and losing heat everywhere

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  8 років тому +2

      Yes, absoloutley. This was a test of the burner only. It works much better in a furnace as I have done on many other vids.

    im curious to know what the oil burner smells like? does it have a clean smell or does it smell like burning oil. we boil alot of things outside here in south louisisana and this could be something that could sell here$$$$$$$ propane is expensive to a cheap-o like myself lol

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  8 років тому

      The only smell you get when the things are running is like a warm air smell. No odour with any fuel.
      I have tried getting an aroma to the fuel burning citronella, coconut oil, Duck fat and other things and they all smell the same, no odour or scent at all.

    How long do you think an oil drum..standard 55gal size...would run this thing?

    • @glumpy10
      @glumpy10  6 років тому

      If this is running at 200Kw, that's 20L an hour or in US terms.... errr, 20 L an hour, a 55 gal drum is actually a 44 gallon drum which is 205L so 10 Hours at this rate. Of course this is a ship load of heat so if you turned it down you get longer burn.
      With free waste oil, no need to worry about fuel consumption anyway.

    • @TheStarforce2
      @TheStarforce2 6 років тому

      @@glumpy10 cool. Now all i need to do is find a few backyard mechanics near by who have plenty of waste oil!. I got an old vac for a blower i just need a fuel tank with valve for supply and a metal tank to rig to preheat oil as it is getting cold out here and maybe i can melt some shit b4 the snow comes.
