In an interview with Levi, he said that Prince told the band he didn't care if they had a good time on stage or not. He said the job is to make sure the audience has a good time. Prince told them that there were times when he didn't want to be on stage, but he always made sure it looked like he was having a great time, so the people would have a great time. So that's part of how he expected them all to be actors, and act like they're having fun no matter how they really felt. John Blackwell performed at the 2004 Essence Music Festival just days after his daughter accidentally drowned. He had to act like he wasn't going through anything. That's what Prince expected of him.
Thanks MsPea. That is a great story. John Blackwell was a great friend. Really miss him. We went to Berklee College of Music to watch the scholarship concert in his daughter Jia's name.
This inspired me to share a few loosely related purple tidbits; I moved to a new neighborhood this past year and my mysterious next-door is a saxophone player, he plays absolutely beautifully. It sounds like it may be an alto sax, so while I work, I'd try to guess the melodies, songs, and solos he'd mix in with his practice playing. One day I heard a very familiar sax solo, no accompanying instruments and realized it was Eddie M's sax solo from the extended live version of I Would Die 4 U! Which I just LOVE so I was like wow, this pro appreciates Eddie M's sax solo as well! Thank you to all! I look forward to every show!😎
Ahaha you do like Roger. I heard Prince and Roger got along very well during a tour in 1982 and Roger had a lot of respect for Prince music (check the final line in IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER).
Haha. If they want to hear it like the record, they can stay home. That's how I feel for most set lists. To do a whole concert like the Record, is just a drag. Paint ny numbers kind of thing.

Damn the story. That's freakin Eddie M. That guy had the best sax solos ever!
Thanks for the comment. Eddie M plays a part in a lot of Prince and Sheila E great moments.

Thanks for the comment. That was a great story Modernaire. Always cool when a neighbor's bleeds thru the walls and it is something we dig.
Who else remembers Sheila E singing
EDDIE M

I think it's all about the live experience. That's what makes music so unique! I'm with you Spotted liver
You know not musicians no more you are actors
Thanks Kingsport. That Prince story stood out for me too as did the "bring your tape recorder to rehearsal".
