Monastery of Santa Maria de Aguiar | Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo | Portugal

This is one of those places, which are rarely found, are off any "tourist" route, but perhaps for this reason, enchant us. Castelo Rodrigo, is to the east of Foz Côa, in the extreme northwest of the Guarda district, in the border zone with Spain. This entire region has more value than what they actually give it. In this region, all the villages have different constructions and configurations than what we know or are used to seeing. However, they remain unknown and little visited.
This is the case of this former 12th century Cistercian male monastery lost in the confines of deep Portugal. The official chronology is confusing and not very clear (in the 11th century Portugal would be the Portucalense County still dependent on the Kingdom of Leão):
11th century - at the beginning a Portuguese Benedictine monastery, annexed by the Kingdom of Leão, it became Portuguese again at the end of the century. 13, following the military invasion of D. Dinis, in 1296;
1165 - donation by Fernando II de Leão; it was a branch of the Leonese Abbey of Moreruela, daughter of Claraval, integrated in the diocese of Ciudad Rodrigo, the founding monks being from Val Paraíso and São João de Tarouca;
1170 - 1174 - becomes Cistercian, having abbots for life, elected by the community of religious, a situation that lasted until 1465;
1174 - Donation by D. Afonso Henriques, apocryphal document according to several authors;

Um roteiro sobre os monumentos da Ordem de Cister seria mais uma riquíssima vertente turística: em conjunto com o Convento de Santa Maria de Seiça (tão mal tratado no concelho da Figueira da Foz, mas, felizmente, com um projecto já aprovado de recuperação - embora em algumas partes, pelo desabamento, impossível de recuperar); Mosteiro de Alcobaça, etc.

Fico penalizada quando vejo construções tão belas com partes deterioradas que, presumo, talvez estejam além de qualquer reparo. O lugar é belíssimo! A hospedaria recebe turistas? Fiquei triste com a notícia da demolição do claustro para dar espaço às touradas... Pelo que se vê, devia ser uma construção belíssima? Será que há registros fotográficos? Obrigada por mais este presente!
