Great tune and crisp playing by all. Secondly, I certainly never heard it on an elevator!
One of the best Jazz album from 80's .
Literally album of the year
Stellar music!
Every time I hear Wynton Marsalis on the Bobby Watson track In Case you Missed it I get goose bumps. What a baddass bunch of badass musicians.

Terrific. I've been enjoying Bobby Watson's current output.
Thanks for this!! Much appreciated
Thanks a million! Wonderful!
Wow... Great 2015 edition of this album... All of which is stellar work!
sublime
With exactly the same rhythm section but with Bill Pearce-tenor, Bobby Watson-alto & music director, and Wynton Marsalis trumpet (from track 3 onwards). I saw this fantastic sextet a few weeks before in Holland, on a bitterly bloody cold evening. I never knew that this record existed, or let alone even "album of the year"! But in '81/'82 the Jazz Messengers recorded live in the -Keystone Korner Jazz-Joint- in San Francisco an LP on the Concord-label that became a Downbeat winner. And please correct me if i am wrong. Around these times they made also an live recording (2 LP's) at Bubba's in Florida but released under Wynton's name. This truly marvellous group of incredible Jazz musicians set the place on fire with an drive, vigour, inventiveness, and never-ending improvisations. And as Art Blakey said to me at that gig in Holland, all those years ago, we play - gut bucket shit! - and how right he was and what i find somehow missing these days.... Thank you for this (mind-blowing and surprising) upload, that certainly has my memories on full overdrive.
Saw this band at Keystone Korner as well as an earlier addition with Wynton and Brandford Marsalis. Your discography is correct as I have those LPs. Also saw this band on New Year's Eve at Keystone with Blakey alumni that included Cedar Walton, Curtis Fuller, Airto and Johnny Griffin. The combined band played a Blues March that is best version I have ever experienced. I have looked in vain since for a recording of that night.
Attn: Charles. Good to read about your (just today) assessment! I find it very disturbing that (some) records are re-issued under the wrong pretence or dates! These (live) Keystone and Bubba sessions are electrifying. And i find it also (very) disturbing Charles that currently in the USA, Jazz the only America art form of any notability, the scene is certainly not what it used to be and in fact diminishing. If you agree, or to the contrary, you might be able to fill me in? Cheers!
Guillaume Heurtebize Sorry Guillaume but what do you exactly mean with “filled-in”? Cheers!
Great shout.
JazzSize One of the Jazz Messengers best line-ups. Dig & Cheers!
Great! thanks
