- A Black Air Force airman is shot and killed by Florida sheriff's deputies.
23-year-old Senior Airman Roger Fortson was fatally shot on May 3 after the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office burst into his home.
Reports say the deputy was responding to a call about a disturbance in progress and "reacted in self-defense" after seeing Fortson with a gun.
According to the family attorney, Ben Crump, the officers were at the wrong address and did not identify himself when knocking on the door.
Fortson, reportedly on the phone, retrieved his gun when he did not see anyone outside, but the knocking continued.
Crump and Roger's family viewed the bodycam today. Ben recorded a portion of it.
Ben Crump spoke with Roland Martin about this horrific incident.

If you live near this complex go ask around you will get FACTS. The cops didn't bust in. and they were called cause all the yelling. Maybe the airman thought the person he had argued with was coming to visit him.. She insinuated to the cops there had been prior domestic disturbances had at the complex and then goes on to say she wasn't sure which unit it was. Finally, she tells the cop with sudden clarity that the disturbance came from 1401.....which one is it? They need to investigate this woman, and they need to find out if there had been any issues between the leasing office and Fortsin since he'd been there, bc for all we know she sent them there to carry out her grievances, otherwise nothing about what she said and did makes sense smfh

Nothing about this airman was aggressive, the cop hid himself, so he had no idea who is banging on his door, hit every right to have a gun in his home. Gun was clearly pointed towards the ground. Look at the nature of the call, add in the fact that most officers killed in the line of duty are killed responding to domestic calls. It’s unfortunate, I feel bad for the young man and his family, but the officer’s actions weren’t unreasonable.

I lived in Los Angeles once, cops came banging on the door out of view, I definitely had my gun pointed down by my side, I had the door half way open.. No American deserves the death penalty simply because a cop sees a gun.. unless that gun is pointed at them, then you're definitely asking to get shot.. The airman obviously couldn't see the officer when he looked out of the peep hole and took precautions before he opened the door, just in case it wasn't a cop banging on his door. The airman had his gun for protection against a possible criminal. I DID THE EXACT SAME THING IN LOS ANGELES when I couldn't see the police outside my door, only my door was half way open, because my girl was also with me at the time, and I was responsible for her protection and mine... @@kevinb.1454 The airman should have known that he had no legal obligation to answer the door at all. If he had any doubts as to the true identity of the person outside, he shouldn't have opened the door. So the fact that he did, means he wasn't afraid. So much for that excuse.
If an officer has reason to believe his life is in imminent danger, they can use lethal force, and someone standing right in front of him with a gun in their hand, it absolutely could be an imminent danger, as it takes less than a second to get the weapon pointed at the officer and fire it from that position. This officer had no idea who this guy was. Didn't know him from a can of paint or what he was capable of, so stop acting as if he did.
I'm sure the weapon was for personal protection, but a gun is useless without the common sense necessary to make proper use of it. This airman didn't have the required common sense.

I’m a former law enforcement. During any Domestic dispute. At first we are trained to do is make an assessment the moment we arrive. Whether it was the wrong home or not. You must use your senses to determine if there’s and immediate threat or not. If anything that PO should have heard a disturbance which he didn’t. Another on the door shouting “this is the (whatever police dept) should have taken the emergency level down considerably. That PO acted like there was an actual fight going on.

It’s a tragic incident, but yourself in officers shoes. Responding to possible DV call, knocks on door and the person inside acknowledges the police are there (listen to body cam), officers knocks twice and announces “Sheriffs Dept”. Person opens door with gun in hand.

The self defense is because that woman was the one who described a violent man living in that apartment….and she gave the officer that apartment number 1401 and he went to 1401. So he’s already expecting a violent man in that apartment….then the young man opens the door and has a gun….so of course the officer is going to think the worst. That woman gave him the wrong number….did she do it on purpose? Was there even a violent man somewhere who was abusing a woman? None of this would have happened if it wasn’t for that woman telling him it was apartment 1401.
@@starshine3588 The deputy had an obligation to verify the information and not assume that all information received is valid. The person who provided the information didn't unholster his weapon, raise it, and shoot the airmen. What probable cause did he have other than statement provided? In my opinion this deputy was either improperly capable of assessing and handling the situation or he just didn't care and thought a weapon in hand automatically equals free to fire. It's upsetting to think that a person can't be at peace at home and loses his life because of someone didn't properly assess the situation and take additional measures to ensure he got it right with no loss of life.

@@williamderrickburch the officer perspective would be respond to a call for domestic violence by your self. Approach the location identified by the apt complexes personnel. You knock on the door announcing you the sheriff dept twice. Person open door with gun in hand not holstered. In the close proximity giving verbal commands would not have been feasible. Based on what the super knew at the time the shoot would be ruled justified. It’s tragic. It’s not a good idea to approach the door with a weapon in hand with the police on the other side. He did clearly announce his office twice. Gun in hand very quickly is gun in use.

No they won’t…they already released the body cam footage that proves what happened. That woman gave the officer the wrong apartment number and he went to the apartment she said. He also announced that he was police. He’s expecting a violent man since that woman reported a violent man was there fighting and abusing his woman….then the young man opens the door and the officer sees the gun and of course thinks this is the violent man the woman reported and thinks he could try to kill him…so he shoots first. If it wasn’t for that woman giving the wrong address none of this would have happened. And she needs to be investigated to see if she gave the wrong number on purpose and if there was even an abusive man in that building to begin with or if she made it all up.

I'm retired military....we have rules of engagement and this is in a 3rd world country. Why is it, here in THE UNITED STATES of FREAKIN AMERICA, they don't have in place or exercise any type of rules of engagement. Again, another example of the trained and the untrained. I've witness 19 years in 3rd world countries conduct themselves better than these so-called professionals. Pathetic!!!
I agree with you Brotha, as a veteran, there are rules of engagement and they have to be followed to the T. Clearly, this is what happens when untrained personnel gets access to weapons and do not exercise caution, use common sense, when engaging the public with a firearm loaded and ready 2 go. All he had to do was use verbal commands once that door opened and tell the Airman to put the gun down and step back which I'm pretty sure the Airman would have done. It shows in his demeanor he was complying. The only thing I wished the Airman would have done before he opened that door, was to put that gun away and not come to the door with gun in hand. As you and I know, they (PD) are gonna try and use that as an excuse to justify the shooting of this young Airman. Well, we will have to wait and see what happens next.

Okaloosa Acorn Police Department. This whole department got scary cops!! A few weeks ago, an officer there, arrested, searched and cuffed a Black male. Put him in his cruiser. While cop is standing 11:44 a few feet away, a “acorn” dropped on the cruiser, and that stupid cop, shot up his own cruiser, along with other cops, with the Black man inside. The cop claimed he was hit and crawled around the ground like a rat. You can’t make this stuff up. Now, the same department, has literally murdered this upstanding Air Force patriot.

The cop knocks and then moves to the side away from the door, waits, knocks again and is yelling announcing himself while moving around which makes no sense. There's no sounds at all coming from the apartment. The door opens and he unloads on that young man point blank in a split second. And then calls it in saying "suspect down". That's all I need to know-that cop said suspect because that's what he saw when he a black man and that's why he gunned him down. He was a "suspect" in his own home just answering the door.
1. The deputy has to keep himself safe as well. He’s responding to an unknown situation. He has no idea what is happening behind that door. Standing in a doorway is extremely unsafe.
2. Be careful with this click bait. The deputy clearly didn’t burst into the door.
3. Action vs reaction. Action beats reaction the vast majority of the time. If the plan is to wait until you aim the gun at me to defend myself, I will lose every time.
4. Right vs wrong apartment. Completely irrelevant. The deputy responded to an incident. If the person answers the door and says wrong apartment, the deputy moves on. Right apartment or apartment next door, the deputy is going to respond in the same manner.
5. Please don’t use this family’s loss to push your own agenda. This is NOT about gun rights. This is NOT about race. This is NOT corruption. This family lost one of their own. It’s extremely unfortunate and tragic. Remember them in your prayers.
6. This does NOT make the deputy wrong or biased in any way. The deputy is a citizen just like you and me. He has the same rights. Be careful not to tarnish his name. He is ALSO decorated.
