Singing Options in D (and any key really)

  • Joe Kagera ask for my suggestions when singing in the key of D for a baritone (male) voice.
Here I (try to) explain that all key chords (e.g. - D in the key of D) only need three notes played together to be a real chord.
You can have just two, but that is neither a major nor minor - power chords (the head bangers call 'em!).
So to make a major chord we need the 1st, 3rd and the 5th notes of the key chord.
    So in D that would be D (1st, F#(3rd) and A (5th) .
Doesn't matter if you repeat them in a higher or lower - we got six strings and three notes - so we tend to.
You vocal can be the low D or the higher D.
Or the lower or higher F# ,
Or the lower or higher A.
And so that might help Joe, and of course this is the basis of basic harmony anyway, and I do offer singing mentorship like my online one-to-one guitar teaching via zoom.
Hope this helps, and apologies for not sending this out last Friday!

It helped me! Thanks. I’ve never known how people sing harmony, but love the groups that do it well.

    Happy Easter Andy!
Imagine my surprise coming home from singing Easter Mass with my choir and finding a video from across the pond dedicated directly to me!
    You've made my day! 😁
    1. You pronounced my name perfectly
    2. You took time and effort to produce this video
However, for the life of me I can't find a comment where I talked about singing in D. I have commented about being a baritone twice in another video.
This is a great video about finding alternative notes to fit your range. My highest chest voice note comfortably is a D, so maybe I mentioned that somewhere or maybe it was back to you as a response to another comment. Either way, Thanks for an informative video and the shout out!

In other words, sing a harmony part. The song's melody is not changeable. One can modify the melody to suit the voice I guess. Billie Holliday did this often. Her range was very limited. She was still great...
