    One dynamic duo I have are twin sister demigods. How they contrast from each other is their different ideologies, they are basically on two different extremes from each other. One views themself very highly because of her status as a demigod, to the point where they view mortals as lesser beings and believe they should be with the gods. The other views themself as strictly a mortal to the point where she won't even use her powers and just live a normal every day life. Eventually they both get knocked down of their world views and come to see the other side. The one that viewed herself as strictly a mortal, comes to see her god side and begins to use her powers for good. While the one that once viewed herself as above mortals comes to see that she isn't as big and important as she thought she was and warms up to people.

    Well, I have two characters
    Tada: Stoic, serious and quiet.
    Orochi: Goofy, fun loving and carefree.
    They're not related by blood but they love each like brothers since they were young after being lost together in a forest.
    They're Star Warriors. (Not about to explain all that)
    Tada keeps Orochi in line because if Orochi is left unattended for too long, the balance between Chaos and Order will be at risk.
    Orochi is very chaotic and destructive when he slowly loses grip on his mental health.
    They destined to fight each other despite being the best of friends.
    Tada usually is the one who can get Orochi back to normal or at least stop him before he completely loses his mind.

    Nice video man. My idea of foil characters at least during the first few arcs to keep the story interesting as possible is the concept of revenge.
    One is going after his target not just because said target ruined his life or something but also because he knows how dangerous that person is if something is not done and he won’t drag other people down with him.
    The other is going his target for personal vendetta as such he doesn’t care about how he does it and that includes joining an evil organization to get information.
    It may be sound generic for now, but I’m still in the of the works

    Can i just say I found your stuff while reading up on power systems. And its so good, useful and explained well.
    Even though my thing im working on isnt a comic, but rather writing that takes cues from shonen manga, you’re still so good at explaining elements of writing

    I never heard of a “foil” character before, thought they were just rivals or antagonists. Well I’m writing my on comic with my main protagonist being reckless/headstrong and my foil character more serious and technical, but they’re both are powerhouses.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  7 місяців тому +2

      You aren't completely wrong! A lot of times authors make the antagonists and rivals THE foil characters! The term "foil" comes from photography. You would use something like aluminum foil off screen to reflect light onto something like jewlery. The foil would help illuminate the jewlery, making it glow and look more attractive for the photo. That's the basic idea of foil characters too! In your comic, a foil character COULD be your antagonist like Vegeta was for Goku early on. OR your foil character COULD be a side character, like Ichigo and Uryu from Bleach! Best of luck with your comic!

    One of foils, as I have more than one MC, is more of my villain, kinda. His role is to take from that MC to push him to get stronger. He acts cold and calculated to highlight the warm and caring nature of that MC.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  7 місяців тому +1

      That sounds good! A lot of stories use the antagonist or rival character as the foil character! You are on the right track!

    Thanks for another great video! I like the examples you provided. Death Note is great because it has the ideological foils of Light and L, but also the character foils of Light and Misa.
    For my own writing, I drew upon the classic Sherlock/Watson dynamic for a supernatural mystery that will debut later this year. Thanks again for everything!

    I used to not understand what Foil Characters meant, but now thanks to this video now I undertand better foil characters and how to use them.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm really glad to hear that! The term "foil" actually comes from photography. When taking a photograph of something like Jewlery, you want it to look nice. Sometimes photographers will place aluminum foil outside of the frame to reflect some of the light onto the jewlery directly, making it shine. That's where the term comes from!

    Yoo I'm a big fan of the channel, watched a lot of your vids while writing my manga and just finished the script of my first volume (200 pages).
    Do you maybe have tips on finding an artist to collaborate with? I got the whole series planned out with all the arcs, character development, themes and world building till volume 50

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  7 місяців тому +2

      YO THAT'S AWESOME TO HEAR! Congrats on finishing the script!
      I plan to make a video about finding artists in the future but my quick advice is 1) money talks. If you commission an artist they will always be down 2) NETWORK! Some artists are looking for writers to work with out of passion. Funny enough an artist asked me to write a script earlier today for them to illustrate. Make sure you have examples of past work (one shot scripts, concepts etc) Artists want to see that you are serious and are actually trying to be a good writer.
      A lot of people only "say" they are a writer but never have a portfolio to show when they are asked. Places like Facebook Groups, Amino Groups, discord communities, twitter, instagram etc are GREAT for connecting with artists! Good luck!!

    I'm attempting to write/draw a manga, and I have a couple of characters planned out that I think will count as foil characters for my main character. I have a second main character who is the POV main character's partner on missions, but their personalities are completely different. The Partner's personality is very logical and robotic, and fights from of a sense of duty, and the main character is more headstrong, and is fighting for revenge. Thanks for the video, it's super helpful.

    • @MonitorComics
      @MonitorComics  7 місяців тому +1

      That sounds like a good foil character to me! Clashing personalities like that usually do well because they force each other to think differently about a situation or act out of character sometimes. At the end of the day, they push each other, so while they feel like opposites they're compatible! Thanks for taking the time to watch! Glad it could help!

    my favorite series for foils is YuGiOh because there is essentially a four-way foil among Yugi, Atem, Kaiba, and Joey which I haven't seen in other series. Often foils are just pairs but I like how YuGiOh manages to make most of the important cast all bounce off each other. Although YuGiOh does also have a fair few characters who have wasted potential (looking at you Hanasaki, Anzu and Honda).

    I have a foil character between a man and a cartoon dog.
    Well their difference is that the man is more of a depressed and unamused man while the cartoon dog is bright and joyful.
    And as I watch this video, I've realised they are even more different because of their abilities of my power system. While the man is negative, he have a positive weapon that is more fictional and used in cartoons, while the dog who is positive, yet have a literal realistic weapon that have been used to kill in real life such as strangling which is negative.

    In my webtoon, "Captain + Cadet", the main girl character (whose a space police officer) is forced to smile, tries to please everyone, and Christian, so is against killing people as she believes everything has an outcome that could be consequential. Meanwhile, she is somewhat of a "Genki girl" trope, but shes also unliked by almost everyone she meets. Meanwhile, her partner who came from a criminal family and forced to work with her, is the serious one whose calculating, and wants to kill, but his conscience won't let him.
    Idk... itll sound better when drawn out.

    I like the video, I would just like to know, have you already made a video how to create good protagonists with codes or invent other codes, avoiding the same repetition
    good video to continue like this because I would still like to have more of your videos

      @MonitorComics  7 місяців тому

      I have made a couple videos about protagonists in the past! I think those were more general "what makes a good protagonist" if I remember correctly. Like you said, that could be repetitive though, so I could add a video to the list about breaking the rules to make something feel fresh!

    I love foil duos, those are in real life also the most Interesting.
    Old Testament and New Testament, eye for an eye and turn the other cheek.
    Malcom X and Martin Luther King.
    Genghis Khan and Changchun.
    It can represent the duality of mankind, two different types of thinking that contradict each other while both being valid in their own way.

They told me it’s super easy to read it fast intriguing and interesting, that they felt like they were in the story in the story and they want to know more. But nobody talk about the length of the chapter 110 pages. Is it good or bad?

    • @MonitorComics

      LOL I still own my UA-cam channel don't worry! This project has been in the works for a little over a year! I made a community post about it a while ago but the TL;DR is I want to bring back Livestreams and felt I was limited with what I had. I felt like adding a VTuber to the channel would allow me to make higher quality content for you all and give me more opportunities on this channel! My content will not be changing, but I will be able to add more types of content little by little (more collabs, gaming videos related to art/anime, podcasts, etc)
      My reference was how Game Theory has Matpat. I felt like this channel was missing a "personality" so "Lux Denizen" will be that for Monitor Comics. Hopefully that clears things up, I will explain it a lot more very soon when I debut the VTuber!
