*HOLY CRAP, do I believe the Oscar hype!!!! Minus One was beautifully done. Shikishima struggling to deal with survivor's guilt & PTSD suddenly being thrust back into a war against the very creature that put him in that spot to begin with was a hell of a fight. All while struggling to accept the family dynamic with Noriko and Akiko? Amazing.* *SIDE NOTES:* *> I wasn't expecting Noriko to have survived getting caught in that shockwave from the Atomic Breath, but those Godzilla cells literally saved her neck.* *> The title "Minus One" aludes to the bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki setting everything at 0, but Godzilla's arrival sent it down below 0 to -1.*
@ Couldn’t agree more with you in glade you posted your reaction video to this masterpiece of a Godzilla movie ! If you take requests I would like you to do reaction videos to these two underrated Arnold movies called Raw Deal and Red Heat
Seriously glad you loved this movie, and Godzilla in general. I don't meet too many people who are genuine Godzilla fans so it's good to see someone that gets as excited as I do about Godzilla, especially this movie, it's the best!!!!
Godzilla's regenerative capabilities have always been part of his lore, but they weren't given an official name(s) until the 90s and early 2000s. In the 90s films, known as the Heisei Era, Godzilla's genetic code was given the official term "G-Cells". But it wouldn't be until Godzilla 2000 that we first saw his regenerative capabilities in action. In that film they were given the name "Regenerator G-1" (though in the Japanese dub, they are given the name "Organizer G-1", due to the fact that the enemy monster Godzilla fights in that film is named Orga).
I am pretty sure Godzilla's G cells also allow him to adapt so that the same kind of attack never works more than once. in some of the earlier movies Godzilla is stopped by electricity and chemicals but afterwards they do nothing to him. in this movie heavy artillery drives him back in the ocean but heavy tank fire does nothing but annoy him once he is in the city. blowing up a plane in his mouth will probably never work again.
Thank you for re-uploading Camis reaction , one of the better Godzilla-1.0 reactions in tube land. One thing I learned from the directors notes is about the floating fish, this is how Godzilla feeds by forcing fish to the surface quickly where they bloat and die and he can feed on them, also why he dislikes boats / ships due to the japans fishing the Sea.
@@anthonywopaness2927 thank you!! I’m glad you enjoyed! Also, love the facts you shared. This film is just amazing, glad I had the opportunity to react to it! :)
Honour means something VERY different in japan. The loss of it is almost like the loss of your life. If samurai lost their honour (eg, run from battle) in the olden days, they'd kill themselves (commit seppuku). A lot of shame is involved. The guy was a kamikaze pilot who didn't do his duty (whether the duty is good or bad). Hence his fear of revealing he was a kamikaze pilot and the very negative reaction of people who find out, or those who know and see that he is alive.
This mantra of thinking is the exact thing this movie is critiquing. That line of thinking is exactly what led to the kamikaze pilot system, the government not treating human lives with their real value, and thusly the unnecessary loss of many young lives. People aren't just their worth in honor, and the people of Japan know that too (now). That's why Tachibana and the lady next door are so happy to see him alive after the final fight. Edit: Hell, Shikishima failing his mission and him dealing with in the old ways of "I should be dead because of what I have done" is the *main plot point* of his story.
Great reaction, you mirrored how I felt the first time I saw this masterpiece. Unfortunatlely, you missed the end part where Noriko was hugging her man and she had some type of virus or mark from Godzilla, which is why she even lived through that horrible destructive scene. But in the sequel, I’m not sure if she will be normal, or maybe she’ll have some way to communicate with Godzilla. And yes, the sequel is coming in a year or two.
@@ba2724 yay! I can’t wait for the sequel! I’m glad you enjoyed and felt the same as I did! I just love to hear it. 🤍 And thank you for sharing about the mark! I’m really curious where the director will take that in the next one!
You have to remember the very limited budget this had, 10 million compared a hundred million dollars + in some of Legendary's Also, the Director actually did most of the fx himself which is even more amazing. It was so incredible that I saw it 3 times in IMAX. Sadly you didn't show the 2 times he flexed and looked bigtime scary!! It appeared you also missed the end where something was growing up her neck. Heard it was Godzilla's Cells which helped her to regenerate like he did. Don't recall myself ever tearing up in a Godzilla movie, let alone 3 times in this one. Fantastic time to be a Godzilla fan. 💚💚💚
"They should just play ot cool. Let godzilla be godzilla" ah haha too cute. Not sure if you caught on, but godzilla grew tenfold because of the radiation that permeated the Pacific Seas due to nuclear bomb testing by allied forces, france and the US in particular. Historically , given the amount of testing, I'm surprised the pacific ocean and its sealife still exist.
If they bring in another Kaiju/monster for Godzilla to battle in the sequel, I hope they use Hedorah. Hedorah done with new special effects would be terrifying.
I heard that they're making, or going to make a direct sequel to this movie, and I can only hope that the same director will be shooting it, following the same characters (with the same cast and crew) and an update with Noriko since she ended up with Godzilla's G-cells to make her regenerate from her fatal accident.
This is my favorite movie. Almost every human character has an arc. You can almost remove Godzilla and still have a great movie. But it also goes to show, even if Godzilla is not onscreen that much, if you: Have a great story, engaging characters, and still focus on Godzilla when he's not on screen but his presence is still felt, you'll win. This movie is on par with the original. It reminded modern audience where Godzilla came from, what Godzilla was supposed to represent while also adding him as a metaphor for wartime PTSD and survivor's guilt.
Godzilla has always had regeneration actually! It's usually not so obvious due to him being so durable, but movies like Godzilla vs Biollante and Godzilla 2000 really focus on that aspect, hence why Biollante and Orga, monsters with Godzilla's DNA, have regenerative powers like this
Since you love Godzilla so much, there’s the scene when Godzilla chomps down on the train and carries it in his mouth, much like a big panther or tiger. I don’t know why, but I found it adorable. Yes, I know he killed tens of thousand that day, but still, he looked as if he just wanted to play with his toy train! Glad Noriko made it out...
Why not crop just the captions so they can be the right way around? If I didn't know the story so well by watching this as many times as I did this reaction is a lot harder to enjoy for a casual fan.
SHIN GODZILLAis my other favorite Godzilla movie. It's similar to this, but focuses more on what a present-day government response would be to Godzilla showing up. It's very fast-paced and dialogue-heavy, so it might be difficult to "react" to, but it's well-worth a watch.
Godzilla is nowhere near as hateful in that first film as he is here. He's just a POS here. In the first movie, he at least garners some sympathy for being a victim of the atom bomb. Minus One Godzilla is a victim of the atom bomb in the same way that Freddy Krueger is a victim of vigilante justice: he was terrible before and even worse after.
Godzilla was mutated by the radiation. his heart became a nuclear reactor while his body turned into a super cancer. so now he is in constant pain cause his heart is literally killing him from the inside, but he can't die due to the cancer "healing" him too quickly. this is why he will never forgive humanity.
Godzilla has been able to regenerate since the 80's, specifically with "vs Biolllante." Before, he was just described as being impervious to conventional weaponry (Showa). Regeneration became a greater story point for Godzilla 2000 and the Cerasini Godzilla book series in the late 90s. Point is... It's not a new thing.

This Godzilla was a force of nature to be defeated not a hero to be cheered.
Best Visual Effects Oscar on a movie that had a budget 1/8 of Legendary's overall budget. Suck it Hollywood.
In the beginning, he was a Kamikaze pilot, and there was nothing wrong with his plane; he should not have come home.
The entire _Boat Chase Sequence_ is EPIC!
Tokyo spent the same amount for the whole movie as Hollywood would have spent for one scene. Oscar well deserved.
