Just turned 69. I throw 300-325 consistently with occasional longer shots. Been playing 5 years and what I’ve learned is to not only pay attention to the flight numbers but the corresponding weight. Can’t throw anything with a turn more than 1 or fade more than 3. The Wraith is my longest straightest disc 141gms. I throw a Bolt long too at 152gms. I use a Stratas at 154gms for rhbh right hand fades. Everything in my bag is less than 170gms except my putter. Love the game can’t get enough. Just stumbled onto your channel and look forward to watching more. Thank you 🙏
Wow! You're killing it at 69 years old! I wish I could throw a Wraith that far! Great job!! One thing is that it's often difficult to find lightweight discs. They seem to sell out very quickly.
I like Doug play MA 60, I’m also currently sponsored by LoneStar disc golf. I just recently won first place in a two round tournament ended with a -16 1st round -9 no bogeys, 2nd round -7 1 bogey. I’m 61 and I need to start using lighter disc I can throw 330-340 probably could get a little more distance with lighter discs. I love playing even in spite of having mild arthritis. Thanks for sharing this, it is very encouraging to hear that our age group can play and have fun and even win tournaments. I have like 7 wins. Keep up the good work. Doug keep throwing Doug and Nick. I’m rated 884 trying to reach 900 at least.
What I've seen of older players is similar to younger ones, less efficient throwing technique limiting distance. A smooth rotation of your core, like niklas antilla, is pretty doable if your spine can still rotate, and good timing. Accommodating various injuries clearly makes it harder but old people do all kinds of stuff like marathons and rock climbing etc. Disc golf is very achievable to play competitively even beating much younger players
Great video...keep-em coming. I'm a 60+ player from San Diego. +1 for Mambas. I also like a mid-weight Jade as my more dependable "driver" , a Cicada as "straight" 7 speed and keep going back to my older Leopard for "S turn" / understable distance.
Thanks, San Diego! The Jade is a great disc and that Leopard is a classic! I'd like to try out a Cicada sometime. Hadn't heard of that one. How are the DG courses around San Diego?
The Mamba is such a great disc!! I would suggest getting one or two more in lighter weights. It's always good to have an extra or two! I know people that love them in the super light weight 138g range. The Mamba I like best is 148g.
Another awesome video Nick, nice to virtually meet your friend Doug. I like that your video talked about the weights of the discs, a lot of videos don't bother to mention that and it can make a substantial difference. I consider myself on the cusp of becoming a young old dude a disc golfer at 59 and a half. I can throw about 300 ft. Sometimes it seems like I can throw farther than that but when I go out to a local football field edge of end zone to edge of end zone is about my max. I probably throw this that are too fast and too heavy for my arm speed. I don't have much in the way of max weight disk but try to shoot for this that are in the mid-160s. I have a Daedalus in the star plastic that is probably my longest throwing disc but it's a little finicky. I have an MVP Wave in the fission plastic that seems to be easier to get up to speed and achieves similar distances were reliably. I bought it last May at the Portland open tournament to support the jomez fpo hot geese ladies after an old dude that I was spotting with let me throw his while we were waiting for the first ladies card to reach the hole that we were spotting on. If memory serves the whole is 320 ft and downhill. First throw of the wave parked it, love at first flight. Rarely throw a bad shot with it. Take care a stay awesome.
Hey Nick! Great to see Doug's bag and style of playing. Once you get out there and playing on a regular basis you discover what discs and weights work best for you. I love his final goal/thought. Consistency is the key to scoring well for everyone. I have moved up to MA 70in a few tournaments, but not as many competitors. Most tournaments need a few tweaks to keep the seniors coming back. 2 rounds in one day is ok, but 4 rounds in 2 days from long tees is a lot tougher at my age. Casual play with friends is the most enjoyable for me.
Yes, 4 rounds is way too much for my arm. That's another reason I'm not keen to start playing tournaments. I wish they'd ease for the number of rounds required for seniors in tournaments.
Im 55. Just started in january. Im throwing 350 and my backhand is only getting better. Im starting to use stable to overstable such as destroyers and boss. I figure ive been doing manual labor my entire life. I have the athletic base, im puttin in the fieldwork and will be throwing 400 soon
Thanks for the video. Mamba is my go to driver. I played my first PDGA tournament in Mexico this year at age 70. I highly recommend it. It was so much fun!
Yeah, I took my Mamba out of my bag for a couple years and put it back this year. I got my first (and only) aces with it in July!! It's 148g Star Mamba.
Thanks for the videos. Talk about injuries for old dudes, I (73 next week) have fought through several injuries, but I might have one now that will end it for me. I ruptured a Peroneal Tendon in my foot. Oh my goodness, the pain. I had surgery and Oh my goodness the pain. I'm trying to recover, but I'm not sure I'll make it through this one. I sure hope I can. I love disc golf. Take care!!!
As a new MA70 player, I keep searching for lightweight Mambas. I find a 150g GStar Mamba to be the best for me. I carry Gstar and Star Mambas in weights from 137 to 170g. Great video, Thanks.
If you're ever in southern California, Discovering the World in Buena Park always has a great selection. But my first lightweight Mamba came from the Innova factory store in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
I am 65 years old and have been playing for 3 years. I throw 275 off the tee and occasionally can push that out further. I throw backhand only, forehand hurts my shoulder and I would prefer not to cause any damage. I see too many pros hurting themselves throwing forehand. At some point, I should take a few lessons. I'm sure with a little coaching I can get out to 300-325. My favorite drivers are the MVP Wave in Fission plastic and the Axiom Insanity in Fission plastic. I also bag an Axiom Crave for my fairway driver. My putter/approach disc is the awesome MVP Watt. For mids I like the Innova Mako 3 and also a Thought Space Athletics Pathfinder 5/5/0/1
I'm 52 even playing since the mid 1989. I recently started thowing disc's with more turn. Try a Innova mystere. When I'm warmed up I can still throw a destroyer 😊😅 sometimes
Jumped in to recommend the Mystere also… 50 yo just started playing 4 months ago and was getting good distance on a 155 ish mystere…. But the home course has a river on one side and a huge drainage ditch on the other…. Bye bye Mystere’s ( 2x) 😢
I’m almost 70, took up disc golf during Covid also, and throw usable 370’ BH and 330’ FH. Over 400’ and 380’ in pure distance throws. I do like lighter discs but don’t get appreciably longer usable distance than with 175 g discs. I also love Terns. Poor form prevents more arm speed (58 mph with 175 g discs). Need a coach! 😁
Getting more distance with heavier discs probably means you have strength and so you put about the same velocity on a light-weight or max-weight disc. The heavy disc will hold its velocity longer than a light disc.
Yeah, you're so right about the form. The distance you're getting is awesome! It's farther than a lot of MP60-65 players throw and they're pretty good.
I was so excited. I thought finally I'd see somebody throwing like me, old and with distance. But he's only throwing 320. Wait, that wasn't supposed to sound mean. I understand that us old guys that slam a driver down range might be hard to find. But, we exist!
Most of the old dudes I see that can throw really far have been playing a long time. I have an MP60 friend that throws about 325 but he has some awesome approach shots that really make him competitive.

A Proxy for loong put and upshots and a Bounty to go the same path but a little further. THROW FLAT. Let disc selection do the rest.

My dead flat Cosmic Neutron (I think.. its a lab 2nd) is so neutrally balanced I can get 280ft rollers with it that hit the ground within 50ft of the tee.
