  • Few cities can boast of having such a rich and diverse history as Chaves, whose three distinct characteristics have made it unique over the centuries: the Roman influence, the thermal presence and the border location.
The thermal waters of Chaves, known for their healing powers, were a magnet for the Romans, leading Emperor Flávio Vespasiano to found Aquae Flaviae two thousand years ago.
The strategic position of the city meant that throughout its history it was the target of greed for different people, from the Romans to the French, but it always resisted with the courage and determination of the Flavian people, leaving an architectural legacy that testifies to its historical and cultural.
