Fossil Fighters: Frontier- _It's like Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts, _*_BUT WITH DINOSAURS!_* Get ready for a wall of text, kiddos, 'cause it's Quickie Review Time! If you've played the first two games in the series and you're a long-time fan like I am, then I can guarantee that you will most likely have mixed feelings about Fossil Fighters: Frontier. Have you ever heard the expression, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? Well, that's pretty much how I feel about this game. Because the series has switched developers (The first two games were developed solely by RED Entertainment, but for Frontier, Spike Chunsoft more or less took the reins on this pony), all the things that made the first two games good were thrown out the window in order to introduce a lackluster gimmick involving "Bone Buggies", high-tech customizable cars that do all the digging and reviving for you. No longer will you have to walk around, painstakingly carrying fossil rocks, for now we have cars! *CAAAAARRRRS!* What a time to be alive. Occasionally, you can take your Bone Buggy around in Time Attacks on the various courses throughout the real world, which add a neat little racing element that feels hilariously out of place in a game about reviving dinosaurs and pitting them against each other in mortal combat. In addition, the fantastic and highly strategic 3v3 battle system has been scrapped in favor of a watered-down system that's both ludicrously simple and overly complex at the same time. It's mostly 1v1 real-time battles in teams of up to three players, and, in addition to the keeping of status ailments and rock-paper-scissors element system, there's also "stance changes" that your vivosaurs can enter that can either harm them more or prevent damage if the stance is optimal. It honestly takes some getting used to, and it's hard to explain in text form. However, the game's not all bad. The script, much like the previous games, is phenomenal and humorous throughout (I'll bet good money that Nob Ogasawara worked on this one too), and the game both looks and sounds great, with some cool character designs, updated visuals for the vivosaurs, and a score with plenty of catchy beats. On top of that, unearthing fossils is *significantly* less unforgiving, as you could do enough damage to a fossil that would render it unrevivable in past games and walk away with only 98% or more. Rare fossils also got changed for the better. They're now gold instead of red, and they're now counted in addition to the regular fossils, allowing 8 skills at a time. This allows a vivosaur to have much better skills in its arsenal. Although, it bothers me that the dev team forgot that you can't revive a fossil WITHOUT HAVING ITS HEAD, but here you can, since the different fossils determine the skills you can have. It's just so jarring to me. There's an online Ranked Battle mode too, but since this game got swept under the rug in order to make room for *Mario Party 10,* which launched on the same day, there hasn't been much activity since launch, from what I noticed. _I can't imagine why._ To sum things up, Fossil Fighters: Frontier has ended up becoming what I initially feared it would be- the black sheep of the flock. It tries to do things differently from its predecessors but ends up doing things *SO* differently that it doesn't even feel like the same game anymore. There *are* good things to say about it, don't get me wrong- but the negatives end up outweighing the positives. It's a delicious slice of disappointment pie, served to you piping hot. Stick with the first two games, they're much, MUCH better, and they're easy to get your hands on. Just try not to feel too salty about the fact that playing FF:Champions online no longer works. *_RIP IN KILL NINTENDO WFC_* Anyhow, to anyone else who purchased this game- that is to say, all _two_ of you, I'll be looking forward to fighting you online. It'll be great! I main Sungari, Titano AR and Carchar. And also Seidon. Because Seidon is the best sauropod.
One other thing I forgot to add in my quickie-review is the game's Fossilary, which documents the Vivosaurs that you've unlocked and provides informative little snippets of info about the actual real-life fossils that these vivosaurs are based on, which I think is really cool. The other games had that too, but Frontier goes into more depth with the fossils than the past games do, so there's another point in its favor.
Nintendo/Game Freak doesn't own the rights to the monster collecting genre just as much as Square Enix doesn't own the rights to a JRPG or Nintendo themselves again, do not own the rights to a 2D platformer. It's worth noting Pokemon isn't even the first one to do the monster collecting thing. That goes to Shin Megami Tensei. Did Pokemon popularize it? Absoutely. Look, I'm a HUGE Pokemon fan. Been one my whole life, but this stigma that Pokemon is the only one allowed to do monster collecting RPGs is stupid. Pokemon isn't the only one in this genre that's allowed to exist. Get over it.
I remember the the first game in the series. The battle system was pretty cool and the vivisaurs were too. There was a simple yet strategic feeling to the game. The overworld, fossil digging and story line left a bit to be desired though. From what I've seen of this game, it looks like they're trying to put a lot more effort into that stuff.
Honestly there should be a Fossil Fighter anime or atleast a manga like Pokemon Adventures , nintendo has shown with the Kid Icarus series they can make great animation for their franchises, this would be a great way to branch out.
They had a manga for the first game but it had like 1 chapter. And for the second game could have been an anime( lets face it we loved the fossil fighter champion characters). And for this game maybe. I haven't gotten it yet and I'm playing to buy it when summer starts.
Ishaan kaushal Yeah I remember taking a read of the manga but I felt it was just to silly. I wish they had made an attempt to make a manga along the lines of something like Pokemon Adventures or Legend of Zelda, serious but with comedic moments at the same time.
Great game, very different from the first two, not always for the better, I wish they'd drop the toddler approach they give each of their games. It misrepresents the game.
A poor sequel but ugh, I love it so much I remember seeing it on TV for the first time and lil baby me fell in love immediately (especially since I played fossil fighters in the past) Sure, it might have taken away most of what fossil fighters was, but still a solid and fun game to me
well i am mad at the people who made the game who thought all of this was a good idea i have been a long time fan since the first game and when i saw they were making a 3rd game i got it but when i played it i they made it very different from the other two and not in good ways i have noticed a lot of people who are fans of the first two have the same issues with this game as i do
While it does have some similarities to pokemon, that by no means that it is a bad game. This series has really held up over the years, especially the 2nd installment. If you haven't really played any of the games, you really don't have an opinion in the matter.
As the series evolved, it strayed away more from the typical RPG, but now Frontier's combat system just strays too much from the first two. It seems that the developers tried to hard to make it different and just came out with a meh product. You only control one vivosaur now while the other two are controlled by CPUs. .-. I don't know what this has to do with anything but it's something you Fossil Fighters fans should know. :P
THIS GAME IS AWESOME EXCEPT FOR ONE THING i hate how you have to use your friends for your other two vivosaurs i shoukd be abke to use three of my own dinosaur choices not my choice and to of my friends dinosaurs
Sawyer Ringe Pretty much the same concept but instead reviving monsters their dinosaurs. Even though Spectrobes was released a year before, this series seems to be doing much better considering Spectrobes hasn't released any more games since Origins for the Wii. I played the two games on DS and they were great, lot's of fun. I bet this series is fun as well but I'm passing it since I've got plenty of other games and other's I'm looking forward to.
You definatly should give it a try, and don't listen to anyone telling you shouldn't touch it because what you like or don't like should only be controled by your OWN opinions :3
Fossil Fighters is really good, and actually it isn't all that similar with Pokemon. Although, I think it would be best to get the one of the first two. This one looks quite different. I can totally assure you you can find enjoyment out of the first if turn based RPGs are your thing.
Looks like a combination of early Digimon games and Monster Rancher. I don't think I'm interested in it myself but it does look like it could be a lot of fun for some people.
***** there's nothing 'perfect' about aliasing from an artistic POV, it's like looking at a poorly cropped picture of a painting, did you think the artist of said painting meant to make it look like that? Also, do you not realize the hypocrisy in your own comment?

Sigh. Look, I'll admit, I've never played fossil fighters. But I'm entitled to my opinion. From every gameplay video and trailer I've seen, I've observed many similarities between the two franchises, so much so, that it's almost identical concept in theory. If you're so butthurt about my opinion, then stop talking to me and talk with people that agree with you. Sorry that my opinion seems to have ticked you off. Sure, I've never played it, and maybe if I did, my opinion would change. But I'm not about to plunk down $40 on something that I think looks like a decent game, but one I don't absolutely need to have or really care much about.
Oh i'm not ruling either of those out. This game just looks like it would be a fun addition to if I were to buy a 3DS. Considering my work situation, I don't think that will happen :(

Good info, nice comment.
FoxMan u (v{=¿
Um, yeah. Cars... weren't needed... I'd like just the old way they were. NOT CARS.
FoxMan Another thing is that they screwed up all the cool looking dinosaurs and made them realistic and ugly

thank you i hate when people say that too
This brings back memories
From my experience with the game. driving around with dinosaurs around you is pretty fun.
No

finally a sequel to one of my favorite video game seiries :D
um....... champions was a sequel to the first one
well it's been awhile tho
Honestly there should be a Fossil Fighter anime or atleast a manga like Pokemon Adventures , nintendo has shown with the Kid Icarus series they can make great animation for their franchises, this would be a great way to branch out.

I think the title of the game just sold me.
Who still has their origional, I still rek other fighters with my starting vivasuars.
Great game, very different from the first two, not always for the better, I wish they'd drop the toddler approach they give each of their games. It misrepresents the game.
J I jgfs HP gO
ArtilleryCrusader What's the toddler approach you're talking about?
90% of the people here dont know that this is the 3rd game in the series
More like 98%.
Red Dino mascot for Smash 5?
Sadly I've never played these games. Maybe it's time I did. After all I've always LOVED dinosaurs.
+Randomark3087 trust me, you'll LOVE IT. but go in order, please. the first game doesn't get nearly as much praise as it should
Storm Kahan yes ikr
A poor sequel but ugh, I love it so much
I remember seeing it on TV for the first time and lil baby me fell in love immediately (especially since I played fossil fighters in the past)
Sure, it might have taken away most of what fossil fighters was, but still a solid and fun game to me
I really like that game
Why is so much hate going to the game? At least half the people hating probably haven't even played it yet.
People. Are. Dumb. Thats all the explanation to their hating you need.
well i am mad at the people who made the game who thought all of this was a good idea i have been a long time fan since the first game and when i saw they were making a 3rd game i got it but when i played it i they made it very different from the other two and not in good ways i have noticed a lot of people who are fans of the first two have the same issues with this game as i do
this game is a huge disappointment compared to the first two
This game was a total wreck compared to FF and FF Champions.
I sort of wish they'd kept the slightly more cartoonish style, but the game looks fun.
Noo D: I don't have a 3ds, I won't be able to finish this series :(
Can we get over in England soon please
Oh it looks like fun but really niche. Don't know if I'm going to pick this up. Specially with Splatoon being released on May :3
3 years and no new one 😢
I loved the original! One of the best RPG i played in my lifetime!
While it does have some similarities to pokemon, that by no means that it is a bad game. This series has really held up over the years, especially the 2nd installment. If you haven't really played any of the games, you really don't have an opinion in the matter.
@@KOOPAS1234 You replied to a 6 year old comment bro
I ordered this game, hope it comes in the mail soon!
I was beyond disappointed when igno and frigi weren't in this :(
Jurassic Cat yea
This looks like an old game for the original DS. It was called Spectrobes and the resemblance is pretty damn high.
This game is nothing like pokemon i have played pokemon and the original fossil fighters they're different
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS THE GAMES AREN'T RIPOFFS OF POKEMON!!!
Fossil fighters has a better story than pokemon.
damn!!!!!
Gotta admit the game does come across as Pokemon-esque
As the series evolved, it strayed away more from the typical RPG, but now Frontier's combat system just strays too much from the first two. It seems that the developers tried to hard to make it different and just came out with a meh product. You only control one vivosaur now while the other two are controlled by CPUs. .-. Like a Pokemon game with dinosaurs -_-
Nope it isnt
Better gameplay
This seems heavily inspired by Spectrobes ! Im wondering why nobody is pointing that out
Let's poke some bones.
Dinosaur king anyone ?
ADVENTURE'S WAITING 'ROUND THE BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEND!
Wow I didn't even know fossil fighters was gonna be a thing...sweet
Reminds me of Dinosaur King....
THIS GAME IS AWESOME EXCEPT FOR ONE THING i hate how you have to use your friends for your other two vivosaurs i shoukd be abke to use three of my own dinosaur choices not my choice and to of my friends dinosaurs
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I LOVE FOSSIL FIGHTERS!!!!!!! NEW FOSSIL FIGHTERS GAME GIMME!!!
Tammy Werner yea but this one sucks
#nintendobacktobrazil

Happy Birthday Reggie!
I'm suddenly reminded of monster rancher
It's like Pokémon, only with dinos. 😛
If you think that you've never played the game before.
spectrobes? anyone?
Sawyer Ringe Glad i'm not the only one who saw the similarities
Sawyer Ringe Pretty much the same concept but instead reviving monsters their dinosaurs. Even though Spectrobes was released a year before, this series seems to be doing much better considering Spectrobes hasn't released any more games since Origins for the Wii.
I played the two games on DS and they were great, lot's of fun. I bet this series is fun as well but I'm passing it since I've got plenty of other games and other's I'm looking forward to.
Should I get this? I've never played any of the previous games (or any pokemon games) and I think it might be something worth trying
You definatly should give it a try, and don't listen to anyone telling you shouldn't touch it because what you like or don't like should only be controled by your OWN opinions :3
Fossil fighter games are great is very fun driving with the dinosaurs and digging out there bones I recommend it.
Fossil Fighters is really good, and actually it isn't all that similar with Pokemon. Although, I think it would be best to get the one of the first two. This one looks quite different. I can totally assure you you can find enjoyment out of the first if turn based RPGs are your thing.
I would have done that years ago if I didn't have one of those "pokemon are demonic and evil" parents :P
Man, I love that part in the commercial when it's like "WHO PUT THEM HERE!!!" I just could not stop laughing! Anyone? No...ok
This looks amazing! Nice Job Nintendo! So COOL! I WANT IT! (I love dinosaurs)
Picked this up last sunday and is a good game, nothing majorly awesome/ I never played a dinosaur game like this b4 and it's perfect to play.
Wow, looks cool.
This actually looks a lot better than that Combat of Giants Dinosaurs game on the DS.
Nintendo please E3 2015!!! i cant' wait!
Looks like a combination of early Digimon games and Monster Rancher. I don't think I'm interested in it myself but it does look like it could be a lot of fun for some people.
Looks kinda better, i played the first game and never the second, but im kind of interested now.
I have the game, but the game is a bit harder and the whole mechanic has changed a lot!
such a good series gone to waste
Looks like a creative idea! :-)
wow lost my 3ds at the worst time
don't worry its not that good of a game the previous ones are much better
Anyone else rather have a badass spectrobes for the 3DS?
Nah
This looks so awful. I know the 3DS is limited but Nintendo could have done better.
What?!?! I think you never played a Fossil Fighters game before! Those games are awesome! :O
Jef De Bock perhaps he meant graphics wise? In which case the 3ds does look awful and this is even more apparent with open-world games.
***** there's nothing 'perfect' about aliasing from an artistic POV, it's like looking at a poorly cropped picture of a painting, did you think the artist of said painting meant to make it look like that?
Also, do you not realize the hypocrisy in your own comment?
think outside of your age group
The graphics look ugly and outdated but I think the gameplay is fun.
😃😃😃 I thought they just left it to die, thanks
Th t rex kinda looks like digimon
Guys look its spectrobes but with dinosaurs!!
WHO PUT THEM HERE!?
Please, release it in Europe already!
Under 301 plus club.... Shoot me
Half of my bottom 3ds screen doesn't work anymore cause I dropped it. (Still can use it, just can't see two thirds of it). Is this game so reliant on the bottom screen that there's no point of me getting it?

I got it for 35$
***** how much at gamestop with membership?
Would buy
I remember playing fossil fighters and it was like a birds eye view, this seems like a TOTALLY different game to me, and it still seems like the graphics are bad
Was this originally an N64 game or just really, really low budget?
Destructoid ranked it a 3 out of a 10
Should i still buy it?
Is there an option so I don't have to use a car?
This looks fun to play! :D
Bad graphics..but the concept seems Ok
Jeanette Avila I thought the graphics were great. I especially loved the Vivosaurs designs.
Half the comments I see are about this game looking bad... I really don't see it. Maybe
i just like art style over actual quality? I dunno.
Besides the backgrounds, I don't see anything that looks horrendous graphically. Some are comparing it to N64 graphics? Really? It's not that bad. Look at Mario 64 and then at this. See which one looks worse... Rant over.
What they need to do is make another spectrobes game
if soomone has this game can somone tell me what are the Online feauteres of it? like Multiplyer is it online global or just co-op? pvp?
I think its online co-op
Under 301 club, how tough are ya?

If you're on a budget you could always get the doorstop I mean 2ds
Trent Higgins It's not just a budget. I'm very busy with covering indie games.
what if you made a pokemon racing game of some sort? :3
Nintendo Wheres the North American release of Attack on Titan!!!???
2011 one 1000 times better
This is the worst Pokemon ripoff since Tetris Emblem Chronicles Triple Deluxe Crossing 3D: I am Bread Edition.
😄
Meanwhile on PS Vita...
parece twisted metal+pokémon+dino rey :,v
Nintendo we need more info on Mewtwo for smash and other smash DLC characters!
+Christopher Ruddy and what does this have to do with fossil fighters
This game is just a copy of Pokémon but it's dinosaurs and it's badly animated.
Another game by Nintendo going straight to the bargain bin again.
This is just a dinosaur king ripoff.

This game is awful because it has less vivosaurs than its predecessor Fossil Fighters Champion and that was on a DS. Also the driving mechanic is atrocious. It also does not have super revivals which make some of your vivosaurs look intimidating
So spectrobes with multiplayer.........
yea i enjoyed the turn based battles and driving around in a buggy in spectrobes
Spectrobes was better...
Welcome to disappointment!
the music good but this game looks terrible
Keep in mind the game is supposed to be played on a handheld, it's not supposed to be blown up like this so it's visually a misrepresentation of the game
And it was made in 2012
