The balance of the sounds from the different instruments, traditional and modern, is incredible. We hear them all well. And the instrument with many strings is a koto.

It is fusion actually. Anytime you mix genres or traditional and new that word is applicable.
Bands that are combining modern music with traditional instruments has grown really popular in the last 15-20 years but you can find bands from the 80’s and 90’s that we’re doing it. Hednigarna, a Scandinavian band, The Afro-Celt Sound System, Steeleye Span (a very unique combination from England), Dead Can Dance from Australia and many more. All these groups combined instruments, style, sound in different ways.
BTW I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the English subs there are some massive mistakes there.
Where you stopped the instrument he is playing is the Koto, a relative to the Chinese Guzheng or Korean Gayageum. The flute is a Shakuhachi. Beni is playing the Shamizen.

Since Dr.Acula did not chime in yet, I'll grab the opportunity to answer some of your questions:
The many-stringed instrument at 4:04 is a Koto. So to say the japanese/asian counterpart to the european Zither, but with the important difference that the Koto is tuned by moving the pillar of each string. This gives the skilled player the opportunity to change the tune on the fly. Also this setup allows for (temporarily) de-tuning strings while playing by pressing them, as briefly seen at 5:38. If you want to se a really cool (but short) solo of the Koto, check out "Gobusei" from them.
The vocals of this particular song are not the work of the band, as it is a cover of a vocaloid song originally written for Hatsune Miku. So the music is in large parts not Wagakkis either, albeit the great arrangement to their instruments is. The original song was quite poppular in Japan, afaik, and as the did a phenomenal cover, it was the song that kick-startet them. Being that important (and good..), they played it quite often (regularly) in concerts, often as the final song (as in this show).
On another note: This is quite the international entanglement: A german guy answering the questions about a japanese band an italiangirl (born in the Ukraine) asked in english. :o)

Koto is quite difficult to play, since you have to tune it for the next song at the same time you play.

Not a banjo, it's a traditional Japanese instrument called shamisen. Ninagawa Beni is considered an expert with the shamisen, but I think that should be obvious when you hear her play 🙂Thanks for checking out this band!
