    Thanks fella'. It's information like this that's going to prove invaluable when I go full vanlife.
    I know praise and bigging you up makes you feel uncomfortable, but I'ma say this anyway. You are my inspiration. I'm about to turn 52 and just come out of a ten year relationship. I'm unsettled and for years have wanted to go back travelling like I did in my late teens and twenties. I love small spaces and prefer to adapt and overcome instead of pack for armageddon whenever I travel. I've watched 100's of van conversion videos and sat through countless (alleged) perfect-life scenarios of those that live van life. The perfect-toothed, achingly toned, chisel-jawed, sunglasses-after-dark wanderers accompanied by bronze-buttocked women whose vehicle doors open onto perfect sun-drenched beach vistas or blue lagoons every morning in their oh-so-desirable custom built expensive vans, resplendent with 'beautiful' interiors.
    But that ain't real life. It's disreality-tv. So bollocks to them. Give me Project Amber. On a cold wintry morning, teeth rattling throwing a ball for Lance muttering about the mud in his van and wondering when his gearbox is gonna fall off. THAT is reality-TV. And THAT is what is helping me prepare for what's to come.
    You're providing much more of a service than you realise fella'. Seriously. I really mean that.
    Thank you. 😊

      Yeah, those #vanlife types make my skin crawl sometimes. They've given up (temporarily) the trappings of normal life with a mortgage, a fancy kitchen like something out of a catalogue and all that other bullshit in favour of a simple van, with a fancy kitchen like something out of a catalogue and the _same old bullshit!_

      @@nagualdesign yes mate, agreed. One of the very few realistic van life videos I watched recently was by a young American lass. She built out her own van that she actually really did pay for and built herself. She did it on a budget, and at eighteen years old intended to travel for a year around her home state. But it was her follow-up video that grabbed me.
      She spoke extremely honestly. Not only about the reality of van life, but why there are so many disreality videos. It comes down to making a good living directly from UA-cam by endlessly & continuously putting up channel content that only shows the wondrous aspects. Of which there are many, I get that. I do. But this girl spoke succinctly about how that content distorts reality. How no-one ever see's meltdowns, people crying. Cold and alone because something has broken or they're ill or homesick. Washday, toilet malfunctions, arguments, van breakdowns, violence, lost drones, etc. Because as, she says, no-one wants to watch that.
      For such a young girl, she nailed it on the head. I'll try and find the link as it's a well crafted exposé of the truth behind 'why' so many are continually pumping out perfection videos.

      Thanks dude, appreciate it and so glad the videos give you more than just entertainment. Makes it all worth while 👍 your perfect teeth Vanlifer rant had me n the gang in stitches 😂 it's true there's alot of fakery and glamourising within this little scene, the chase for thst perfect spot and being out in nowhere is always real but the realities come with it too,
      All the best with your upcoming build! 🤘

    Hi CJ.
    I’ve fitted the 11kg Gasit bottle. When I got the van it had two 6kg Calor propane fitted.
    I replaced one, with the 11 kg but kept the other one as backup. Running it through a T piece. I only have one bottle turned on at a time. Should it runout, I turn one off and turn the other one on. Simples.
    All my heating, cooking , fridge needs are via lpg, I get through it quicker than you. I admit to having to use the belt and braces approach. I’d replace the other bottle, if I thought it was necessary, but after two, three month trips into Europe, plus most of the rest of the time away, this setup works for me.
    As you’ve said, apart from drilling that bloody hole in the van, mines a pcv, the rest is easy.

    Looks like a great upgrade. Personally, if and when I do get going on a van to live in, it will have no gas at all. Diesel-fueled heat off the main tank, as much solar as I can fit on the roof, a second dedicated alternator, Lithium battery pack and compressor fridge and induction cooktop is the (fairly pricey) plan.

    • @tonytca9439
      @tonytca9439 4 роки тому

      I got 2 full size house solar panels on my roof for 600 watts. Diesel heater of main tank, full size undercounter fridge freezer, Two 40A PSU to charge off the engine to 390Ah AGM's. I been running a solar powered shed for the last 12 years so i know what i can run and already know during the winter with endless grey rainy days you will be lucky to grab more than 30 watts. Lithium wont help the lack of solar either. SO you basically got to pull at least 1.5kWH from your alternator every day if you don't have gas and try to cook from it. . I dunno how you will manage it. Running the engine for hours is not good either the EGR valve and cat will die.

I was going to come and say hello but didn't want to feel like i was intruding. We waited for you to post your Drone footage hoping to get a glimpse of our van. We did but only for a few seconds. Ahh welcome to the club!
    Just to answer your question LPG stands for Liquid Petroleum Gas and it's a mix of Propane and Butane. Different countries use different percentages of mixes depending on how cold it gets in that country or even what season it is. As far as I'm aware the UK uses a Propane rich mix but the change could have caused the issue with your shower! You should also be aware that you need to change the tanks after 10 years but as you stated they pay for themselves after a yearish anyway! You can also download a "certificate" in Italian to bypass that issue, Oh and you cant buy LPG in Finland!

    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 4 роки тому

      Refill-bottle does have to be testet, not mandatorily changed, as far as I know, valid for various countries where Yachties sailed who I helped upgrade their Propane system to removable bottles suited for LPG (with a TÜV-approved German system of 5 or 12 kg bottles, LPG-fillerneck ontop, LPG-technique inside, and two ways to take gas out: liquid phase (for fork-lifts p.ex.) and gas-phase). Italy is a problem, ever was, ever will be with bottle filling at stations, which derives from insuffiiently hacked bottles they had in numbers thirty years ago, causing recurrent and mahussive problems all over Italy.

    Nice video so thanks for doing them. I went for an 11kg for my van and not much more money than yours, but I do run heating on LPG. Calor is a right tuck up and I've got rid of mine. The under slung type is good for larger capacities but the price seems to go up exponentially.

    I also have a 6kg gasit bottle. Great bit of kit. You can also get a Bluetooth Ultrasonic gas level system from gasit that fits to the bottom of the bottle and will tell you exactly how much gas is left in the bottle. It links to your smartphone. It’s a little pricey at £50 but it has saved the need for my second bottle (I now have more storage space in my gas locker) I just wait till the gas is down to about 15% and then fill it back up the next time I pass a lpg station. Stay safe.

    All countries use a different LPG mixture, and depending on the season it can also change which is a pain...usually warmer countries use more butane, so when it gets to freezing temperatures, not the greatest.

    when I got my motorhome it had the refill system (LPG) fitted with 2 big bottles. The only thing I find it is getting harder & harder to find a garage to fill up as a lot are stopping the LPG pumps. I will say that it last for a long time on my motorhome as only use it for the fridge sometimes & the hobs & cooker. well worth the money.

    One of the more pressing modifications when You start to go to other places (with "other places" in terms of problems with (red) gas bottle change starting at roundabout 100 to 150 km in Germany 😅) and being an absolute annoying maxi-bummer ever since for holiday tourists even. This fillerneck and three different adapters should open Europe to You with NO more problems when it comes to gas provisioning. Well done. There's a German system, just for other people's info, with refillable bottles, TÜV-approved, which are ok to be filled at the filling station even without a fixed filler-neck. (Installed some of those on yachts, Yotties have to come on land with their bottles for a refill, of course, for no water-filling-stations do have LPG, obviously.) "Tankflasche LPG" would be the term to google in search for those.

    LPG is the term that covers a range of gases . Propane , Butane and Automix ( propane/butane ) . Most people would have come into contact with these three types with out realizing any difference .But they are slightly different as they have different density / energy / freezing temp . Propane is the high performer of the three types mentioned . Flame is mostly blue with a yellow tip and is the hottest . Propane is found in camper bottles , fork lift cylinders and house supply cylinders .Propane is the cleanest burning of the three types and still remain in a liquid state at the lowest temperature . The freeze temp is very important for cold environments as LPG will not change from a solid to a gas quick enough for reliable use , acts the same as being out of gas . Butane is found in plastic cigarette lighters , has a yellow frame less heat energy , flame residue is sooty black . Becomes solid at the highest temp . If butane is used as a fuel to run a industrial boiler all the pipe work is insulated and heated ( even in Australia ) to keep the butane liquid . Butane is the cheapest of the three gas types mentioned , hence its use in industrial installs . Automix is a gas sold and distributed at gas stations as a fuel for vehicles , the percentage mix of propane /butane does vary from area to area , market to market . It would be rare for a customer to be informed on what mix they were buying when filling up at the gas station . Moderns cars have computers to manage this (ECU's ) and they run very reliably . Of course a fill up containing more butane content will take the car a shorter distance as it contains less energy . Taxi's in Australia use LPG , the fill up stations located at major Airports where 100's of Taxi's fill daily stock 100% propane mix to get the most distance out of a fill up .
    If the heater/ cooker in the van , that are designed to burn propane run fine on automix , then happy days . If not then adjustments can be made , like insulating the bottle , pressure adjustment or cleaning maintenance of the burning element . Cheers thanks for posting

    Excellent, but I'm not sure you should have thrown your 'old' bottle away.
    I plan to have the same size refillable cylinder as you, but with a two way valve I intend to keep my 'calor' bottle for when the LPG runs out. That way, by just switching valves I can still have gas until I can refill the LPG cylinder, and then switch back to that.

    Do you know if you can still travel through the Channel Tunnel with this, or would you need to disconnect it first ? ( I have with the normal gas bottles disconnected ) Price has shot up for normal gas bottles, so I'm also looking at this system as a alternative

      I've used Eurotunnel loads of times with refillable 11kg bottle,the only restriction in Max 50ltr tank,other than that you are required to show checkin staff that the bottle is turned off.I travel Europe a lot( usually!) and getting gas easy in most countries,different adapters required for each country but readily available set of 4 adapters covers everywhere,Spain and Italy where they have pump attendants usually have adapters on site.hope this helps👍

    Heyy, there is a handy app called FillLPG which tells you all the stations in the UK that sell LPG and their pricing too.. I think it gets updated regular by us general people that use it.
    I have two massive gas tanks under my van, which where mainly used for the Gas conversion that was on the engine I had. Since I have changed the Engine that system has kinda come redundant. I still have the tanks & they are used to power my heating (when its needed) & the gas hob.. I do have an immersion heater, but I am going to switch this to electric as I don't really use hot water all that much. I Think my tanks combined are 60 litres & I last filled them up in October.. So far.. I've not had to fill up..
    With your LPG System is there a release valve to take away the excess pressure in the system? I thought you needed to have this open when filling up so it didn't over pressurise the tanks.. or am I talking crap..

    I decided from the outset I didn't want _any_ propane in my van. Messing with replacing bottles around the world gets old really fast so I've got a diesel heater, 12V fridge and (and this might yet bite me) a petrol stove with a good vent. Besides, I can make alcohol for the stove, electricity for the fridge and biodiesel for the heater and van but I couldn't make a single drop of propane, let alone bottle it.
    Get some rescue tape to go with your duck tape - great for repairing leaks. Handles 8000V, 950PSI, 260 degrees C and hydrocarbons so it can get you through all kinds of scrapes. I've only ever used this brand but it seems to do what it says on the tin.

      When I purchased a gas bottle from Calor about 2 years ago I was told that they would refund the money if I brought back the bottle AND all the paperwork I received with it (there is some rental contract or some such, and a receipt). So it seems that just bringing back a bottle on its own is not enough to get your money back.

    I was looking at this system for the caravan as they do a dual system for mine quick question though does the gas pump automatically cut out when it’s full or do you just wait for the display to hit a magic number and let the button go?

    • @alanimals
      @alanimals 4 роки тому

      The pump automatically stops when your tanks are full at about 80% to allow for different temperatures.

    Coming from the US I’d appreciate self service LPG. Maybe it’s just Oklahoma, I’ve never filled a bottle elsewhere, but driving to the Propane delivery services or finding a Uhaul guy is a pain. We have the same bottle exchanges run by dozens of companies and they don’t care whose tank you bring back for exchange but that comes at double the price of the gas.
    Haven’t filled a tank since I bought a LNG grill, 2014 Weber Genesis SS LNG, not that that helps Van lifers at all.

      Almost, but not quite.. LPG(Liquid Petroleum Gas) is a blend of Propane and Butane but works in exactly the same way
