A couple people mentioned the first "FIGHT" reaction missing, so here ya go: ua-cam.com/video/XYrQZFYPNQ0/v-deo.html I got too carried away with cutting the "boring" parts and didn't even realize. Also, thanks for the support on the video :)
I do believe the end to this fight does imply Sans is dead. Grillby’s is abandoned and Papyrus is dead. He’s likely looking into Heaven when he says that, about to move on and bleeding to death.
Dang, I'mma have to look at the reaction of you finishing the Genocide route too, honestly can't believe you'd cut _everything_ after the Sans fight lol
I wish you realised that Sans killed you on the spare route to give you another chance, he knows you can save and relaod, he's killing you and telling you to not come back to the run
Sans attacks you can learn and anticipate, spoilers on the other hand come out without warning usually, from the closest people to the most random events
The creepiest thing anyone said about Undertale is that the Genocide route is actively trying to stop you. Just killing all the monsters you come across isn't enough, you have to go actively looking for them and kill every single one in the game. Miss one, and you have to start over. It wants you stop and get bored of the grinding. There is an out at every opportunity. This is what makes Sans the perfect final boss for Genocide. This fight is actively designed to be UNFAIR. Sans isn't just trying to kill Frisk/Chara. That isn't enough. He wants you to get frustrated and put the controller down. He's trying to beat you, specifically. He wants to break YOUR Determination.
Also, he doesn't Spare you when he gives you the chance. What would that even mean? The ONLY way for this to end is for the PLAYER to delete the save and start over. Then everyone will come back to life. Sans is getting you to either leave and not come back, or reset the save. He cannot let you proceed cause he knows there's literally nothing on the other side of that. Its actually pretty genius.
Yes, the genocide route is designed on purpose to be the worst game ever. You already mentioned the boring grind, but there's more. Every engagement with the game is either to a minimum or completely absent. Hell, all puzzles are outright gone so you're just walking and grinding without engagement. Then the bosses, what is supposed to be the most rewarding fights, die in one hit and most of them don't attack back, so it's extremely easy and boring... Until it isn't. Then it throws you two unfairly strong bosses, stronger than every other in the entire game. They're unfairly difficult and frustrating. So you get the wackiest and worst difficulty curbe possible. Too easy to be fun and too hard to be fun.
And when you finally beat him, FINALLY, and are given the choice to spare... if you spare him, what did you do all this for? So many hours of play, killing npcs you had previously come to care for... Hours of wandering in a world that grows emptier as you grow more hollow. But what was it all for, if you don't kill him? And the worst part is that he knows it.
I mean, the whole thing is amazing but, I think if there's a mayority of players who didn't end the genocide route is because of this. I dropped it at the tutorial, that horrified face was enough.

I know from personal experience how demoralising that is. It also violates the trust he had in the chat, which tbh probably makes him less likely to listen next time.
Things Sans did to try and win the fight - Go first (normally player goes first) - Skip dialogue to catch you off guard after the first time you manage to completely dodge his first attack - Dodge player attacks - False mercy (maybe he did hope it's the last try from the player but it kinda also counts since he didn't actually spare us) - Loading different parts his attack (I'm unsure if he's loading a file or just teleporting the soul tbh) - Putting a bone at the select screen during the player's turn - Putting more bones in the menu screen when the player decides their next action - Whatever that last attack is with the infinitely stretched out box - Just physically slamming the soul to get it to low health - Stalling out his turn so the player can't win honestly just shows how desperate he is to save the world which is understandable Can't believe someone has managed to dodge spoilers for 9 years, this popped up on my fyp and it was fun to watch!! Also my username checks out =], hope Undertale was as great an experience for you as it was for many people on the internet =] Edit: changing some minor mistakes
I don't know what's more surprising. The fact that somehow you avoided Undertale spoilers for 9 years even though they were everywhere on the internet for years Or the fact that it's already been 9 whopping years since Undertale released... I feel old man.
The sad thing about Undertale is that everyone already knows what to expect so they can't enjoy the game to the fullest extent or be surprised by it but you managed to avoid the spoilers and experience the game how it was intended to be experienced and that made your gameplay the best modern gameplay on the platform.
The sad thing is that Undertale is a vast and complex game that has here, like so many other places, been reduced to literally nothing but the Genocide Sans fight. It would be like saying "I've avoided Star Wars spoilers" and then only show like the song and dance number in Jabba's palace.
It’s something I found truly devastating watching Markiplier's playthrough a while back, or another UA-camr's modern playthrough where he was immediately told "hey you need to be doing other things" Undertale playthroughs work best when the player doesn’t know what’s happening. Every time. But nobody lets it happen.
@@Shugunou the fact he even did a pacifist was probably because people told him it was the one to do first, the beauty of Undertale is figuring out all of this stuff yourself, the game makes it very hard to do a pacifist on your first playthough, directly walling you at parts and telling you to attack, even as early as the ruins most people wouldn't know to spam spare on Toriel, it's unintuitive on purpose, while the game tells you to attack her. You're supposed to get to the end and then are told to find a way to not kill ANYBODY, that will make those who didn't try absolutely everything do so, which can lead to the correct result. Or if you simply reset a bunch to figure it out after killing her the game calls you out for that too. The backseating everyone gets while playing this game just ruins the experience IMO.
There's not much proof that he knows he's in a game except for the hacker ending, which isn't canon. He knows because besides already having knowledge of the save, he reads your expression and estimates what happened.
@@F3lipe-u8xexactly basically he just enough smart to say "its impossible that you act like that if this was the first time you experienced it" and he understand it extremely well
@@massimilianoreali4398 Yes, he pays a lot of attention to your expressions and makes inferences. If the game were more modern, I think it would be interesting for Sans to change the patterns of his attack since he knows that Frisk already knows the pattern he intends to use.

7:19 yes, Undyne is the hardest enemy only if you don't play blind. Battle of Sans has a lot of tutorials, glitches, and "no hit" videos to get some tips or tricks. But everyone forgets about Undyne. But as an experience of the game itself, Sans is much more difficult
On my first playthrough. I beat undyne after 25 tries. And still to this day am very unlikely to first try her. Sans however. I beat within 10 tries. And can consistently first try them now. When i do a no save genocide run. Undyne is what stops me. ONCE i got through them and proceeded to actually complete the whole no save run. Heck i used a mod at one point to fight sans as my first encounter in the ruins. And though it was VERY difficult and took many tries. I beat it in a few hours. At level 1 with just 3 candy items I could NEVER do that for Undyne. Undyne is harder for me. Very simply.
@@grandnova438 I beat sans under 10 tries, and Undyne... At the 3rd one. And after that I could handle her with almost 100% chance. It's really shows the differences among gamers.
@@grandnova438 yeah my comment was quite of a generalization but i respect your opinion, (when a replayed the game was the same thing you said about undyne on the third paragraph)
Stats assembled from OST comments and let's players' comments show that the out of all people who quit the No Mercy run, the vast majority (40-45%) quit immediately before or immediately after killing papyrus. Undyne and Sans follow way behind with a 23% and 15%. That's good writing.
It's bc he's dying and papyrus is dead. I mean u can make ur own theories but right after he says that the sound effect for monsters perishing into dust goes off
god DAMN this is so good. this is what undertale feels like. after 9 years of seeing everything this game has to offer, you can kind of forget how it makes you feel. you remember the general feelings, but the minutiae, the way it felt RIGHT THERE when it was happening to you... kinda slips away from you. the shock of the first attack, sans fucking dodging, the random tricks he pulls that are different to anything else in the whole game... and everything he does compounded onto the fact that this is the funny guy that you liked so much, and still do! you remember him and he makes you feel bad, and he's kinda right! you are doing this because you CAN and that means you "have to". undertale is such an interesting deconstruction of RPGs. sorry if this is incoherent rambling i just love this game and it feels so good to see other people have such strong, similar feelings about something that honestly defined my teenage years.
9 years later and Undertale still holds up as one of the most effective and fascinating deconstructions of videogames as a whole. That game deserves to be in a museum, it is a true masterpiece of meta-narrative and it deserves to be in the artistic hall of fame next to the best movies and stories of all time. I can't wait for deltarune to be completed because I just know it's going to be even crazier.
id love to see the reaction of the first person to fight sans, you are at the end of the genoseam route and the idiot from snowdin shows up and starts beating you up
me too, I still think Sans being the judge and actually a very important character is one of the best twists in this game like, he goes from fart jokes to existential crisis 💀🤚🏻 insane
this is so fascinating to me, I really wondered what it must have felt to be the first guy to fight sans. Did they give up? Did they freak out and uninstall? Or did they persevere? And on top of that, what moved them to do a full geno run, how many other geno runners before them must have given up after seeing how creepy and unsatisfying it is??? I guess the closest you can get are those og youtubers that played undertale semi-blindly when it just came out, like jacksepticeye. That's probably the closest you can get to a blind sans fight that's recorded on youtube.
@@qwertydavid8070 Not even those are blind as they've been told about the different runs the game has, which takes away from the experience of discovering them. This communities backseating kills a large part of the experience.
I feel like the "get dunked on" line makes the "if we're really friends... You won't come back" WAAYYYYT less effective. The line is great for what sans is trying to do but I see people ignore it so often cause they're mad at getting dunked on
A way to give the line more spotlight would be to just cut the game over audio once he starts saying "if we're really friends-". It would draw the attention more effectively from the epic gamers fuming at the fact they just got dunked on
This may be a mandela effect or something, but i clearly remember EVERY game over screen being replaced with get dunked on, instead of the usual "[name], stay determined"
Watching someone not know anything really made me realise how much storage is being taken up by every line of dialogue, interaction and attack pattern in my brain by this fight yet alone the whole game.

By the way, in regards to your Undertale Yellow playthrough, I gotta recommend both genocide and neutral. In the original Undertale, neutral is more or less the same as pacifist, while Undertale Yellow's has some huge differences. Doing neutral is as simple as killing some monsters and sparing some monsters.
well in undertale, neutral is the expected way to play the game, where flowey then kinda pushes you in the right direction onto pacifist. undertale yellow is for undertale fans, 98% already knowing abt all 3 endings.
Neutral Route’s extra dialogue depending on your choices shouldn’t be overlooked, but I understand that not everyone thinks a bunch of text boxes are worth replaying basically the same route over and over
I just want to put aside the whole "wooow you went 9 years without-?!" For a second and say I'm really impressed. And at 19:00, when you're singing and talking about seeing toriel's face? Exactly. That exactly it. The geno run is MEANT to be boring. It's MEANT to make you feel defeated. You're not supposed to feel good, and you literally feel the weight of every single soul you take. Toby did a brilliant thing... so it's nice to see you being able to understand just how sad it is, without being bogged down by almost a decade of hype. ❤
sad part is, after doing a genocide run, you’re rewarded with nothing, literally nothing, because you destroyed everything, yea sure you can sell your soul (in game) and do a true reset but you can’t get a true pacifist ending anymore cause you ruined it with your genocide, that’s the games way of showing consequences

Sans is aware there is a player and is specifically trying to get you to rage quit. That's why he breaks all the rules like attacking first and in your menu and doesn't provide invincibility frames after being hit.

@@cutiehifive he doesn't remember what happened, he just knows the timeline reset
Things Sans did to try and win the fight
- Go first (normally player goes first)
- Skip dialogue to catch you off guard after the first time you manage to completely dodge his first attack
- Dodge player attacks
- False mercy (maybe he did hope it's the last try from the player but it kinda also counts since he didn't actually spare us)
- Loading different parts his attack (I'm unsure if he's loading a file or just teleporting the soul tbh)
- Putting a bone at the select screen during the player's turn
- Putting more bones in the menu screen when the player decides their next action
- Whatever that last attack is with the infinitely stretched out box
- Just physically slamming the soul to get it to low health
- Stalling out his turn so the player can't win
honestly just shows how desperate he is to save the world which is understandable
Can't believe someone has managed to dodge spoilers for 9 years, this popped up on my fyp and it was fun to watch!!

The fact that somehow you avoided Undertale spoilers for 9 years even though they were everywhere on the internet for years

"I avoided Undertale spoilers for 9 years."
*our reports showed a massive anomaly in the time-space continuum.*
@@Yonkage-ik5qb He did a pacifist run first and uploaded it.
Facts
It’s something I found truly devastating watching Markiplier's playthrough a while back, or another UA-camr's modern playthrough where he was immediately told "hey you need to be doing other things"
Undertale playthroughs work best when the player doesn’t know what’s happening.

Very simply.

god DAMN this is so good. this is what undertale feels like. after 9 years of seeing everything this game has to offer, you can kind of forget how it makes you feel. you remember the general feelings, but the minutiae, the way it felt RIGHT THERE when it was happening to you... kinda slips away from you. the shock of the first attack, sans fucking dodging, the random tricks he pulls that are different to anything else in the whole game... and everything he does compounded onto the fact that this is the funny guy that you liked so much, and still do! you remember him and he makes you feel bad, and he's kinda right! you are doing this because you CAN and that means you "have to". undertale is such an interesting deconstruction of RPGs. sorry if this is incoherent rambling i just love this game and it feels so good to see other people have such strong, similar feelings about something that honestly defined my teenage years.
Yes Yes and Yes
9 years later and Undertale still holds up as one of the most effective and fascinating deconstructions of videogames as a whole. That game deserves to be in a museum, it is a true masterpiece of meta-narrative and it deserves to be in the artistic hall of fame next to the best movies and stories of all time. I can't wait for deltarune to be completed because I just know it's going to be even crazier.
Undertale is to RPGs what Spec Ops: The Line is to military shooters
