Seems rather cool guy . I think he was actually pretty good leader and a person , yes he made some mistakes but nodbody is perfect and he was also able to fix most of things he broken (economy). In fact he reminds me a little of Józef Piłsudski one of the founding fathers of interwar Poland and a military leader. Very interesting epizode btw.

That is a great comparison I never thought about! Rawlings made huge loads of mistakes, but I think in the end he was a great leader for Ghana, because he was honest and wanted to learn and become one. I am myself a human rights defender, but not a radical one and it really is difficult to judge first steps someone with a military background and without much education in a superpoor country plunged by the wars of criminal gangs and with over 100 % inflation rate - do not want to see others performance in such a circumstances. Nowdays in Ghana about 96 % of the children complete elementary school and the poverty, corruption and violent crime levels are among the lowest in Africa.

Mr Rawlings made a lot of mistakes, however he loved his people he loved Ghana and his level of honesty and self disciplined is very hard to find in leadership not whole in the African continent but in the world.
Jerry John meant well and was idealistic but he didn't know how to achieve the utopian dream he wanted to create in Ghana. He began well but he lost his way and ended up sleeping with one of his bitterest enemies, which some people say led to his death. If the truth be told, he was no Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus but just another frustrated and angry young Ghanaian who thought he could transform this land of incorrigible tribal bigots, hypocrites, and unscrupulous people into a paradise for Ghanaians, or something better than it was then and is today.
I can't recall any leader who would admit to himself that he was wrong and do an 180 degrees turn on his policies. If only leaders would be that openminded and understand that they are wrong when they are wrong.
How many African strongmen changed course in the way Jerry Rawlings did? I personally don't know of any, so I believe he stands out as one of modern Africa's greatest leaders.

The PNDC was never a political party. Like the name will suggest it was a provisional rule government. Provisional for 10 years. No judge was executed during the AFRC.
He always had the best intentions, he thought communism would make his peoples lives better, but when he gave communism a fair chance and it failed, he didn't cling to it and decided it was more important than the lives of his countrymen. He realised democracy could work with a bit of preparation and finally got Ghana out of a downwards spiral
There’s a lot to condemn him for but a bit like Joshua Blahyi, he probably doesn’t need to be as he seems to have recognised his own mistakes and learned from them.
I binge watch so many of your videos that I don't slow to comment sometimes. This was a man for the times and Ghana owes him so much! Thanks

Legacy marred by unnecessary bloodshed.
Rawlings was a scoundrel
This is as usual a well elaborated biography. Thank you

SO TRUE!!!
Love him or hate him he did a lot of for ghana he drastically changed things for the better ❤️❤️🕊️🕊️
I think Jerry Rawlings was the best leader Ghana ever had. No one has replaced him with all the good deeds that he did for his people.
I can't recall any leader who would admit to himself that he was wrong and do an 180 degrees turn on his policies. If only leaders would be that openminded and understand that they are wrong when they are wrong.

of all The Greats this world has ever seen, Cyrus Alexander Peter Catherine, Rawlings the Great is the most remembered.
The beautyful ones are not yet born....
What a man what a leader. We are lacking these quality leaders now adays.
Long live JJ- He will never be forgotten
AMEN
Jerry Rawlings was one of the greatest leaders in the history of Ghana. The greatest leader that ever came out of Ghana was Kwame Nkurumah.
AFTER KWAME NKRUMAH, HE WAS !!!
I was stunned in the way how he entertained the Namibian Nation with his Flying skills. He showcased his Brilliance that he controlled that big Bird like a Helicopter and pulled it up masterly and waved us farewell .
He Was so hellbent on stopping corruption but ended up being just as corrupt as those that came before him 🙄
Lies
This gives me hope that Zimbabwe too will survive ZanuPF and maybe the guilty will meet their judgement too.
It's weird to see a man seize power as basically a dictator and then transition to being a democratically elected as president.
This is happening in Uganda now and worse than Ghana
Thanks African Biographics. I think this title and narrative were right on point. Kudos!!.
Not exactly correct. A lot of misrepresentations in this narrative.
He died peacefully and a hero even step down and supported someone else who was not his candidate he is the best president of african behind nelson mandela and thomas sankara

A legendary man. Too bad he wasted part of his life on Marxism; but who can blame him? We are grateful for his noble contribution to Africa.
as if no liberal capitalists was.any better. In fact it was the main reason why he did a coup in tyr first place.
He always had the best intentions, he thought communism would make his peoples lives better, but when he gave communism a fair chance and it failed, he didn't cling to it and decided it was more important than the lives of his countrymen. He’s Cantonese, he’s not African.
Maybe that's why he was a good leader
@@AmanuelAlehegneWubete he wasn’t a leader, he lied and people he affiliated with lied as well.
