He's self employed, so he has to cover maintenance, expenses, insurance, AND value his labour so that he has money to take home after paying his business bills in order to pay his home/life bills. As with everyone else - employed or self-employed - the bare minimum for that isn't what you expect to receive... so add on a little extra for luxuries. That's profit.
The fact that he doesn't charge for one job a week, thereby being a blessing to other people, says a lot about his character. The fact that he can make money from that good deed without it costing the receiver a single cent says even more. Very clever of him - and this channel would have taken some time to build up to the point of even generating income... and it's not for no effort either. Not only is the effort including the uncharged labour and time to DO the job, he then has to edit and prep the vid. He had to work on getting his channel noticed, etc. Being a youtuber isn't easy, and certainly not being a landscaper.
A workman is worthy of his wages. And a good deed is rewarded. At least he gets to sleep well at night, knowing he can be proud of the work he's put in.
If his regular work is with this much effort, then his business is going to just get better and better.

This yard is one of the largest I have ever seen that wasn’t part of a farm or something. The area outside the fence is enormous all by itself! This poor couple would never get to enjoy it given their work schedules and then caring for a toddler as well, without some kind of help. My husband and I had a huge yard when our two girls were small. All we did was work, work, work. We never got to just play in it, especially in the summer. What a tremendous blessing you were, Spencer! I hope they all go outside and enjoy a picnic and maybe play cornhole or set up badminton or something. So many possibilities, but that yard would take a village!

It’s almost like sometimes people end up living wherever they can, and sometimes it’s not ideal.
Things change and we don’t all have godlike prescience and unlimited time and resources to adjust to hardships and challenges.
I’ve been in a lot of rentals, for instance, where there was a lot of land. We were farmers. People will rent to you and SAY they’ll do the mowing but then it doesn’t get done. A big area like this requires extremely expensive equipment, plus a TON of time, especially if it’s gotten mature.
If your lease says painting and pressure washing and siding repair are going to be done by the owners, you have no way to enforce that - same as other maintenance. Those agreements are just so the owners can specify what YOU have to do and then kick you out if it doesn’t get done.
People get trapped in bad situations. And the assholery of judgey people just makes it worse.

@21:00 Spencer, it is a joy to see you adopt the Al Bladez patented tree limb prune technique, where you take the saw , stick it vertically straight up as high as you can reach, and walk under the tree cutting all that the saw can reach, likely about 6 1/2 feet.
Seriously, it creates security visibility on the property, and you won’t hit your head thr next time you mow-I hate it when that happens.
    Outstanding job!

Wow. Nice job. Thanks to the people for giving you treats while working. That place was ready for renewal. Taking out the seedling trees was good. Excellent Archeology work in refinding the lost extensive walkway. Your removing things from the fence line is important and taking out tree suckers makes a place look neater. Raising tree branches makes for a better view as well as reduces risks of injury from dodging while mowing. There are probably multiple people approving using a tarp to haul, reducing walking back and forth, and congratulations on using your mower to tow with. You have been hustling, getting a lot done in a short time...and the sun is now dropping. I was just getting amazed at realizing your fence clearing technique is really coming along and at the same time you are still moving the camera to video!! Good changes.

Take this from an old guy who has mown many a yard…when you mow a yard that overgrown, mow in a big square from the outside in going always in the same direction. You will “mulch” the tall grass as you go and you won’t have to go over it and over it. Granted, it takes the fun out of the zero-turn, but it will save you so much time. Love the work you do…keep it up! ❤❤❤
