- Today Tommy @FDRFAB and Brad @Hourglassingenuity head over to 485 Designs and check out a Bike build they have been working on.. I don't know how to categorize this bike between a Super Moto or a street legal motocross bike? The guys at 485 Design have a background in motocross and their inspiration behind this build stems from a combination between loving the sport of motocross and building custom street legal bikes.
485 has a background in building the Yamaha Virago platform into custom cafe racers. In this series we are going to highlight some of our favorite fabricators and their current builds.. Cars, Bikes, cafe racers and everything in between.

I absolutely looove this engine. I've never ridden an XR400 but I've ridden a CB400SS in Asia which shares the same engine and it was pure joy. Unfortunately Honda didn't bring the 400ss to the US 😭. But, since the XR400 has the same engine, I can always get one on the cheap (or an XR650, but I'm not sure those engines are street-legal) then look for talented builders like yourselves to make it into a street fighter. Would love this as a daily ride!
It would make a great bike! Get a hold of the guys at 485 and get a build going. It will be well worth it.
There was street legal XR650R available in the US, so you can get one for a project. They have been discovered, so cheap might not be possible anymore. Just keep it simple and do an SM build. The bike is an absolute beast that is celebrated as one of the most dominate racing bikes Honda ever produced, so hacking it up doesn't add anything.
I am intrigued to see a Kickstarter shaft ...

Wooow excellent job guys, I have a question, what front forks you use for make it Mach? And what wheel you use on the rear? I asking because I'm a industrial designer, and I recently buy a xr 400 and I would love to make a super moto but I don't know how to make the Mach in the wheels could you help me with that please 🙂

We are hoping to film with it more in the future. They were finishing some details on the bike at the time.
You can only use your little finger on the front brake, any more and you'd launch over the handlebars lol
Plenty of front brake on that thing for sure!
I built something similar based off a design by 56 motorcycles I think except it cost like $2,000NZD I might take it apart again and go over and make it a bit better as I only had one day to throw everything together

All the self build street racers, scramblers and flat trackers are sending a message to Honda and Suzuki etc people don't want plastic bikes they want a bike that looks 1960s .stripped down. basic. cool looking. I hope they are watching in Japan and now china. Another thing is liquid cooling. I've always choose air cooled be it 2t or 4t and never had any problems with cooling so why use it. It was invented for car engines hid inside an engine bay with no air flow. So why in a bike ?
