Hi Gary. Love the videos. I messed up my right leg a week ago, and it has set me back with my gardening chores. My leg is an ugly mess, but no broken bones, just bruised from the ankle to the hip. I can hobble about, but digging and planting peach trees is put off for a week or two more to give it time to heal. Let's see, what is new in my garden? Yesterday I harvested out shelling peas, and my first squash of the season. Today I harvested the last snow peas and a cucumber, and added the reeds to my compost bin. It is hungry. Tomorrow I have harvesting Swiss chard, going through the kohlrabi and harvesting it out, and picking more squash and cucumbers on my agenda. Then on Saturday I'll take my third reaping of mustard greens, and harvest zucchini. I'm looking at about June 4th for harvesting potatoes. I may do it next week, and replant with turnips and carrots. It is in a location where the raised bed gets shade. My tomato plants, especially the Thornburn's Terra-Cotta, are covered with fruit. The pole beans are climbing. It took some work, but the cucumbers, cantaloupe, and watermelon are climging too. I've found three patches of eggs and two squashbugs on my crookneck squash. They've been terminated! I don't like bare dirt and I am down to the last dregs of leaves saved from last fall. I may have to steal some leaves and gass clippings from my compost bin to cover the exposed soil.
Oh no. Best wishes on healing. Call in friends and family. The heat is helping my plants take off. Thanks for your support and please visit.. Starting my first garden this year an started some of my plants indoors. I just wanted to leave a comment (even though this is an old video so not sure if you will see) but your channel has been a tremendous help! You touch on EVERYTHING. Alot of other channels still leave me with questions but not you! I save the videos I need incase I have to go back rewatch. Love that I can find videos for the plants Im growing and get all the info in one spot... Its a life saver!!
Another great long format video. This one perfectly coincided with the time I plant my squash and cukes. I like to play these videos while I am working in the grow room. I always pick up something new, and I prefer listening to instructive material over music. As always, thanks Gary.

I love using those fence posts since they don't rot. I have a suggestion: Buy small posts and after you have put them in the ground you screw those wood stakes that you buy into themx1'setc. Do not let the wood touch the ground. All you are doing is extending the metal posts with wood. I have a ton of posts and when the plants start to climb I just attach the wood 1X1's The wood does not rot and you save money in the meantime. I buy the short ones they are easier to work with. I also use plastic covered wire to run across... Another great video thanks for taking the time for us.

I should have watched this video before starting my garden! Planted some cucumbers earlier, but they all ended up looking pretty thin and scraggly. Seems like I didn't give them enough food and light. So I think it's time to start a new round and see if I can do better with your tips this time. Super helpful video, and I love that you put it all together for easy finding the info

Nice ideas on trellises and vertical climbing. I found that half-inch metal conduit is cheap and easier to drive in. Then use plastic zip ties to attach them. Conduit will rust but lasts a long, long time.
I also add peat moss to my mix in the raised beds. It seems to keep the soil looser and easier to manipulate with a shovel with dense or post winter settled soils. Also helpful for dense clay type soils. Some of my smaller beds for fruit bushes have added sand for good water disbursement and drainage.

Thank you so much for the education on growing cucumbers. Last year I had a sucessful year growing the Boston variety. They made fabulous crunchy pickles! I was though constantly fighting mildew and fungus. I read to use 50% milk, and 50% water. It almost cured them in one day I was amazed. I have pleanty of pickles so I'm not growing them this year. Next time I will try your method as well. Again, thank you for your videos and education sharing.
We grew cucumbers by just planting it in clay soil and not giving it anything and it still pumped out some big and pretty tasty cucumbers. I imagine they would be much happier and more productive with this treatment.
Yeah so plants want to grow and give. Just help them a long. Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop for all your gardening needs: www.therustedgarden.com

Gary, I am always trying new things even after40 years of gardening. 2 things I have settled on now is germinating seeds in moist paper towels using a little bit of hydrogen peroxide and water. I put the seeds in paper towels and then into zip lock bags. Germination is awesome (quick). I transplant everything into 8 oz. cups and we are off to the races. The second thing that I have settled into is no till gardening. The results are astounding. I am in Fl. now for the winter so this is all new for me down here. I tried Tomatoes and cukes down here last with with mixed results.

Excellent. Already made a whole bunch of mistakes, as I planted these under grow lights 5 days ago, and they are up already, in too small of a pot. I’ll be seeding more in a larger pot 4 weeks from now as that would be the proper planting time for Wyoming. Thank you for all of this information!

Oh no😔you killed two, just like that, lion king style, mean. I would have broken the roots apart 😲😳😭😩😪. Ok😶🙄🙃😏I got over it, good rest of the video. I will get some cucumbers growing. Thanks man. 🙂🥒👈🥒👍
Hi Gary. Great videos. I haven't commented on your videos for a long while now. We had talked about the grow bags a year ago. Anyway - a lot of awesome information in your videos. You are my number #1 source for gardening info on UA-cam. I depend on your videos for the most budget friendly and step by step instructions - very easy to follow. Thank you so much for dedicating so much of your valuable time to help so many people in this world to grow a garden. It does save sooo much money from having to spend money at the grocery store - especially the price of tomatoes are so outrageous. Anyway - I grow aloft of different types of intdeterminate tomatoes - my faves are the purple types. To add a little sweetness to my tomatoes - I usually add a tablespoon of sugar in the planting hole before the tomatoe plant goes in there to grow. I was wondering - do you have a list of your MOST prolific and favorite varieties of tomatoes ? Thank you for everything Gary. I appreciate all of your vey hard work. ;)
Thanks again for watching. I really enjoy it. It really does save money and it is good for you mind and soul too. Something fun to do. So I plant so many. Cherries of course are prolific. But there are so many. Celebrity comes to mind. The Homestead variety too. Marglobe was really good. So glad too your are having success. I really appreciate you taking the time to compile these in-depth videos that provide so much information in one setting. Clean the seeds with two green scrubbers rubbing them together. This removes the sticky gell covering the seeds, prior to drying. I like to dry seeds in my pilot light oven. I believe a bowl with one birthday candle stuck to the bottom of the bowl, and then add any type of vegetable oil ,even old rancid oil, and light it either in your electric oven or even using a similar size cardboard box, for a week will do well or use a 40-60 watt bulb for the heat source for the week of gentle drying of the seeds.

Just wanted a popular method used by farmers in India for getting loads of female flowers. While the seedling grows once it has around 13 to 15 leaves they pinch the tender tips so that it encourages new shoots which they call the 2nd generation shoots. Again they allow the 2nd generation shoots to grow about 15 leaves and pinch the tender tips. The resulting shoot called the 3rd generation or 3G shoots is supposed to bear more female flowers. Almost all the leaves of the 3G shoots will bear female flowers. The concept is that you need fewer male flowers for pollination. In nature the gourds and cucumbers naturally follow this without pruning however take a longer time for the 3G shoots. Hope you can try this and get better yields

5:55 love your vids Gary - I don't think I could cut those two plants off though and keep the one, they all look so healthy, I would find it very hard to cull.
Great video, I am a beginner gardener. I live in Boston so the climate is cold often. I needed & was wondering about those numbers lol npk got it! Also all the tips are awesome down to the 💡 and pellets thank you... Great content!

idk if you check old comments but I'll try. on the powdery mildew section, you treated for aphids with soapy water then used the baking soda for the mildew. my question is, can you mix the soap and baking soda and get the same results or does it work better as back to back sprays? appreciate your vids and store. I had a hugely successful garden in KY last year using your suggestions, especially your fertilizer vids. I felt very overwhelmed trying to figure out organic/ non organics. your breakdowns were the best and easiest to understand after 10+ hrs of vids, which is actually how I found you last year. you will have our families support from now on Dude!✌❤

You’re wonderful. I just don’t have a clue about how to do this. I experimented last year but now with what’s going on I need to be an expert and once again.... I don’t have a clue. Plus it’s still snowing here and the growing season is so short, I’m growing inside with grow lights to get them ready for outside 😱😱😱😱 Sounds of insects makes me think you’re in a different zone than I am, but your info hopefully helps me to figure it out. I could live off of cucumbers and bean sprouts with a tomato mix but this is so confusing. So once again thank you for your info. 🥰

Question: What is the shelf life of mint oil and neem? Question: Is mint oil effective on all cucurbits including melons? Question: If I don't have fresh animal manure, will adding blood meal or packaged chicken manure provide enough nutrients for cucumbers? I appreciate your videos for all the information it gives me and recommend them to people who ask me how-to questions, which take lengthy explanations, about how to get started gardening. I like that when you show how to build trellises, you don't assume your audience knows a lot about building or has a lot of special tools with which build. I'm thinking about planting soyu cucumbers with an amaranth trap crap because it might do well in hot, humid North Central Florida and doesn't require pollinators (can enclose in tule if necessary).
Glad to help. I only have kept it for 2 full seasons and it was effective. Mint should work on all melons. Compost is always good. It doesnt have to be manure. But bagged fertilizers like you mentioned can be enough.

Me too! Figured out the hard way that the lights have to be really close when seeding, I got a bunch of leggy beets and had to start over!

Thanks so much

Nice ideas on trellises and vertical climbing. I found that half-inch metal conduit is cheap and easier to drive in. Then use plastic zip ties to attach them. Conduit will rust but lasts a long, long time.

I also add peat moss to my mix in the raised beds. It seems to keep the soil looser and easier to manipulate with a shovel with dense or post winter settled soils. Also helpful for dense clay type soils. Some of my smaller beds for fruit bushes have added sand for good water disbursement and drainage.
I agree. Thanks

Very glad to help. Did you use whole milk?
We grew cucumbers by just planting it in clay soil and not giving it anything and it still pumped out some big and pretty tasty cucumbers. I imagine they would be much happier and more productive with this treatment.

Thanks. I haven't tried that yet but might give it a try... not till gardening.
This was a very well put together video. I watched it completely. Thanks again!!!
Appreciated!

Thanks

Great video. Very informative. You’ve hit on a number of issues I’ve been seeing on my zucchini and cucumber plants. And great idea to use closet shelving as a trellis. Will definitely be making that.

Excellent. Already made a whole bunch of mistakes, as I planted these under grow lights 5 days ago, and they are up already, in too small of a pot. I’ll be seeding more in a larger pot 4 weeks from now as that would be the proper planting time for Wyoming. Thank you for all of this information!
I learned by making mistakes.

Me too. I have a cucumber plant thats 3 inches tall and has 7 leaves. The 7 inch one has one less leaf but not as rich in color as the tiny one. Im not going to kill that plant. Its tiny but strong.
@@THERUSTEDGARDEN i almost cried im new to this you are heartless
@@kasthegreat4883 Me too, i know its not good to disturb the roots but that hurt to watch
Oh no😔you killed two, just like that, lion king style, mean. I would have broken the roots apart 😲😳😭😩😪. Ok😶🙄🙃😏I got over it, good rest of the video. I will get some cucumbers growing. Thanks man. 🙂🥒👈🥒👍
Another great video Gary! I love watching you! You always have such great information
As always thanks!

I took notes & now feel prepared to tackle any challenges with growing these types of veg- somehow these have been amongst the hardest I’ve tried to grow.
Ultimately, I have gone from a black thumb to a green thumb because of your channel. I could never keep a houseplant alive, but now have provided fresh organic food for my family for the last 3 years- expanding each year- thanks to your inspiration.

Hi guys looks good
Clean the seeds with two green scrubbers rubbing them together.
Thanks

I just tried these for the first time this year. I found they were easier to remove if you had watered them first before removing but they were annoying and I will likely go back to peat pellets or pots next year

Thanks so much.

5:55 love your vids Gary - I don't think I could cut those two plants off though and keep the one, they all look so healthy, I would find it very hard to cull.
I know it is always so hard but they just get to large.

idk if you check old comments but I'll try. on the powdery mildew section, you treated for aphids with soapy water then used the baking soda for the mildew. my question is, can you mix the soap and baking soda and get the same results or does it work better as back to back sprays?
appreciate your vids and store.

Thanks so much. We are in spring warming right now.
